Hello all,

so I finally got my dex and most of my boxes in, immediately built a crimson hunter as one of my two jets and am now considering... to wraithfighter, or not to wraithfighter. How many of you all have used the unit yet? I think its a nice enough looking model, but it seems to me a bit thin armored given the proximity you need to the target to get it to be effective. Have you all any suggestions, expeirences, stories, or musings on the unit as of yet?

Short answer No

Long answer Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Crap armour, crap guns, and overpriced. Should have been cheaper, better evade roll and the guns should have been torrent templates not blasts.

or alternatively, it should have been able to cast its power the turn it flies in... that would probably not have made it good, but certainly a fun tool (that still dies way too easy to Quad Guns etc...)
As it is, I'd have to agree:

No. Just No.

The only truly crappy unit in the codex in my opinion - shees are at least a fast and cheap counter assault unit... not good, maybe not even really decent, but also not utterly worthless...

Also as the psychic power only removes fearless, the only armies I see this being a threat to are orks but even without fearless they would still be LD 10, deamons but I don't know their leadership, and Tyranids this is only really useful for pinning or melee because as soon as the power wears off they are fearless again (most likely).

Meanwhile about half the armies will laugh at you with their ATSKNF

It's got quite a few flaws when compared with a Crimson Hunter. It's got three weapon systems going on - its heavy D-scythes, which by being blast rather than template contrive to be less effective than their smaller infantry counterparts since it hits less area and doesn't ignore cover, although I suppose the mobility of a flyer combined with the range mean its easier to fire them off (assuming of course you don't get shot down first). Second it has its terrify power, which if combined with warlocks/spiritseers casting horrify might be effective in limited circumstances (and as already pointed out those circumstance become even more limited if facing an army with plenty of ATSKNF). Finally there's the mind shock pod, which cause all morale tests to be rerolled within a foot of it . Perhaps more useful in a wraith heavy army where your own troops have fearless so aren't as affected as much, but when combined with horrify and terrify on your enemies can by quite good at psychological warfare.

In short you have to put an awful lot into place to get it to work to its full potential, but you'll probably have an easier and more rewarding time with a second CH.

I'm gonna make a non exarch CH. I already made the exarch (fun to make, gotta say) but I'm going to keep it as an anti-air/tank flier with the bright lances.

Has anyone seen a purpose to change the bright lances to the star cannons at all? I cannot see a valid reason.

Only place I could see Starcannons being a plus would be on the Exarch if you're expecting Death Star-type units from your opponent- 6 shots of AP 2, with Precision on 5+ to pick out and remove dangerous specialists. Other than that, can't really see using 'em.

Do yourself a favor and save the $60 on the CH and just go here:

Well... I already got two of the CH boxes, so the whole changing over isn't going to work, and don't you mean spend an extra $44 plus shipping, exchange nonsense and 5% upcharge fee from FW for a nightwing? I mean not for nothing, but short of making them in the US or dropping the price by 40% I'm unwilling to hop on that boat. LoL.

I think that you'll find game-wise, that the nightwing is worth every penny and point you pay for it. While the CH is a "one and done" type of unit that is nice but really cannot hold a candle to the NW in terms of overall performance.

How massive is the size difference between a Crimson Hunter and a Nightwing? Could you model 2 + 2 guns on the CH and field it as the other?

the size is about the same. The NW is a bit larger but not by any noticeable difference.

why not just proxy the CH as a Nightwing if they are similar size?

May just do that although honestly, given my meta, I think I'd enjoy the wraithfighter to an extent. I am probably going to just build one each, leave the weapons magnetized and change as i need it, as I already have the exarch crimson hunter done, glued, and based.

Has anyone somehting GOOD to say about wraithfightin' in the USA?

It sounds like almost no one has used a WF in games yet. I certainly haven't.

Ah screw it, I'm making one, and I'm going to use it just to spite you all if I manage to off a whole guard gunline with it! Huzzah!

I have faced one before. It played around in my backlines for the moment it came in, terrifying anything and everything it could while Nightspinners rained templates on the terrified units. Way I see it, it's not direct combat it's support. If my opponent hadn't blown away my Quad first turn things might have been different but oh well.

On that note, Wave Serpents are amazing at picking off Quad's and Icarus'.
