Couldn't find the old thread, so here's a new one for all PS4-related discussion.

To kick us off, the official Playstation Twitter posted this picture about an hour ago;

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/07/Sony_tease-610x915.jpg

No-one has any real idea what it is referencing, save that it likely wouldn't be an already announced game - precluding Destiny, of course. The next logical one would be Playstation All Stars Battle Royale 2, but the purple and the planet just don't seem to fit - unless it is a very vague reference to Polygon Man.

The most interesting and valid link I've seen so far is a new God of War, particularly when one views this video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29Jy65eEqUw

Seems too much of a coincidence not to be the next God of War, and it begs the question, could God of War be moving into a modern or sci-fi era now? The end of God of War 3 (*spoilers* Kratos disappears off the cliff after seemingly suffering a mortal wound *end spoilers*) leaves lots of possibilities, so this seems a very distinct possibility. The purple light doesn't really fit God of War - and it isn't the green light seen in the Ascension Easter Egg - but when I looked closely at the image, I could make out a broken and very indistinct Omega symbol. Probably just me wanting to see one though.
Thoughts?

God of War would be a big early release thing.

Why they wouldn't show something so big at E3 if its ready in some form is wierd though

Intriguing!

Didn't really enjoy the prequel God of War game. There was nowt really wrong with it, but it didn't really add anything new in terms of gameplay, so more a missed opporchancity!

But getting a PS4 regardless!

That was Spartan Total Warrior, the hack and slahs made by creative assembly

Start off as a Spartan, fight a bunch of guys and some mythical creatures, then find out you're the son of a god and kill the God of War in the final boss fight.

Sound familiar?

Sony have a major presence at both Gamescom and TGS, unlike Microsoft they tend to hold out a lot of their big stuff and even it out across the three shows. It is understandable on both companies' part realistically as it all comes down to markets; Playstation enjoys its dominance in Europe and Japan, while Xbox dominates North America. In that sense, I wouldn't be surprised if they announce a few really big titles for next year at Gamescom, and an early prediction I will make is that The Last Guardian is being ported to the Playstation 4 ala Final Fantasy Versus 13/15. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if that is exactly the reason why no-one has talked about it since 2011 and also why the game has been delayed several times.

From what I have seen it is still good, but yeah the problem is that it doesn't really change the formula at all.

They both came out the same year too lol.

Turns out IGN are going to be revealing what the image means "in a few days", which likely means their big 300th episode for the Beyond event on Friday. This isn't surprising as Sony officials have started popping up a lot on Beyond lately. As to what it is, a popular theory going around now is that it has something to do with Planetside 2, but I can't imagine what given that they have already said there will be no cross-platform servers.
I really have no idea what it is. It is certainly possible that it is Sony Santa Monica Studio's next game (the God of War devs) but that the hints both here and in Ascension are actually a preview of an entirely new franchise.

Ahem. (http://www.news.com.au/technology/gaming/outrage-over-microsoft-rape-joke-at-e3-gaming-event/story-e6frfrt9-1226662462228)

During a demonstration of video game "Killer Instinct" yesterday a male video game producer was matched against a woman - who struggled to play the game.
First he told her that she "played like a girl", perpetuating the stereotype that girls aren't "proper" gamers.
"I can't even block correctly and you're too fast," she replied.
"Here we go, just let it happen. It'll be over soon," he said.

I particularly love the offline multiplayer - strange I know - as the AI is so much fun to play against in all the rapidly changing objective-based matches. The original was an awesome split screen game. I like that Killzone feels very distinct from other shooters, and the story is above average. Killzone 2 in particular had a fantastic story and though the final boss battle was annoying more than anything else, the actual last encounter was brilliantly done.

I would definitely recommend trying out Killzone 2 and 3 if you get the chance. they are quite distinct to other shooters available, the controls are slighty slower and slightly more complex, which moves the game away from CoD twitchy finger run and gun, and combined with the setting and atmosphere it feels a lot more frantic and gritty, surprisingly realistic for a sci fi shooter. good characters, places, and story, great guns

I watched the live-stream of the conference and watched that part, but it didn't really click in my mind just how offensive that part was until after the conference ended. As I watched it though I did have a bad feeling about the whole thing, so it probably registered on a subconscious level. Really though, it is pretty disgusting no matter what way you look at it.

I couldn't honestly answer what I feel is the best shooter series out at the moment. Having played all of the Halo games, I definitely wouldn't say they are the best. I'm not sure Killzone is my pick either, nor would I say Call of Duty or Battlefield. To be honest though, I think my favourite shooter to this day is Call of Duty 2. Playing through that game on the top difficulty was brutally unfair, but at the same time, amazingly epic. I would probably be playing it now if I could find it lol.

Not at launch, but a service (not sure if free or paid) called Gaikai will allow you to "stream" PS3 games, basically it is like playing the game but with a minor (noticeable but doesn't really affect gameplay) delay.
If Shadow Fall is as good as it is being hyped to be (many think it will be the best Killzone yet) then you may not need to worry about the older ones; the story in the old games probably won't have too much of an impact on the new one, save to explain why two different factions are settled on the same planet.

Haha well I stopped paying serious attention to Call of Duty after World at War, the series just went downhill for me from MW2 because of the lack of any real innovation or change. I only recently bought Black Ops and Black Ops 2 over the past few years to host local split-screen games with my friends at parties, otherwise, I avoid them.

That's understandable. Personally though, the PS3 has an amazing exclusive roster that simply smashes the competition IMO. Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, God of War 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, the Uncharted series, Journey, plus the HD Collections of classics like Shadow of the Colossus and the old Jak and Daxter games. If you can get a PS3 on the cheap and can find all of those games, you should be good. You won't be disappointed!

I'm curious, do/did you own a PS2? Shadow of the Colossus and Ico may very well be worth the price alone, they are two of the best games ever made.

