a small excerpt:

But in 1987 -- more than half a century after the sci-fi world had combined the chocolate of "space" with the peanut butter of "marines" -- Games Workshop published a science fiction strategy game called Warhammer 40,000. One of the character classes in it was called "space marine," which Games Workshop quickly trademarked. From that moment forward, anyone else publishing a sci-fi tabletop game had to fill it with space seamen instead. Or something.

Heh, they didn't even mention the part about how GW had to take down their own Facebook page, because their P.R. strategy is not to have a P.R. strategy.

No, they took it down because whiney douchenozzles were overloading the interwebs, and Tim Berners-Lee kindly asked them to take it down, lest the world fall into chaos and ruin.

They also didn't mention the part where GW was targeting people using "Space Marine" as proper noun, of which they own the Trademark for.

Lets not forget they also trade marked the word Exarch, which is actually a title from the Byzantine empire.

So? People trademark words that have exists for centuries all the time. Trademark is around context.

I'm surprised that when Wizard's of the Coast tried to trademark the word "Dragon" didn't make the list. I think it was Wizards... whoever owned Dungeons and Dragons at the time.
