View Full Version : What Space marine chapter do you play?

kire

Before the new codex comes out id like to take a snapshot of what chapter(s) everyone plays. id make this a poll but there are just way to many chapters for that. so instead id like everybody who want to participate to list there chapters in a nice consistent format so that a week from now i can go count up everyone's posts and list the results in the post below.

the rules for posts
1. only loyalist chapters. if someone wants to start this same thing for chaos id love to see it but i want to keep this thread manageable

2. if you place comments in your post put two blank lines between in and your chapter so its easy to count.

3. for non fist founding chapters please place the name of your founding chapter after its name, or unknown (save me some time on lexicanum)

4. please place the word homebrew before a chapter you made yourself

example post:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

ultramarines

sons of Medusa - iron hands

minators - unknown

homebrew - angles of bitterness - dark angles

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for following the format rules it will make this a million times easier to count up.

Poll closed above are the results

i was surprised at the prominence of imperial fist players, i suspect there will be a lot of bolter's re-rolling 1's next month. i was however expecting a lot more black Templar players however if GW is seeing this kind of data it may explain why they were folded in to codex space marines

What do you think of the data? are there any trends we can pull from it?

Ok... So, like this:

I like chapters that are awesome. Chapters that are awesome are way awesomer than chapters that aren't awesome. Actually, I'm being silly. My two marine armies are meant to epitomize the two different things that Space Marines do: mindless zealous slaughter and brilliant tactics. For that reason, my two chapters are...

Knights of Blood - Blood Angels

Exorcists - Unknown (But who are we kidding, probably Grey Knights).

In the same vein, I'm kind of thinking of starting Grey Knights, because it would be interesting to use them as Allies for my Exorcists, and I'm too self-aware to imagine that anything I start to buy as Allies isn't going to eventually turn into a full faction.

I mean, who am I kidding? I know who I am. I know what I am. *Sob*. Relatedly, I also play Sisters of Battle.

Exactly like that i hope we can get a nice big data set. i should probably add myself in too

Well, I quickly got bored with painting powered armor, so I painted my Space Marine army as a "crusade" made up of representatives from different chapters. I have a terminator squad of Imperial Fists, a tactical squad of Ultramarines, a devastator squad of Dark Angels, an assault squad of Blood Angels, etc.

In the old rules-set, I used the "vanilla" codex to represent 'em - not sure what I'll do now!

I'm not sure if this counts, but I play various Heresy-Era Legions. The fluff just speaks much more to me, and I love exploring the different marks of armour. To play, I enjoy legions that complement one another and have similar discipline and moral codes. I have about 1500pts of each, except the Ultramarines (5000). So, here's the list:

XIII Ultramarines

IX Blood Angels

VII Imperial Fists

X Iron Hands

VI Space Wolves

V White Scars

My first Space Marine army was the Salamanders, as long ago in 3rd edition I played my poorly-assembled-and-painted Eldar against a fully tooled-up Salamanders army, and that was cemented 40k as a hobby for me. I would continue playing the Salamanders, but trying to get a really good fiery green is driving me to uncouth words and deeds, so I have been in the process of swapping over to:

The Ultramarines 3rd Company, a.k.a. "The Scourge of the Xenos". The have a special dislike of Tyranids, to the point where their Company Banner features a Tyranid head impaled on a sword. For me, the 3rd Company offers a wide range of modelling opportunities by incorporating bits of their defeated foe into their armor; currently my Captain has a Storm Shield made from the topplate of a Carnifex, and the Company Champion has a custom shoulderguard mounting the head of a slain Tyranid Warrior.

Still not sure where the Grey Knight Geneseed came from, although the Emperor is a good guess.(wink wink) While i sold most of my space wolves long ago (i really regret this) i still have all my HQ characters and some older squad models, and play Kill Team stuff with them when the opportunity pops up.

1. Grey Knights - Unknown (because of Inquisition)

2. Space Wolves

I own Grey Knights. I have enough Space Marine models to field a solid allied contingent, but I'm waiting on the new codex and a little extra motivation for that. Same thing with Eldar, I've been sitting on them for a while (a couple years), but I need to really figure out a good paint scheme and a list I'm really happy with before I actually start playing them. I've got my Grey Knights, I won't field a secondary army unless it's fully painted at this point.

As I'm approaching 2k with my Chaos, I'm thinking of picking up some Space Marines for fun. Right now I'm debating between the Minotaurs and Star Phantoms. If the FW special characters replace the traditional Chapter Tactics, then I'll likely go Minotaurs and use Asterion Moloc, otherwise I will most likely do Star Phantoms (Ultramarines: Devestator loadout)

Right now:

Ghost Wardens - 21st Founding Imperial Fists (Black Templar Codex, scheme to the left)

I'm contemplating swapping the scheme back to their original Stone Wardens (same codex and Geneseed, though).

Over the last 25 years i find ive collected a couple of chapters

It started with

Dark Angels, because of space hulk and has the whole 1st company (deathwing) in metal.

Then

The Surley Templars, (aka Custard Marines, bright yellow) vanilla with chapter traits so 6 dreads etc. made the finals of 2007 GW Grand Tournament, did ok but not great.

Then

Space Wolves, just cause the 5th ed codex made them great.

Therefore im hoping that the new codex allows the custards to make a reappearance... Using chapter traits of some sort.