Yeah a lot of people were turned off by MGS4, probably had a lot to do with the....what was it.....80+ hours of cinematics? Yeah, no thanks lol. I guess as a MGS fan though it is probably a love-letter and it was arguably the biggest reason to get a PS3 over a 360 for games at the time.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/07/sonyteaser2-610x915.jpg

The Sony tweet references Insomniac, developers of the Sunset Overdrive exclusive for Xbox One, the Resistance games and - tellingly - the Ratchet and Clank games.
Well, it turns out Insomniac's top dude wasn't lying when he said they still had a good relationship with Sony!

I'm expecting this to be Ratchet and Clank PS4, in fact that seems to be the only possibility it could be. Well played Sony, not a single person I saw came even close to guessing that. Presumably it won't be a launch title.
Actually, this might be a PS3 game. Seems most likely it will be a PS4 game though.
Insomniac announcing something big tomorrow, confirmed it is definitely Ratchet and Clank. However, some hints that it could be linked into the Jak and Daxter universe.....which would be unreal.
Oh snap! A confirmed employee for Insomniac directly responded to someone's guess on Twitter that the image was teasing a Jak and Daxter/Ratchet and Clank cross-over, and he said "That is a REALLY GREAT GUESS!" OOOOH!!!! Whether this is a PS4 game or PS3 game, this is going to be amazing. There hasn't been a proper Ratchet and Clank game in a few years, and the last main Jak game was way back almost a decade ago. OOOOH!!!!!

The same guy says it is a PS4 game! That could be one of the biggest exclusives of this entire darned generation if it is what we think it is.

EDIT: May be a fake account.....gah STOP PLAYING WITH ME SONY!
Well we will apparently learn all tomorrow, supposedly Insomniac are announcing it tomorrow and I presume the 300th edition of Beyond will be dealing heavily with it and feature some of the devs.

This is nice. (http://www.officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk/2013/07/10/ps4s-digital-library-lets-you-play-your-games-anywhere-on-anyones-console/)

“You can visit your friends house you can log into your account and play any game from your digital library, which is good. But how useful is that if it takes half a day to download the game you want to play? With Play As You Download you get much quicker access to at least the first section of the game so you can start playing quicker. So this makes a digital library a practical option in the real world.”

“A similar system also works on Blu-ray, chunks are automatically copied to the hard drive in the background. This means that after the first few minutes your game can rely on having faster read speeds from the hard drive. Which provides a better experience for players, and this is a completely background process for the player. They don’t have to wait for anything to install before playing the game. The game will launch as soon as the disk has been put in the drive.”

It's just a Ratchet and Clank game, and for PS3. Kind of deflating - a cross over on PS4 would have been massive - but still awesome to see the PS3 getting a lot of love. This basically confirms Gamescom and TGS will have a lot of reveals.

I'm going to have to make some tough decisions on which launch games to pick up though, and whether to sacrifice a game for an extra controller so that I can at least play two-player games with my friends. Well if recent rumours are to be believed Rockstar's The Agent is being revived, my tip is that it could very well - like Final Fantasy 15 (and the Last Guardian, if my theory holds) - be in the process of porting to the next-gen. Remember the hub-bub about the Xbox One using up three gigabytes out of eight for its three operating systems? The PS4 apparently uses up about three gigabytes as well. A story was originally published saying it was three and a half gigs, but Sony and 'sources' suggest there is more ram available for games. The sources say about 5 gigs total. Of course, the GDDR5 ram for the gpu on the PS4 still gives it a quite noticeable advantage, though it seems like there is a lot of parity between the two consoles, similar to last gen, with the PS4 having only slightly better specs. I appreciate this to be honest, particularly with the PS4 being a lot easier to develop for, meaning the days of graphical or technical differences determining which platform to buy a multi-platform game on should disappear. This is better for gamers as it actually encourages the first-party studios for either side to make better exclusives.

So....Sony have announced that the Disk Technology in the PS4 and the XONE will be outdated in 2 years time.

Basically Sony and Panasonic have anounced Blu-Ray 2.0. 300Gb of storage compared to the current 50.

Putting that into perspective, a new blu ray (at 300) can hold the same amount of data as 213334 floppy disks could

Wildeybeast

DrLove42

Maybe. The XONE had a plug in HDDVD (remember them?) drive so an "add on" might not be the wildest thing.

However Blu Ray only succeeded in the first place because you could get a "cheap" blu ray in the PS3, at £425 instead of stand alones which costed several times more.

No major game announcements at Gamescom for the PS4, mostly just indie games. Hmmm. Sony seem to be happy to keep their launch window (i.e. the first four months) as it is, which is fair enough given they already had over a million pre-orders as of a week or two ago. Ridiculous pre-order figures, and one of their executives basically confirmed without out-right saying it that the PS4 is out-selling the One (http://au.ign.com/articles/2013/08/29/sonys-jim-ryan-giving-away-fifa-14-on-day-one-is-rather-odd) in pretty much every territory in the world.

Although he didn't cite exact pre-order numbers, Ryan claims the PlayStation 4 is "still doing fine" against the Xbox One.

"It varies from retailer to retailer and it varies from country to country, but I’m not hearin’ of too many places at all – at all – where they’re ahead of us."

I'm still expecting the One to have greater parity come the release of Halo 5/Halo One.....
To be honest, I'll be a bit disappointed if we don't get a big PS4 game announcement at TGS at the very least. Knowing Sony though, they will announce a few big titles around February.

Learn2Eel

Sony just had a monster of a pre-TGS press conference. They announced twelve games between the PS3, Vita and PS4, and also announced 'PS Vita TV'; a very interesting little bit of hardware. No word on if any of this stuff is heading west, but you can expect the big titles will. Lots of great games announced for the Vita in the past few months, it is going to have a massive game library now which is great to see. Oh, and Sony confirmed the PS4 will launch in Japan on February 22 alongside the new Yakuza game. As much as some might complain Sony are leaving Japan out to dry, really, launching the system alongside a big system seller like Yakuza (for Japan anyway) is pure genius.

