View Full Version : Trying to Decide Which Armies to Keep...

Anyone want to help?

At this point, I own Blood Angels Space Marines, Exorcists Space Marines, a small Sisters of Battle force (originally intended as allies for my Blood Angels), Tau, and Eldar. This is too much, considering that Warhammer 40k is my least favorite game that is still fun enough for me to play. I don't want to get into an argument about the merits and flaws of Warhammer 40k. I like to play it, paint it, and convert it, but I don't like it as much as I like Warmachine/Hordes, Infinity, Malifaux, or Firestorm Armada, so having five armies is a bit dumb for me.

So, I'm considering selling down. The question is, which should I get rid of?

I will hear all arguments, no matter how personal or anecdotal. I think I'd like to sell down to just two armies, though I could see keeping two armies that work together well (for example, keeping both my Blood Angels and Sisters of Battle).

Im in the same boat as you for different reasons.
Id sell your sisters, (hanging on to them in vain hope like me) im selling mine.
And tau, i just dont like them in 6th with new dex.
Im downsizing to 1 army from 4 as i dont play enough to warrant 4, and i love FW.
Keeping my astral claws as i can indulge my FW tendencies.
Good luck.

It really comes down to which you enjoy playing more. I personally went from marines to Eldar because I was tired of playing marines vs marines fight.

That said, I suggest keeping Sisters because they need more love, although that may mean keeping a marine allies force. Eldar and Tau do make good allies to.

Personally, I'd sell high. If an army is painted, and you can get a nice price for the models, I'd sell that one.

If it were me, I'd keep your sisters and Eldar and put the rest on the sales/trading block.

If you're in it for the money, you can definitely sell the Tau and Eldar for a higher price these days than you can for the Sisters. Keep in mind that the Space Marines are getting a new Codex next month, so you could get a higher bang for your buck by grabbing the new codex and selling it with your Exorcists.

But really it all comes down to what you find the most fun out of all of them, and I'd keep them. But acting sooner rather than later on the Tau and Eldar can have you commanding a premium for those items.

When I had too much, I cut back to:
1 Imperial
1 Chaos
1 Xenos
MEQ & GEQ / horde & MSU.

I ended up with primary armies of:
- Imperial Guard
- Chaos Marines
- Eldar
with a side of Sisters of Battle, but that's it for 40k.

recommendations

In your case:
- keep Blood Angels - keep them, as they're iconic and you listed them first, as first among things to keep. You obviously like them, so they stay.
- sell Exorcists - sell, as you like the Blood Angels better, and you don't need 2 Loyalist Marine Chapters.
- keep Tau or Eldar - keep one (keep whichever you prefer); either will ally with your Blood Angels. I'm biased toward Eldar, as they have more toys and go farther back, but Tau has grown into a well-developed army.
- sell Sisters - sell, as they're small and semi-duplicative with Tau and Eldar providing semi-elite S3 T3 models.

That gets you to Blood Angels + 1 Xenos army. If you want the Trinity of Imperial-Chaos-Xenos Armies, keep the Exorcist models, but convert them into Chaos Marines of some sort.

If you don't play much, then maybe you are best off retaining whatever you are most proud of from a painting/modelling standpoint, so that your hard work doesn't go off into the aether of the eBay. Aside from that, I would keep whatever you enjoyed playing the most or what you liked the story of the most, as that is what you are likely to enjoy at some point in the future if you choose to play more.

No! Keep all of them you must, it is the way of a collector! Some is good, all is best!

I would recommend the following:

Sell 1 space marine army
Sell either Tau or Eldar
Sell sisters of battle

The space marine armies don't differ enough in their gameplay to justify keeping both of them. Keep the one you like the most (best painted, army composition, favourite fluff etc.) Secondly, choose between the Tau and Eldar - you only need 1 xenos army if you play infrequently and aren't the biggest fan of 40k.

Lastly, sell the sisters - normally I'd advocate to hang onto them as they are cool and will one day receive an update. However, they were just an allied detachment to an army you may even sell. Let someone else enjoy them :)

Never sell any army unless you really need the cash. You'll only regret it if you have invested any time and effort in them. If you're insistent, keep BA and SoB. Sell Marines, Tau and Eldar. That will be the latest 3 codexes (in a coupe of months) and no one can accuse you of band-waggoning.

Personally I would keep the Exocists and Tau, the Exocists can be used as either Vanilla or if you really want to counts as Blood Angels. So there you have 2 armies in one.

Keep the Tau, they are Battle brothers with the Exocists if you use the vanilla codex.

New Vanilla Codex is rumoured to be very soon. Your will be able to add some new toys to the Exocists :)

Nice to see you back on the boards, where you been hiding ?

Thanks for all your help, guys. My wife convinced me not to sell any armies. She pointed out that I haven't come to dislike any of them (the way I came to dislike my Cygnar, which I traded for Khador). I might put some of them in foam and shove them in the back of a closet, but probably I shouldn't sell them.

Kind of a longish story, actually.

I've decided that I wanted to up my game and compete in some tournaments next summer. Warmachine was the best intersection of "game I like a lot" and "game that has a tournament scene." So, I traded my Cygnar for Khador, and now I'm gearing up for next summer's tournaments. Anyway, as you know, there isn't much a WarmaHordes presence here, so I'm mostly over on Privateer Press's forums.

You'll probably see me around when I need a break from my Khador... but I'll probably be focusing on my lizardmen, because those new models look sweet, and like I said, bored of 40k at the moment.

Sell the sisters. The rarity means you'll likely make a profit on them, due to the metal being easily stripped, and they'll likely be redone in plastic in the arm waving future.

Keep Tau or Eldar.

I would say that any models I have ever sold, I have regretted. I wont sell stuff again, unless its paint to sell.

Any word yet on what you're giving up? Just curious.
