I really like the older style paint scheme for Ultramarines, but I cannot figure out what blue(s) they are using, and the current paint guide is for the newer, darker, scheme. Does anyone know what mix of blue they are using to achieve the bright, crayola look? (Side note: I have a general idea of the other colours they are using, but if anyone knows the specifics that would also be helpful).

Examples of what I'm talking about(the dread and assault squad in particular):

Some of the older paint jobs use straight up UM Blue with Enchanted as teh highlight, and Ice as the final highlight..

looks to me like a 1:1 or 2:1 ultramarine/spacewolf blues

I'd try something along the lines of what lobster-overlord suggested - straight Ultramarines Blue, maybe with an Enchanted Blue layer, Blood Red and Sunburst Yellow for the details.

Enchanted is alot darker than UM blue so isnt likely to be the highlight colour.
Its more likely Um blue with 1:1 UM and ice for highlight with ice for a final one

Enchanted blue seems reasonable, since my pot of UM Blue is close to periwinkle(if that's still what they call that purple-blue colour).

Apparently it's straight Ultramarines Blue over a white undercoat.
Huzzah for old painting guides! :D

I'm pretty sure those jump marines are from second edition (the 2nd ed rule books has both the old Rogue Trader dark blue on the older models and the newer, lighter blue on the new ones) - I still have most of the box of them lying around somewhere! They changed the colours when they released the metal + plastic boxes circa 1990 (http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/index.htm)-92 (http://www.solegends.com/citcat9x4/index.htm). The tactical squad in the first link is in transition colours (appearing in the Compilation), and the jumpy marines are at the end of the colour transition.

This means the colours where marine dark blue and ultramarine blue over white (from these paint sets (http://www.littlemetalmen.com/useful.php?stuff=oldcitps)). When Citadal changed suppliers all the colours changed (from slightly to drastically - it still confuses me sometimes). The old supplier was Coat d'Arms (http://www.blackhat.co.uk/coat_darms/), and it looks like Ultramarine Blue is availabel as Marine Blue (see colour conversion chart from a third party site (http://www.paintingclinic.com/productreviews/cdaconversionchart.htm)). Can't see Marine Dark Blue though.

Maybe try a blend of Ultramarine/Ice blue over a white basecoat with a 2:1 Ice Blue/white highlight?

I should really learn to read the whole post... Vindur suggested the same thing earlier *me smacks hisself upside the head

Actually you have a few diff paint schemes there.

The Dread is straight from 2nd Edition codex while the Land Speeder and the 3rd Tac Squad are abit darker than the older scheme.

Either way i agree with the UM blue to EB to ice.

Yikes, saw the starting date, sorry to continue the threadromancy lol.