Oh, and is anyone else amazed that this all happened in the pre-conference presser? What on earth do they have in stock for us at TGS!? Oh, and by the way, remember Deep Down? This game?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbFBEjlKtpY
It has been officially confirmed as a PS4 exclusive, with entirely randomly generated loot and monsters and dungeons, i.e. you might replay a section twice and find an entirely different layout and a monster with differing proportions that actually affect the gameplay in a big way. Again, what the hell are they going to show at TGS!?

Obviously Capcom is playing both sides of the coin, Deep Down makes a lot more sense as a PS4 exclusive while Dead Rising 3 makes a lot more sense as an XB1 exclusive. And to be honest, though we haven't seen much of Deep Down (methinks it will launch on Japan's PS4 release date) I think it looks a lot better than Dead Rising 3. Not that it really matters, mind.

Not really, it has been a difference of approaches more than anything else. Microsoft are going all out on the launch window - the only reason they are giving out FIFA 14 for free for Day One editions of the Xbox in Europe and Australia is because they are getting smashed in those markets (they wouldn't do it otherwise) - whereas Sony are being a bit more laid back. If it weren't for Microsoft's string of bad press for several months the tactic probably would have backfired on Sony.

As far as exclusives go, I don't see it. They seem pretty balanced against each other.

Just a bit of expansion on the free FIFA 14 thing, it is more likely that they are both being outsold and really want to get into two markets which have predominantly been Playstation oriented.

Some big (and importantly, confirmed) news has been coming out recently in regards to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, notably in regards to the games.
So first up, remember all those quotes from Microsoft about how the two systems had parity, with undisclosed developers saying otherwise?
Well it looks like we are starting to get an idea of an answer; note that it is still too early to say how this generation is going to go. However, when you tally up the hardware differences that do give the advantage to the Playstation 4, we really start to see just why people are up in arms.

Now, let us get to the crucial information that has been leaked in the past few days.
http://au.ign.com/articles/2013/10/30/call-of-duty-ghosts-is-native-1080p-on-ps4-upscaled-720p-on-xbox-one

Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin has confirmed that Call of Duty: Ghosts will run natively at 1080p on PlayStation 4, and is upscaled to 1080p from 720p on Xbox One. "We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both," Rubin said.

I'm not going to bother with the technical details here, and as for how it will actually look, it depends on your TV and your eyes - some won't notice the difference, but most will - but the PS4 is both having a better looking version of the game, and it has a higher/identical FPS. Upscaling 720p to 1080p might sound like it makes them identical visually, but as before with TV and eyes, you are likely to notice a lot more aliasing (jaggedness) and a blur effect with the upscaling. The big issue I have here, and it has been repeated by so many people (particularly on Neogaf), is how come a next-gen console can't even run a game as "meh" looking as Call of Duty: Ghosts at native 1080p? That is a pretty darn big issue for a next generation console.

Now, onto Battlefield 4.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-resolutiongate-the-fallout

While Digital Foundry has yet to see either next-gen version of Call of Duty, our experience with Battlefield 4 demonstrates that you can easily see the visual difference between them. The Xbox One version holds up well given the gulf in resolution, but it doesn't require a pixel counter to tell that the PS4 game is crisper and cleaner either. At last week's Battlefield 4 review event in Stockholm, we noted that the resolution change from one version to the next was obvious to many of the press in attendance, with some even suggesting on-site that the PS4 version was operating at native 1080p when its actual resolution was 1600x900. Battlefield 4 is a beautiful game generally, but if it has one Achilles' heel common to both next-gen platforms, it is the pixel-crawl and sub-pixel break-up derived from the post-AA technique. Xbox One has bigger pixels and fewer of them, so naturally the most obtrusive element of the presentation is more of an issue when displayed on the same screen.

It is important to note that it doesn't run at 1080p on either platform, so we'll get that out of the way. Now, Battlefield 4 is pretty much *the* multi-platform tech demonstration launch title for the next generation consoles. It is going to be the best looking launch game aside from probably Killzone: Shadow Fall. In that sense, this makes for a more important showcase of either platforms' specs than Call of Duty. The PS4, again, not only outputs over 50% (it is 58% specifically IIRC) more pixels - which makes for a very significant and easily noticeable difference to almost anyone - but it also has a higher average frame rate. Basically, the PS4 has the superior looking version but it also runs better. To me, this is just crazy.

Now again, don't take this to say "buy one or the other, yadda yadda". However, this question has been raised by many people now.
Why would you spend 50-100 dollars/euros/pounds/etc more on the Xbox One when it doesn't run games or make them look as good as its cheaper competitor, the Playstation 4, does?

It boggles my mind.
To add to this, look at the confirmed launch exclusives for each system. It's pretty obvious Shadow Fall is the top dog both technically and visually, but what is really important to note is that Ryse, the "visual showcase" game for the One, only runs at a native 900p. Ouch.

By the by, I guess this confirms why all the review copies of Battlefield 4 next-gen were for the PS4.....
And why almost every game demonstration of Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag has been for the PS4.....

I'm just shaking my head at the moment. I was expecting parity but it seems like the PS4 has noticeably superior hardware.....
But seriously....the worst part really is that the One can't even run CoD: Ghosts at 1080p....I mean, come on.

Here's a useful Neogaf thread for further confirmations on stuff;
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=680237
It is also interesting to note that we already know the resolution on PS4 for multi-platform games like Thief and Assassins Creed 4, but not on Xbox One.

As to why people are jumping up and down about it more than we did with multi-platform games on the PS3 and Xbox 360, the difference between multi-plats on those consoles tended to be a difference of 10-50p (there was also the PS3 having the better hardware but being more difficult to develop for). Now, we see a disparity of 180-360p between launch titles of two next gen consoles. That is a really bad sign from the start.

