View Full Version : Suggestions for using Asurmen?

I'm putting together a new Eldar army from stuff I have lying around. In doing so, I realized that I can build Asurmen from bits. The thing is, I haven't run a Phoenix Lord since Baharroth in the old Craftworld codex.
So I'm looking for suggestions on which units to run him with. I have Dire Avengers, Storm Guardians, Guardian Defenders, Banshees, Harlequins, Fire Dragons, Wraithguard, and 2 Wave Serpents. (I have other stuff that isn't relevant). I'm not making any purchases any time soon.
The other HQ I will be running is a Farseer on Jetbike with the Mantle of the Laughing God and a Singing Spear.
Thanks in advance!

I'd run him with the fire dragons or wraithguard. His 2+/4++ save can soak a lot of firepower and you can LOS AP1/2 hits. They are going to be at the business end of the fighting so more opportunity for him to get stuck in.

He actually works well with banshees - especially if he rolls up that warlord trait that can re-roll wounds once a game.
Just watch out about getting him in combat with walkers. Only thing he really can't handle.

But why use Banshees in the first place? Scorpions are better in every sense against every target, including the heavy infantry Banshees are supposed to be specialized against. The Scorpion Exarch can also better handle the inevitable challenges while Asurmen rampages through enemy units. Also consider using a Spiritseers to back him up if you can manage to cram a second detachment into your list, the extra characteristic +1s they can give you can make a real difference in close combat.
On a side note, I also recently kitbashed an Asurmen myself for the exact same reason. I love the fact that the Phoenix Lords are usable now!

Thanks, Defenestratus, I couldn't find a way to do that without being a douche.
Both suggestions have merit. I really like the banshees, though they do seem like a challenge. Running Asurmen with Fire Dragons seems quirky, but I can see possibilities.
What about Storm Guardians? I know they're not the greatest unit, but I have a unit of 11 with 2 flamers. Seems like I could jump out of a serpent and do a fair amount of damage to infantry, then try to run into cover for an assault the following round. Is that crazy?
New info: I have 2 regular opponents who play Dark Eldar and Tau. I don't play in tournaments.

Well, he's a Dire Avenger, so I'd add him to the Dire Avengers, but that seems like a waste unless you use the wave serpent to get close, shoot and let him handle an assault.
My rule of thumb: If he's a shooty character, stick him with shooty guys. If he's a stabby character, stick him with the stabby guys. So, I'd put him with the Banshees.

Because I'm a little too Fluff obsessed, I've always kept Phoenix Lords with 'their' aspect, and of course that works well for most of them. Asurmen with Banshees works though. Don't forget his D3 Warlord traits as well, meaning he could end up being truly horrible (Fates messenger would be the dream for example).
One thought though is that given you have regular opponents and are not looking for tournament play, give him a try with the Wraithguard and have them count as Wraithblades for a game, assuming your regular guys are cool with it.

Asurmen
Farseer - try to get Fortune and/or doom and then prescience
10x Dire Avengers w/SS Exarch
Reroll everything in CC and shooting. Take an objective or collect kill points.

I got this combo with Eldrad and Asurmen. Had fortune, doom, guide, and prescience with the mentioned Dire avenger set up. They were practically invincible. Plus the dark reapers re rolling to hit and wound would wipe out one squad/vehicle per turn.

When I run that squad I'll support it with other nearby DAs and Guardians in serpents. Turn one flat-out move and unless my opponent deploys castled up in a corner he has a huge problem on his hands and is badly out of position.

Got a game coming up against my nemesis (a Tau player). 2000 pts and I'm trying out a unit of wraithguard with d-scythes with a spiritseer and Asurmen in a waveserpent. I'll let you all know how that works out!

On a side note, can we get an FAQ for this codex please?

Because that would be productive.

It honestly is. They compile the FAQs at least partly from questions they get sent. For realsies.

Alright so just finished up my game trying out Asurmen and I just have to say holy crap he is awesome. I had him deployed with a unit a 5 wraithblades with d-scythes (also my first time trying them out) and a spiritseer.
I must have prayed to the right chaos god or one of my units was the laughing god in disguise or something because I rolled the warlord trait that lets you re-roll saves of 1 and my spiritseer rolled renewer as a psychic power...let's just say he was kind of tough. He allowed the unit to survive two rounds of shooting from 2 units of firewarriors and 1 unit of 2 broadsides within rapid fire range. The Tau only managed to put 2 wounds on him the whole game and they were promptly healed by the spiritseer. Honestly he didn't do all that much damage since the d-scythes annihilated everything before he really got a chance, but really he's just about worth it just to be an awesome tank (with 6T thanks to the wraithguard!). I will certainly be fitting him in more and more lists from now on