I am a Chaos Marine player, but I do have 2 projects that I am slowly working on, that use the Space Marine Codex. One is my pre-heresy Thousand Sons built with the SM codex, that can also be used as non cult Tzeentch Chaos Marines. The second is my fun army built on the idea that the second Primarch (one of the missing Primarchs) is actually a Matriarch and her name was Helena found on the planet Amazon, whose capitol was Sparta. She was killed by Guilliman over a love tryst between her, Guilliman and the 11th Legion Primarch (Paris) from the Planet Troy.

Her legion has all the same things as normal Space Marines, but the initiates are all female. They are a hidden Chapter built by the remnants/ survivors of the Guilliman Massacre, and helped along by allied Mechanicus, and local sisters of Battle who are devout to the Daughters of Helen chapter. The Sisters even test their recruits, and those who are compatible with the Matriarchs geneseed, go through the initiation process.

I have gathered models from a number of sources/companies for the Chapter, many of which have now gone the way of the Do-Do. I started on the Battle Company because of all the purist gamers who kept saying you can not have female Space Marines. I just love rebelling against the imperial norms. Hence the fact that I have elements/ units to create nearly 6 whole Chaos Marine Legion Battle Companies. (They just need painting, and some need a few more units).

With the new SM codex, I can choose which ever chapter traits I like for my female SM force, and go with the one that gives the best bonuses.

The things I love most about space marines are juxtaposing their status as the preeminent warriors of mankind with being (i) insufferable self-important pricks, (ii) non-infantry commandos, and (iii) the hilarity of taking the codex TO&E literally. I couldn't find a sufficiently literalist chapter for my tastes, so I play:

Homebrew; Brotherhood of Fire, Successors of the Imperial Fists.

Really need to update their background, as I wrote it back in 2004. Not only has my ability to write quality prose improved dramatically, but my understanding of 40k and its related background has come on leaps and bounds. Most of what I wrote back then doesn't really make any sense now, but the essentials shall stay the same; early founding (before the cursed 13th founding), siege specialists, like an all or nothing approach to war and are very careful about dividing their force/strength, so will often only commit to theatres of war where at least a company strength force is required.

Dark Angels - @30 models Small vehicle based force, got them during 3rd.

Death Guard - @ 300 models Pre/Post Heresy, Loyalist/Traitors. Started during 4th.

1. My oldest chapter is my homebrew Sunhawks. They've typically been played as vanilla marines but when traits were in vogue, they had the trait that allowed boatloads of apothecaries.

2. My next oldest (and not by much) is sort of a homebrew, my Loyalist Emperors Children. They're played with BA rules, the DC are marines who've gone over the edge and gone berserk in their absolute need to redeem their honor.

3. My most recent homebrew is my Storm Riders. They were an all bike/mounted force that I'm hoping the new codex will make viable again.

Don't be silly. We all know you play a homebrew chapter descended from one of the lost primarchs, with special dispensation from the inquisition to employ ancient heretical technologies in order to field a force composed entirely of female half-Eldar Space Marines.

Home brew: Emperor's Pryde, successor chapter of the Iron Hands.

Space Wolves

Home brew: Sanguine Brotherhood, successor chapter of Blood Angels.

The Pryde have a lion theme with dirty gold armor with Black highlights. Heavy techmarines. Not quite into bionics as parent chapter but much more accepting than other chapters. Fleet based chapter who specialize in ash, desert, and wasteland warfare. Follow codex rules but have a higher percentage of scouts than other chapters due to heavy losses in several campaigns vs Orks and Chaos. Have formed a loose alliance with Tau after two of their companies were nearly whipped out from an Ork assault on Terigon IV.

Foehammers Chapter (homebrew) -IH successor. Close ties to a Forge World, but due to location near the Maelstrom (far side from Badab) they tend to get cut off from the Imperium at large, and are rather insular and isolationist as a result. Tend to scavenge/salvage/steal equipment when they can (much like Marines Malevolent or Blood Ravens) and are more willing to modify doctrine and wargear as they tend to operate on their own (I like to use parts from various kits, and sometimes feel like running other codices or characters. Generally run Pedro Sternguard lists, or Khan with bikers.)

Sometimes I think about trying to field my Exorcists as Grey Knights. The only problem is that a lot of the wargear is significantly different. My Exorcist terminators have power fists - Grey Knight terminators have swords. My Exorcist tactical marines have bolters - Grey Knight strike teams have storm bolters and melee weapons. I kind of worry that it would annoy my opponents.

I have 2000 points of them that I don't use anymore, and funnily enough I used the standard Marine codex, it gave me access to a lot more things that the Storm Wardens are known to use, i.e. Stormravens

I can tell you exactly why i went with an imperial fist chapter successor :) when i first got into the game my buddy who got me into marines plays ultra marines... so already not off to a good start lol. well as i went into the fluff i was more and more drawn the the fists and Dorn. there have been may battle since i first got into the hobby over how much of a tool gurlyman is and as such fists just fit my attitude and play style. the whole concept of almost causing a mini civil war because i thought my brother was a twit simply appealed to me :) the whole everyone wanted to be an ultra marine made it even more so that i would be playing a chapter that wasn't ultra marines. I 've always felt GW missed the boat when they focused so heavily on the ultras each of the other first founding chapters bring such a unique outlook and organization and character.