Just adding to this, it is old news now but Europe got a PS4 bundle that included an extra PS4 controller and Killzone Shadow Fall - I think it also included the new PS4 Camera but I can't confirm that - and all for the same price as the Xbox One. Suffice it to say but Sony seems to have much better ideas when it comes to value, especially when you compare the two with their free games initiatives.

Compare the Xbox 360's (http://majornelson.com/2013/10/31/games-with-gold-a-world-of-keflings-and-iron-brigade-free-in-november/) (A World of Keflings, Iron Brigade) to the Playstation brands' (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/31/playstation-plus-november-preview/) (Resogun and Contrast for PS4, Dragon's Dogma, Binary Domain and Ibb and Obb for PS3, Soul Sacrifice and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for Vita). Seriously, why are Microsoft even bothering? You only have to read the comments on that Major Nelsen post to see for yourself....

Hi guys. We were told by EA we couldn't cover the Xbox One version, but clearly that's not what was sent out to other media.

I've added a previously edited line back in to the review pointing out that the PS4 version, to our critic, looked vastly superior to Xbox One. Expect a more detailed comparison shortly.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/435559/battlefield-4-ps4-review-dice-shooter-is-a-slick-introduction-to-next-gen-multiplayer/

Oh dear.....
(If you can't be bothered reading the article, it is in regards to Battlefield 4)

EDIT: To show you just how laughable it is that Call of Duty: Ghosts is only 720p on the Xbox One, look at what happens to be 1080p at 60fps on the PS4 as well, while supporting 24 players to CoD's 18.....
For someone that was really considering getting both consoles, this is a kick in the teeth.

http://abload.de/img/untitled-1kxu07.gif

EDIT 2: Isn't it ironic that for the past seven years we've had so many articles from all the major gaming websites going on and on about how the 360 versions of multi-platform games were superior to the PS3's, but when the PS4 has clear advantages in all of the multi-platform games shown so far - the difference between 720p 60fps and 1080p 60fps is crazy big for CoD: Ghosts - the gaming media is jumping up and down about how "the differences are too small" or "it doesn't matter". Seriously? You can have a look for yourself and so far the only sensible one I've seen about the issue was from Eurogamer. The resolution gap does make a big difference. The best example of this is doing two benchmarks for a PC game. Rome 2 on low with 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution VS Rome 2 on medium with 1280x720 (720p), both at 60fps. You'll find the former looks better every time. But to the gaming media, apparently it isn't an issue any more because the shoe is on the other foot....

Not sure I understand?

As far as the hardware comparison, everyone knows the PS4 has far superior hardware now, as has been proven both by the specs and the multi-platform games. The GPU equivalents have been done for it and the Xbox One in regards to PCs, and the PS4 has something like a 50fps advantage in some games. Also the 8GB GDDR5 RAM as opposed to Microsoft's DDR3 and reliance on an eSRAM bottleneck pretty much seals the deal. It's going to be the case that, outside of a very bad port, the PS4 version of every multi-platform game will be superior. With HUMA support and so on for the PS4, the gap is likely only going to get bigger as this generation goes on, but we will see. Of course, that is the point of the console; you buy it for the games. The Xbox One is obviously more of a multi-media centre.

By the way....

Freeze it around the 26th second and you will see a PS4 controller, so if there is any doubt to this being some kind of PS4 Street Fighter reveal, you don't have far too look. I'm actually really wondering what it is now. Maybe it will show up at that launch event Gametrailers or Spike TV or whoever it was is doing. My tip is an Ultra Street Fighter IV port to PS4, but not the Xbox One - as is the case with the Game of the Year Edition for Injustice: Gods Among Us. It might even be Street Fighter 5, but I doubt it.

Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/welcome-to-the-amazon-playstation-network-store-1462747295) just leaked some absolutely massive news.

You read that headline right. We're very excited to introduce the Amazon Playstation Network Store, an alternate venue to purchase digital Playstation content for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita.

The downside of going all digital for the next-gen consoles was going to be restricting yourself to only one storefront for potential deals, but now that's not an issue. Sony already leaves its competitors in the dust when it comes to sales, especially with its Playstation Plus program, and adding Amazon's deal muscle to the mix increases the potential savings exponentially.

To celebrate the launch of the store, Amazon will be offering $5 PSN credit back on select digital purchases, and even better, customers who participate in the limited time buy two get one free promotion starting at noon ET today (Tuesday) will also get a bonus $5 PSN credit.

I don't think I even need to explain just how significant this is. At the moment, it is USA only though, but I expect that will change within the next 6 months.
Put it this way. Gaming forums all over are frothing at the mouth about this.

I'm very interested to see if Microsoft follow suit!

So, review round-ups!
If you ignore the aberration that is Polygon (extensive history of bias against Sony, panned by any serious gamer), the reviews are as follows;

PS4 - Great console, few great games. Good to hear considering consoles are always rather bare at launch*.
Killzone - Good game, not great, not bad. Very mixed opinions on what makes it good though.
Resogun - Great game.
Knack - Below average; bad to mediocre. The most disappointing launch game so far, which isn't entirely surprising.

We've had a few people start jumping up and down about the reviews......seriously. I've already seen a few say they are cancelling their pre-orders, and a few others laughing at the choice of console. When one actually looks at the scores though, this is fairly typical for a console launch, and that is before throwing in all the third party games both systems will be getting. Apparently Killzone having (currently) a 71 Metacritic score means that it is terrible, the series is crap (despite being mostly above 80 Metacritic score) and Guerrilla Games should be dropped from Sony. Yeah, not enough immaturity at all!

Personally, I'm surprised at how badly Knack is being reviewed. I expected a game with reviews mostly in the high 60s to low 70s, but it is getting some pretty low scores! I'm also surprised Shadow Fall isn't in the 80s, but.....eh. I've found that reviewers rarely match with most fans on shooters; just look at how most reviewers sing the praises of CoD year after year.....Resogun and the PS4 reviews don't surprise me though.

