ULTRAMARINES: CODEX PICTURES ANNOUNCE DIRECTOR AND WRITER!

Codex Pictures revealed today the director and screenwriter for the forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 movie ULTRAMARINES.

The director is Martyn Pick, whose credits include the 2009 film The Age of Stupid, on which he was animation director; London 2012, the promotional film commissioned by Film London and the London Development Agency which was premiered at the Beijing Olympics; the 2001 US Budweiser NBA commercial; and the celebrated BBC promotional trailers for the Euro 2004 soccer tournament. Martyn was chosen to direct Ultramarines for his renowned and highly distinctive ability to fuse live action and animation and the fluid, rich painterly style of his film-making.

The screenplay has been written by someone who needs no introduction to Warhammer 40,000 fans – best-selling author Dan Abnett. Dan has penned more than 25 books for Games Workshop’s Black Library, with total sales in excess of 1.2 million copies. He also works regularly for 2000 AD, Marvel Comics and DC Comics and has recently seen publication of the first of three novels for HarperCollins' new sci-fi, fantasy and horror imprint, Angry Robot.

ULTRAMARINES, a sci-fi thriller employing CGI and state-of-the-art production techniques, is being produced by Codex Pictures in association with Good Story Productions Ltd. The Canadian co-producer is POP6 Studios.

Abnett with Good Story Porductions? Ultramarines with Codex Pictures? sounds like a conspiracy to me (or is it just a series of implausible coincidences?).

my hopes for this film are raised now to "probably good". let's see how the director plays out.

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say it is the greatest moment of my life. But I'm stoked

Melissia on new Ultramarines movie: *yawn* *changes channel*

They'll probably break the fluff to make Marines actually capable of being empathized with. Hopefully this at least means they'll eventually produce something interesting, such as an Imperial Guard movie or an Inquisition movie (lots of potential there).

edit: Oh, and before the inevitable flames. I stand by the opinion that the only thing good about this movie will be that it possibly opens the way for more interesting movies.

Realist? No way it's almost as if your saying that the only good thing about the movie 300 was that then they might make a movie abor Athens, because Spartans can't be identified with... Sorry, but you'd be wrong.

I don't deny that my opinion that this movie will be mediocre at best is exactly that-- my opinion.

Well, Mel you aren't allowed an opinion on something so important as a 40k movie!

Seriously, I think even you will be pleasntly suprised.

But only if I hold it to a low standard to begin with.

Who needs standards when you can have explosions!!! Regardless of plot, I want to see the movie just for the battles.

For anyone of a similar opinion, check out any movie Tony Jaa has ever done. I've even watched on in a foreign language, with no dub or subtitles, and enjoyed it, because the whole point of those movies is to watch Tony Jaa pull of amazingly ridiculous martial arts stunts, and beat more people into senseless, bloody pulps than Chuck Norris could ever hope to.

Im pretty much in it for the same thing. Although if anyone could make a 40k Ultra-smurf script with deep plot... yeah, Dan Abnett by far.

Well, they have someone who can write, someone who seems who can direct, let's hope they don't go for a "family" film.

I have to say I really understand where Melissa is coming from with her doubts (I shared them), but I am actually a lot more optimistic about this now than I was when I first heard about the film. I saw the interview with Abnett about it, and he actually expressed that he had many of the same misgivings Melissa has mentioned. However, he claims to have been really reassured by what he has seen of the film’s development, and further claims that he expects it to be good.

We all know Abnett can tell a story, and has a good grasp on the lore and “feel” of the 40k universe, so in my opinion his endorsement bodes well for the film.

We shall see…

I saw that Dan Abnet wrote the script, I almost cryed in joy. I love everything he has ever written, favourite Author full stop. Personally I hope the movie is on the battle for Macragge but anything else would be good also.

I'm always skeptical as to how good a movie based on a game can really be but I'm looking forward to this especially now that I see Dan Abnett is writing the script.

I'm in two minds on this. There's the part of me that 'wants' this to be good, this part is encouraged by the involvement of Dan Abnett and hopeful for a Battle of Macragge storyline. Then there's the part that realises that Melissia is right, that part is just saddened by the whole effort and wishes they wouldn't bother.

In short I want this to be good but I'm virtually certain it won't be.

If anyone can make the story line work its Dan Abnett,
I thought his "Brothers of the Snake" was brilliant & actually showed a human side to Space Marines. If he comes up with somthing similar it should be great.
Remember this movie is not only for us 40K gamers. It will need to make money & if it is successful, who knows we might just get lucky & get IG, Inquisition, Chaos & Mellissa be praised, Sisters of Battle! ;)

We might get one or two of those elements, but not all of them... I just hope gw doesn't try to do something like "battle for black reach" to push game sales. I would love to see large scale engagement!

Ultramarines... eh. Blood Angels would have been better, less 'perfect', more personality to them. An Inquisitor movie would have been even better though. A movie is the perfect place to flesh out the 40K universe for things like civilian garb and little things like that, but a bolter porno won't feature much of that. Lots of explosions though, so that's ok.

I'm going to get it, but I'm not expecting too much. Abnett wrote the original script, but as he says in the interview it has had rewrites and such, and he was pleasantly suprised at how similar what he wrote was what was on screen. It won't be pure Abnett, but hopefully this one will do well enough that more will be made.

.

The movie is going to be 70 min long. Not much time to flesh out the universe, especially since they'll want to explain as much as they can for the benefit of people who don't know much about 40k.

I was meaning that little details can be shown in the background of scenes of an Inquisitor doing his thing than marines running around chansawing everything in sight. Given it's going straight to DVD I don't see it having a huge crossover market anyway.

Explaining everything also means people won't have to go into a store to find out more, and possiby be interested in another army even if Marines or (orks? nids?) aren't their thing.
