Small carved stones unearthed in a nearly 5,000-year-old burial could represent the earliest gaming tokens ever found, according to Turkish archaeologists who are excavating early Bronze Age graves.

Found in a burial at Başur Höyük, a 820- by 492-foot mound near Siirt in southeast Turkey, the elaborate pieces consist of 49 small stones sculpted in different shapes and painted in green, red, blue, black and white.

"Some depict pigs, dogs and pyramids, others feature round and bullet shapes. We also found dice as well as three circular tokens made of white shell and topped with a black round stone," Haluk Sağlamtimur of Ege University in İzmir, Turkey, told Discovery News.

We all come from a long line of gaming ancestors my friends...

I can already imagine Fertile Crescent Tynskel and Eldargal debating whether "pig" is undercosted and "pyramid" spam is ruining the game...

No, the problem is that sphere is just intrinsically better than disk as a mechanic, and it disadvantages all the armies that rely on disk. That's why they have to field so many more pyramids.

The pyramids are okay, but I would have liked to see more edge highlighting ...

Phoenicians are totally beardy. They never do more than the one-color minimum.

I'm not even playing until they bring out a new edition or adopt the UrNAT FAQ as standard.

You gotta have some serious stones to play that game.

What if it's the same Matt Ward. What if he never dies? What if he just... goes on?

Archaeologists now believe that the ancient scripts and carvings covering the walls of temples are actually an ancient form of 'message board' in which players in long lost civilizations argued over the merits and detriments of yet-to-be-released factions such as cone.

You forgot to include 'factions they know little about other than its name and shape, but still go on and on math hammering despite the lack of defined integers'

It'll be the iron age before we see cone come out, if ever - they've been totally hexagonn'd.

pretty sure this proves Sisters of Battle are never going to be released...

Of course it was the 3rd party discs which killed off the game...

I miss the hexagons they were so cool. Certainly better than discs.

Am i the only one who thinks cube should get an update? They just struggle mightily! However I hear good things about the octagon supplement... even if power creep means everyone needs eight (or more) of them

Mat Ward is the Emperor? I dare you to go post that up in the 40k section and watch the Internet melt.

Eldargal would probably be protesting poor working conditions for women, and Tynskel would be arguing with some random trolls over an unusual and obscure wording of how dogs deploy.

I'd probably be revered as the avatar of a fertility goddess and able to have anyone who disagreed with me on rules interpretation executed.

Bah, my thunder god brings the rain and makes me strong and virile, I refuse to acknowledge you false prophet. You and your heathen pointy eared goddess have no place here!

It is all the large white Obelisks that rule the game. They have smaller black obelisks there to give the opponents some hope, but then make it that armies with small black obelisks can never have pyramids in them.

Pointed pieces will never match up to the curves of discs, spheres, and ovals. The metagame is all wrong for it.

Pig is suboptimal.

Well clearly, they'd tried to combine points and curves and blunted the effectiveness of either.