I'm not fussed at all. I didn't expect anything amazing from the launch, and given that Sony is still holding most of its' big guns in check - with inFamous and the Order in early to mid next year - I'm still quite happy I am getting this early. Throw in next-gen Battlefield, FIFA and a bunch of other games and I think most will be all set on either console regardless of the quality of the exclusives.

*Ok, the actual hardware reviews mentioned this, but it didn't affect their proper reviews. The idiots at Polygon, of course, decided to say that there were no great games in the pipeline for the PS4, and it affected their review. Yes. They let software into a hardware review. Besides, I think they must have forgotten about all the indie titles, inFamous, The Order, Driveclub, Destiny, Metal Gear Solid 5, etc....What's to bet the Microsoft-funded website gives glowing reviews to all their games and tech? Thankfully, no one in their right mind frequents Polygun unless they are looking for a laugh anyway.

Yep, agreed. I remember reading that....was it Game Informer?....preview that said Ryse was as fun as "punching numbers into a telephone". Eek.

The launch games for these two consoles overall is far better than we've had before. A range of exclusives on both sides - seems like a few bad, a few good - and then a whole bunch of AAA multi-platform games. That's why I think a lot of people won't mind the usual birthing pains as much with these two consoles as they used to.

Yep, indeed. That's why a lot of my posts in this thread have an intentional sarcastic tone. I've never understood the console wars and never will. I don't see nearly as many PC gamers blindly siding with either Nvidia or AMD for GPUs, mostly they just get whichever is better for them at the time.

We know what you meant :) Certainly though the PS3 had more high quality exclusives towards the end of both it and the 360s life cycle. Sony are very lucky they managed to pull that disaster back and relative sales parity with the 360.

Oh, and updated Metacritic scores for anyone interested;

Killzone - 74
Knack - 59
Resogun - 82
PS4 - Obviously no score, but Metacritic did a round-up and the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive (as you would expect). I expect similar reviews for the One in that the advantages may be different but both are great consoles.

I'm happy with those scores. Resogun always looked a great game, and Killzone looks to be a good show-case for the PS4 and a decent game besides. Disappointed with Knack, but at least the reviews actually point to it being a "try it" kind of game.

Oh right, I forgot to mention something. Remember that PS4 launch event that Geoff Keighley (https://twitter.com/geoffkeighley) is hosting? Now, there's some interesting stuff going on. Keighley himself has confirmed that there will be PS4 games announced at the event. Members of Epic Games (developers of Gears of War) have been tweeting and retweeting in regards to this event, plus hints by others of an "EPIC night". And just recently (I don't know how to embed Twitter so don't shoot me) Hideo Kojima (https://twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) confirmed there will be "shocking news" related to the PS4 at the event.

Now, we already know that Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is getting exclusive PS4 content. We know that Hideo himself is going to be at the show to show something, though whether it is some kind of game, new footage of the Phantom Pain, or just the exclusive DLC; we have no idea. However, the nature of his tweet suggests to me that he isn't teasing something he is involved with. I may be wrong though. However, whatever way you slice it, something big is going to be announced tomorrow. I don't follow Hideo so I don't know if him saying "shocking" could just be par for the course and mean DLC stuff or whatever, but to me, it sounds big. There have been rumours speculating that Epic are going to be moving Gears of War either multi-platform or exclusive to PS4 for a while now, ever since their publishing deal for Gears games expired (Judgement was the last game in that deal).

I personally don't have a clue as to what it is. "Shocking" to me doesn't imply exclusive DLC for a multi-platform game, nor is it for a new game - even from the likes of Naughty Dog. To me, it is something big hardware or software related - something along the lines of Gears becoming a Playstation game, or Sony announcing its' oft rumoured virtual reality device. Regardless, it seems like we are going to be getting some great stuff out of the show. In fact, Kojima's exact words are "will blow your mind". Ah, the excitement!

EDIT: Ok, we know so far that the Last of Us story DLC is going to be teased at the show, and new gameplay footage of Destiny will be shown. It is fair to say inFamous: Second Son and the Order are going to be shown as well, with the latter making its' official gameplay debut. Ugh. Why do I have to wait lol?

Ummm.....wow. I don't usually link to other forums, but you have to read the first post in this topic to believe it (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=715089). Understandably, that particular forum (and I am assuming many others) are blowing up deluxe. We have incompetence from Infinity Ward (but we already knew that with its' horrible optimization of Ghosts on all platforms). We have reviewers either lying about reviewing the PS4 game in 1080p, or unaware that they were actually reviewing the 720p version - which would imply then that Infinity Ward also lied.

This is an absolute farce and calls into question ALL of the comparisons done so far. Now, I don't really care as I likely wouldn't buy Ghosts anyway. I'm not too fussed about which version performs better as I will only have a PS4 anyway. But this is just ludicrous. How can Infinity Ward leak two different kinds of review copies to the press, and further, how can the press pass off some of their comparisons as factual and truthful when their videos were showing 720p footage that they claimed was 1080p footage? What a mess.

The gaming press has been taking a LOT of (probably deserved) flak lately, but this is just....ugh. Oh, and then we get someone talking about lighting differences in that first post who hasn't even played the game on any platform yet. Wow. Gaming press/Infinity Ward, I salute your incompetence. EDIT: Ah, looks like a lot of information was cut out of that post. Good.

Ok, so some clarifications. Infinity Ward told everyone that the review copies were in 1080p. However, people who paid attention to the comparison shots/videos noticed the PS4 version was actually being captured at 720p. And then you get tweets from IGN writers saying the game was in 1080p, even though their comparisons actually said otherwise. So who is the liar here?

It's not a bad idea! The gaming press is losing pretty much any credibility it had lately, and then you have developers like Infinity Ward and DICE making colossal mistakes (DICE's being releasing a broken Battlefield 4).
I just can't believe something like this could happen. It calls into question the validity of every last comparison or review between the next-gen consoles for CoD that has been published to date. I don't really care anymore who is to blame - either Infinity Ward or the gaming press - as this is just flat out ridiculous. This is just the icing on the cake that has been surrounding the consoles since E3 with so much bullcrap being posted by Sony/Microsoft, game developers and the press themselves all to flout their obvious agendas.

