View Full Version : Eldar Phantom Titan diorama

MrChaos

A commission job for a client. The idea is a Khorne Lord of Skulls smashes through an Imperial defence line, but second later a bolt of laser pierces through the chest of the Lord of Skulls destroying the infernal machine.

The Eldar Phantom Titan places it's feet at the wrecked of the Lord of Skulls, posing dramatically.

Client agreed on the 'overly ambitious' idea.

*ulp*

Ok here goes!!! :sunny:

It goes without saying but that is a *big* Eldar. The dis-articulated has come along quite nicely. The arm is the only thing that is throwing off my eye so far; the elbow joint does not allow any repose, correct? It is a minor complaint in what is shaping up to be a great diorama!

Today I completed the torso. A 3mm pin was slotted right in the middle connecting to the pelvis. The torso and hands will have to be magnetized as the Phantom Titan will be armed with a variety of weapons.

Looking incredible!

For the water effects, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you are just talking about puddle depths, there are a ton of products that go under the title "Water Effects", including GW's own. Mostly they come as a milky white liquid that dries clear so long as the air isn't too humid and you keep them clear of dust and prodding fingers until they are fully dry. Seriously, DO NOT attempt to work out if it is dry until it is completely clear as it will ruin the look of the water irreversibly. You can use multiple layers of these products to build up some depths, but if you aren't careful, these layers can be visible once you are done and you're looking at a few hundredths of a millimetre per layer if you want it to dry in a day. You can also use a clear, colourless Varnish for a similar method, which will give thicker layers but wont always look as good.

If you want anything deeper than one or two millimetres (which is up to the ankles on most models!) you really do need to look in to clear resins. I just picked up one called E-Z WATER, which comes in the form of small pellets that you heat up to melt then simply pour on to your desired depth. Unlike chemical reaction resins (where you have to mix a hardener in or similar) the depth doesn't matter as it will eventually cool, but chemical reactions usually need air to complete, so you can end up with unreacted/unset blobs in the middle of your piece if you aren't careful. They will just ruin the model and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

My brothers used a chemical reaction resin to make an entire ocean board for Dystopian Wars, it took eight months to set completely.

Thanks for all the help regarding clear resin choices. I picked up Easy Cast at the local art shop and voila! Instant water effects.

The leaking blood was done using a peice of transparent plastic from a water bottle. Basically I cut a long thin flat plastic piece and slowly work my way with clear resin to shape the leak.

It's pretty easy, you get two bottles of liquid. Mix them both together and pour over the selected area. If you want to shape the resin, just wait for an hour for the resin to cure. It will become a honey like texture and therefore easy to shape.

I was just looking at this stuff in AC Moore on Sunday. Did you tint this with ink/wash, or did you wash/tint afterwards?
At the same time while mixing the liquids. I used Tamiya clear red for the blood tinting.

WIP of the Phantom Titan. I used Tamiya smoke for the dark shading, then airbrushed Temple Guard Blue to soften the Tamiya smoke.

Legs were then masked and a mix of Tamiya Flat White and German Grey is sprayed on the kneepads. Followed up by Flat White as a shade.
