Behold: Barbarus' Sting

A Death Guard fortress used during the Great Crusade.

As a bit of background I'm just not feeling the competetive gaming vibe in between all the Helfrake this, Cron-air that and general Chaos Daemon FMC craziness. So it was time to just kick back and work on my beloved fluff based army - the Heresy Death Guard. So I bought them a summer villa.

I'll be doing work in progress on this one. Wish me luck!

Whew - 1/4 a pint of flat white interior housepaint later...

Tomorrow, after it's dried fully is one final top layer of drybrush on the high parts to get a cleaner white, then the detailing begins...

This thing is crazy enormous!

I couldn't believe how huge the Aquila strongpoint was when I saw it in person for the first time

Very lovely.:) Not sure why but the Aquila looks smaller in the photos if anything, I wasn't prepared for it's size (hur) either.

Getting there...

Tightening up the Aquila first. Will be hitting the trenches next. Lots of liner work on panel lines, limited use of metallic detail and the green glacis on the turret. I'm also wrapping up the copper vertigris on the macro-cannon housing.

I am very glad I ignored people when they said the Aquila Strongpoint would be a massive waste of money, that it wouldn't be big enough to justify the cost. That said, I have punctured my skin a couple of times leaning on spikes whilst trying to paint some of the inner panel on the battlements.

That is looking top notch BigRed. Lookingforward to seeing how the scheme carries on to the trenches and stand alone guns

The colour scheme translates really well to the terrain, often painting up terrain in similar army colours looks a bit Disney but this is nice.

Especially like the blue steel wings.

OK, all done for today - I'm tired.

Got first pass on all the trenchlines, and further tightening of the Aquila.

Did a lot of shading linework all over the trenchlines.
Increased linework contrast on the Aquila
Made my "battlefield rot" wash for all the dead guardsmen/equipment to add some contrast to the trenchlines. The forumla is:
-1/5 pot Devlan Mud
-1/5 botttle Secret Weapon Blackbody wash
-10 drops knarloc green
-10 drops vallejo livery green
-Dilute the entire mix with an equal part water

Next up is the gun batteries, and to find some dark wash in large enough quantities to flood the floor panels of the trenchlines to increase the contrast.

Love t mate. You've inspired me to get my own vengence batteries and then finally work on my own game table.

Aha nice to see Stickmonkey is cranking away at yet another Aquila!

I've done yet more...

So we've washed and highlighted the trenchline gridplates, done a first pass on the small turrets, and gotten on decals.

Mortarion, Typhus and Garro are giving it an inspection...

Next up is a final fine detail pass, and the Missile battery array under the macro cannon. I also need a place to stick a Legion flag.

So I already want to add onto my fortress. Should I do:

Another set of Trenchlines?
Firestorm Redoubt?

Awesome setup, I'd really like to see your Garro model though and I certainly think the Death Guard would think the more trenchlines the better.

You know my thoughts on this. The firestorm redoubt is great as a AA unit, however so far my oure 30k games have yet to have a lot of flyers to worry about.

More trenchlines! They always help to make a battlefield look a lot more spiffy.