Speaking of gutter journalists, now I know why everyone hates Arthur Gies (the guy that wrote the Polygon review for Killzone: Shadow Fall). He's widely considered the most untrustworthy individual in the gaming press, and after reading about the crap he's done, I fully agree. Speaks volumes about Polygon that they would employ someone like that. Oh look, Gies didn't even try out the Killzone: Shadow Fall multiplayer for any decent length of time. Wow. What a fair and balanced review. Hell, if you are foolish enough to give them a click, you can even listen to one of them (during a livestream of Killzone) start screaming "WHERE IS THE COMBAT" 5 minutes into the video.....

Oh, right, let's add these little gems in. Seriously. What the f**k is wrong with these people!?

"If you're like, a 1080p person and care about minimal differences no one can really notice, get the PS4 version."

"This isn't an apocalyptic game, why does it look like an apocalyptic game!?"

"BF4 certainly looks good" "Looks really good on Xbox One too"

Yep, indeed. That's why a lot of my posts in this thread have an intentional sarcastic tone. I've never understood the console wars and never will. I don't see nearly as many PC gamers blindly siding with either Nvidia or AMD for GPUs, mostly they just get whichever is better for them at the time.

Yep, last time I built the SO a PC it was a AMD based machine, 'cause the processors were better at the time.
When I did mine I used an i5 as the intel processors are currently better, and same with the GPUs got a Nvidia this time round as it's less power hungry than the AMD equivalent...

I don't need reviews or industry. I want a PS4 for the following reasons...

1. X Box One is, theoretically a weaker machine hardware wise.
2. X Box One is £70 more expensive
3. That extra expense includes a Kinect, a device which demands I use 'jazz hands' to control games.
4. Kinect is no longer compulsory, and I wouldn't want to use it. So why make me pay for it? Not as if it will have a trade in value either, as got X Box One, got Kinect (whether you wants it or not)
5. 360's Red Ring of Death farce. I just don't trust 'em!

The launch event has come and is still going, but the announcements have all been made. Quick recap;

* UNCHARTED for PS4 confirmed! Biggest news of the night by far.
* inFamous: Second Son release date is the 21st of March 2014.
* Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes has an exclusive PS4 only mission where you play one of the classic Metal Gear Solid missions.
* Destiny has its beta released first on PS3 and PS4 (this is to add on the PS3/PS4 exclusive DLC).
* Towerfall, previously an Ouya exclusive, is now coming to PS4 (and PC) and with PS4-exclusive DLC.
* The Last of Us Story DLC concerns Ellie and her friend before the main events of The Last of Us.

Also, it's not really an announcement, but Shuhei Yoshida was asked a few questions about The Last Guardian. He simply said; "it's pretty", "I picked up a controller", and he laughed and said "I don't remember" when pressed about whether it was a PS3 or PS4 controller. So basically.......The Last Guardian confirmed for PS4.

Crikey lawks-a-Lordy o'blimey.

PS4 has sold 1,000,000 units in it's first day on sale.

In terms of pure numbers, this is far and away the most successful console launch ever.

But do bear in mind that this lacks the context of the considerably larger gaming market, which continues to grow.

Very interested to see the XBone launch figures for comparrison.

I don't think the xbox is going to "struggle" in comparison to the PS4, but despite microsofts 180 on the internet features of the One I still think the PS4 could be the console to beat. The PS4s sales figures are impressive when you factor in the economic climate. I expect this time next year we will see prices drop on these machines, by about 20% that's my prediction.

Mr Mystery
11-17-2013, 11:20 AM
It's hard to tell. The units sold is an insane amount compared to all other launches, as in over triple of what the 360 and PS3 sold in their first couple of weeks.

Even allowing for the ever growing market, it's still a truly startling figure.

Only contemporary sales figure would be GTAV.

pretty incredible isn't it. Microsoft have spent an awful lot of time on damage control following their E3 announcement and are obviously still worried. I had to do a big load of Microsoft created tests for working at Game to get ready for the Xbox One launch, and a lot of the questions were about the fact that they no longer need to be online all the time, don't need kinect etc. this close to launch the fact that they are still emphasising that suggests a lot of people still don't know. certainly we still get a lot of customers coming in saying they wont buy one because of all the E3 info that came out, unaware of the u turn Microsoft made. the CEO of Ubisoft thinks the PS4 will be the bigger console too.

I enjoyed it, the second one really was the best one of the 3 but, number 3 wasn't too bad. But then I'm a "big" fan. I even got the exclusive controller and the ltd edition one with all the extras. I enjoyed the original Fable, but by the time 2 came out RPGs had moved on so much, 2 and 3 just looked ridiculously basic and silly. As for other exclusives, never been a Dead Rising fan, Ryse isn't getting many positive opinions at the moment, not a Forza fan. Compared to being a huge Killzone and inFamous, and Uncharted fan, so it has to be PS4 for me.

Actually, post 2009 the PS3 had by far the better exclusive roster, and still does so to this day.

As far as Fable goes, I'm a big fan. Fable: The Lost Chapters was the best of the bunch. I never really got into Fable 2, just didn't interest me as much. Fable 3 was terrible. I enjoyed it somewhat, but it was still a bad game.

As far as the sales debate goes, people need to remember that the PS4 sold 1 million in North America alone in 24 hours. North America is traditionally where the PS brand doesn't have market dominance, at least over the past generation.
What is really going to be interesting is launch day/week in Europe....if we are seeing these kinds of numbers in North America, I can't even hazard a guess as to what we will see there.

By the by, don't be surprised if the Xbox One has higher worldwide launch day sales; it is launching in 13 countries simultaneously after all, as opposed to the PS4's two on launch day. I don't think the One is going to beat one million sales in 24 hours from one country, but it is likely it will beat that figure in worldwide sales within 24 hours.

Regardless, 1 million units sold in 24 hours makes the PS4 the best selling console at launch ever. Absolutely stupendous numbers.

It is possible it was an out of box failure. I heard Sony had quite a few of those on launch day. So much that even my Dad knew of it and he's 63 and doesn't play video games.

As far as the controller and cords, you can pretty clearly see them (albeit briefly) in the lower right hand corner near the end of the video. Right around the 52 second mark.

As far as a publicity stunt... I guess it's true that any publicity is good publicity but I'd imagine that there was already plenty of hype given that most stores sold out of their preorders within a matter of days, if not hours. What need is there to publicize anything at that point?

Mr Mystery

It's got us discussing the product...

As apparently, the not working ones are less than 1% of those sold. And to be honest, that's pretty good on launch, as sadly it's likely nigh on possible to ensure stock levels are met without some failures in quality control.

did that awesome video really need electronic dubstep?

I meant a factory failure really, so it'd failed what ever tests they do on build.

if the failure rate is the quoted 4 in 1000 its not that high on new equipment.
In comparison a new line of equipment I used to install had a 50% out of box failure rate at launch. obviously there wasn't a million of those sold in a weekend but still...

Yeah the whole failure rate thing was massively blown out of proportion, probably by people who either don't realize the average fail rate for new hardware is around 4% or that were frightened their own PS4 would screw up. A lot of idiots on IGN for example were raving about how it was the new "red ring of death", just goes to show how moronic the "fanboys" are.

Hardly indicative of anything. I know a whole bunch of other people that don't know anyone with broken consoles.
The fact of the matter is they've said they have had 1% confirmed failures out of over a million.
Even if that number is slightly higher, being at 4% or lower is expected for any hardware launch and thus the people blowing up about it in the media are morons.

I got mine about 15 hours ago alongside Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition :D

First impressions:

1) The system loads unbelievably quickly. A cold boot (power off, then turn on) load-up to the menu screen takes about 15 seconds for me, if that. I was amazed when it popped up after one minute of "installing" that I could play Injustice, that "play-as-you-install/download" feature is awesome.
2) The controller is simply top notch. Too early to say, but this is very much a close competitor for best controller ever next to the 360 controller. Just pure class.
3) The UI is nice and simple, not a bloated or disorganized mess like my 360 and PS3 devolved into.
4) The Wifi chip is far better than the PS3's, usually I was lucky to go above 500kbs (slow Aussie internet :( ) on the PS3, now I regularly get 1mbs!
5) Injustice and Warframe are the only games I have so far, and both are top notch, even if neither is really a graphical showcase.
6) Despite what I read online, it is a perfectly fine blu-ray player. My PS3 had 'lag' issues that would take me about 5 minutes to adjust to, the PS4 however had no such problems. I'm guessing those sites were more referring to number of features than anything else.

This entire, long day has been simply incredible, I am so impressed with the PS4 and it is less than a week until post-Christmas shopping where I can grab another game or two. FIFA 14 is definitely my next purchase to spice it up (I already have a shooter and a fighter) so that I have three games with incredible longevity, with either Battlefield 4 or Killzone: Shadow Fall to follow afterwards.

Just an FYI, that I was so impressed with the console when I only have a F2P game with a small crowd and a cross-gen game is an incredible sign. I can't imagine what games like Watch Dogs or inFamous Second Son are going to be like!

I know I mentioned it earlier, but seriously, the PS4 is super-duper fast, like The Flash quick. It's ridiculous.

Injustice really is a great fighter, even if it is really a PS3/360 game, I just happened to be late to the party and I've wanted the game since it was first announced. Very much like an expanded Mortal Kombat game where there are no similar characters, each of them fights very uniquely. Also, though there is no variety in the 'finisher' moves, they are all so epic that it doesn't matter. Watching Superman upper-cut someone into orbit then smash them back down never gets old, even after doing it at least thirty times already. On that note, having both Zod and Superman in the game and able to select their respective Man of Steel skins gives me the shakes.

Warframe really surprised me. I initially thought I was unable to play it solo, but thankfully you can - it is just a bit slower, and harder to boot. It is a pretty simple game at its core, but it doesn't explain much of anything which can get rather frustrating. Still, for a free to play MMO, it is well above what I expected. The gameplay is super slick, the mission system is a nice change of pace - no grinding, woo! - and it is all very well presented. Start up, do the tutorial, create your character, play the game. Jump in and do the next mission. Simple stuff. It is nothing special but it is pretty fun.

I've tried out the FIFA 14 demo and I can honestly say it looks better than the earlier gameplay footage I saw. It isn't a major upgrade on the previous gen though, which sucks. At least the player models all looks mostly like what they should - it took them four seasons to get Sandro right for Spurs for example - and the 3D model crowds look far better. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it again doesn't feel much different from last I played a FIFA game - 12 - but it is definitely a refinement. It's a good thing I avoided 13 then, but I may just wait for FIFA 15. I'll decide soon enough I guess.

I'm having a ball overall. The only issue I have encountered so far is that one of the thumb sticks on my DS4 is getting a slight amount of tearing, but from what I have seen only over-use will do that, hence why I am taking a break. I can't wait to get Battlefield 4 and either Killzone: Shadow Fall or FIFA 14 on Christmas Day!

I'm going to quickly debunk the "PS4 Overheat" crap...

The other day I was playing with my PS4 on and off for most of the day, including at least one period where I was playing for four hours straight during a 40 degree Celsius/104 degree Fahrenheit day. My PS4 never once had any issues, and when I went to turn it off and touched the case to feel how hot it was, it was only warm, not hot. This was in stark contrast to my PS3 and 360 even during regular warm days (say 28 degrees Celsius/82.4 degrees Fahrenheit) where both would get extremely hot after extended use.

This leads me to believe that those who had a rare over-heat with their PS4 either;

a) Put their PS4 in an enclosed space without proper ventilation, or
b) Had an actual hardware issue, such as a fan getting disjointed or whatever.

It just goes to show how incredibly well designed the console is, especially as it doesn't even use an external power brick.

I want to get Fifa 14, I am quite partial to a football game, though the last one I played seriously was International Superstar Soccer on the SNES >.> I have been playing a bit of Fifa 13 and enjoying it. the staff in store have a pro club on the go together which I will join when I get a copy, so all of us can be on the same team online which would be fun. Injustice looks kind of interesting but fighters these days are too complicated for me :p

we have had about 15 Xbox Ones returned now, and still no PS4s. the analogue stick rubber covers do seem to be an issue though, we have had a couple of people come in with torn covers. they are sending the controllers back to Sony though and have been promised a replacement apparently, with Sony calling it a bad batch of rubber, which is entirely possible.

I'd recommend FIFA 14, if you have a favourite team or two, playing as their manager in the Career mode is great and will soak up so many hours. The best part of the Career Mode though is definitely taking a bottom team (i.e. an English League 2 team) and taking them to Premier League/top division glory. Not really possible with some leagues, i.e. the A-League. However, the beauty of it is that you can always move to another club if your current club does well enough, and it keeps going on and on. It is endless!

I'm surprised about the returned Xbox Ones. Hardware failures? I can't see anyone willfully returning next-gen consoles considering it is darn near impossible to find them at the moment, although then again, that might just be down under lol.
That's good to hear about the controllers, if it is just a bad batch of rubber then I might send mine in if it gets really bad, because by that time I will definitely have a second controller.

Looks like I am getting Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield 4 and FIFA14 for Christmas :D Going to go from 1 owned PS4 game to 4! I'll be picking at least one of them up tomorrow but I of course can't play them until Christmas Day :(

returned faulty yes, all sorts of problems with power, kinect not connecting, disc drive failures, seems like Microsoft rushed the console out.

Well, there are similar stories that some people have reported where a bunch of PS4s have been returned at their local shops due to hardware issues, and much fewer Xbox Ones. It seems safe to say though that both have very low hardware fail rates.

XBones seem fairly easy to come by from what I'm seeing.

Local stores have them, and HMV Canary Wharf had at least 12 going on what I saw on their shop floor on Thursday. Being near to people's Christmas pay day, and Canary Wharf being essentially built upon scads and scads of the cashmonies, I do wonder if the console is as popular as MS are claiming.

Had my first proper go on a PS4 today. Bout half an hour on assassin's pirate creed. fun enough, doesn't feel any different to a PS3, but it is prettier.

Think thats going to be problem for at least a year or two for games to not just be ports and be built to the console.

Yeah, I would imagine so. But the near identical control pad adds to that feeling...

that isn't automatically a bad thing though, a new console doesn't have to be a huge ground breaking event. a new console comes along and people expect it to do something different, yet all PCs ever do is get more powerful, and nobody thinks to question that. nobody says hey we have a new graphics card here, all it does it make things look prettier than they used to, what is up with that?

Yean, but that's because the new GPU hype isn't anywhere near the media circus you get at a console launch.
Both Nvidia and Amd do the Our most powerfull card ever on an annual or bi-annual basis so it's not really a shock...

exactly, nobody expects new things, yet consoles should apparently revolutionise stuff just because. I am perfectly happy with a PS4 that is simply more powerful than a PS3.

You're getting it back to front though, it's the console manufacturers that claim it'll revolutionise gaming every time they release something.

It doesn't.

I've heard moms lament "my kids just want the newest, latest, and greatest", and I just shake my head and think "no, kids want to be able to keep playing the awesome games that didn't exist a year ago, and you can't do that with the old console". You don't buy movie tickets once and then expect to never want to see another movie again.

a couple of mothers in store the other day were complaining about how their kids always want more games and I thought, how does that differ to any other hobby? nobody buys one book and stop there, or one film, paint pot, ball of wool, whatever else it may be.

So I got Killzone: Shadow Fall and FIFA 14 on Christmas Day, and I have enough Christmas money to go and grab Battlefield 4 on PS4 tomorrow (and put a $40 voucher down for the new Tyranid codex :D). Some quick impressions on those two games I got; Killzone is downright amazing. A bit of control annoyance in one or two sections, and some objectives not being clear, but otherwise a really great game so far. Easily the best looking game I have ever played, I even had my brother (who plays games like Metro) lying down watching me play for several hours in sheer awe. That is pretty much a dead give-away about how much of a technical achievement the game is. FIFA is a different story, it looks like a decent upgrade on the last-gen versions but it really doesn't look too different. Pretty good so far, but I'm not really sure it is an upgrade on 12 (the last FIFA I played). I don't really like the new transfer system, but I'm growing on it.

Battlefield 4 is really good, but the campaign is only around four or five hours long, I completed it in a day which was disappointing. Fifa 14 the mighty Brentford are top of the league, and have also beaten Manchester United and Everton in the capital one cup. really enjoying Killzone, Need for Speed Rivals looks incredible, and sounds great, but the police radio chatter is killing it at the moment. it is endless, complete with static buzz, and clicking on and off every few seconds. it doesn't stop either, even during video sequences.

Yeah, Battlefield is great, as is Killzone. Aside from the free fall sections, some out of place difficulty spikes and one or two sections having repetitive "unique" enemies, Shadow Fall is a really good game. I don't really get the low 7s average score. The game I'm playing most at the moment by far is FIFA 14 though, the visuals are barely an improvement on previous gen but it is still FIFA, so the visuals don't really bother me.

been playing loads of Fifa 14, just finished my first season as the magnificent Brentford. I won the league by 20 points, won the Capital One Cup, won the Paint Trophy, and won the FA Cup. my league one team beat Man Utd twice, Man City twice, Fulham, Everton, Liverpool, and Newcastle. We kick arse. my player is now valued at over four million, and is playing for England in the World Cup. Going to play something else for a while now, take a break.
