New army, khorne daemons with lots of monstrous creatures

Skarbrand

Lots of bits went into this one, I've bought an entire army of conversion parts for him which will all get re-used later on other models.

Tried to get it closer to the art with a flatter face , double horms, single bladed axes, lots of hair etc.

Skarbrand doesn't have any wings, other than that nice conversions.

Oooo, liking these Monstrous Creatures, and the Hound's looking good too. What does the Pistol on the 'crusher represent, tho?

Skarbrand doesn't have any wings, other than that nice conversions. Not rules-wise, but the fluff mentions that he has torn, useless wings which were broken when Khorne exiled him, so the model's appropriate.

isotope99
06-26-2013, 03:02 AM
Yes, the wings are supposed to be torn and atrophied so the skinny zombie dragon ones worked quite well.

I'm not committed on the bloodcrusher riders yet but want to use those DV chosen models somewhere. I'm also thinking of doing Angron as skulltaker on juggernaut so want a squad to go with him.

The plasma pistol will either be replaced or represent the champion's AP2 weapon

You Sir are a relentless hobby machine! How are the rest of us supposed to keep up when you are churning out all these armies so quick.

I wouldn't mind so much if they were a bit poo, but each model has tons of detail and modelling, nothing seems to be completely stock, even if it's a fancy base!

No doubt they'll all be painted by the weekend so you can play in a Tournament at Warhammer World!

how much to get you to make me the one on the throne? (I'm being fairly serious here (as much as a suger/oil hypo man can be over one epic model)

Really great work. All of them are coming out great, with Skarbrand being a spectacular centerpiece. What is the Khornate symbol that makes the backing of the throne from? I don't think I've seen it before.

isotope99
06-26-2013, 11:28 AM
Forgeworld used to make these resin symbols. I cut out the big grinning face at the botttom and kept the rest in case it was useful.

Sadly they are now discontinued, probably due to poor profit margins as they used to be cheap by forgeworld standards.

That's amazing, I recall an article, maybe on BoLS or From the Warp ages ago that was discussing the way things were being painted and how the 'eavy metal way of doing things had started to be replicated across the board with some many armies ending up looking the same. I specifically referred to painting things in a style, that it would be a brave individual who brought out a Sin City style army, all monochrome with extreme highlights etc. The referenced another painterly style but as I think about it now I think you've achieved what they were getting at. I hope you can replicate the same effect across the entire army, I absolutely love it. Could you imagine if they were all lit from the same side and positioned you could recreate one of those old battle paintings, y'know the sort GW uses for inspiration themselves

Here are some more khorne doggies, I was in Warhammer world and picked up some heresy marines. My centrepiece is going to be an an'grathh versus sanguinius piece (see the cover of fear to tread) so a bit of heresy stuff fits.

Bits used:

Soul grinder: Armour plates, claws, lower legs
Forgefiend: Ectoplasm cannon barrels for upper legs, knees from maulerfiend arms, maulerfiend claw, cables
Heldrake: Wings
Valkyrie: engine intake/outflow
Chariot of tzeentch: Fire for OSL painting
Bloodletters: Icon
Various skulls and old icons
Everything else is from the lord of skulls torso an dtanks leaving the treads for some future project perhaps.

I've gone deaf from the sweet guitar solo seeing that model played in my head. The rock, it was so hard.

Me not Weedy
07-19-2013, 10:06 AM
The legs still look a little weedy/short. And the feet don't really match up with the rest of the aesthetics of the rest of the model.

I think that instead of just using other model bits and using p-card you could achieve better results. But then again, my critiques could be because of the limited number of pictures.

Other than those two issues I think it's a great model.

Result of the tiered armour, the actual leg is a bit lower.

Here is the missing quad gun from the defence line. Gun is obviously too low but the top of the ammo pack is about the right height.

If I'm honest I wasn't stuck on the 'Bloodthirster', don't get me wrong the execution and technical achievement was immense it just didn't push my buttons.

The paint job though, oh my, that's just brought the whole thing together. And I love the elements that have no paint whatsoever, how difficult is it to refrain from just putting some grey highlight on those black bits? That's a whole level of restraint right there - a clear sign of someone with the confidence to know 'when to stop'.

Wow, that thing really does look like it's on fire inside!

I really love the Bloodthirster. Have you considered using a crackle-effect spray on some of the black areas for texture? It may not be the look you are going for on these models, but I've had a can waiting around that I wanted to use on *something* to make it look charred.

That Bloodthirster (especially the paintjob) is amazing. One question I have though is that going to be his final base? The fact that neither of his feet actually fit on said base makes the whole pose from the waste down look REALLY akward. If you custom made an appropriately large base this thing would be beyond off the charts :) . You could do something like this:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y7pZy-hzGk8/UCqdhzdT_wI/AAAAAAAAA1I/JhFztuDec-M/s1600/Stalker+Front_Reshoot.JPG

That is a base I made for my Triarch stalker using a CD and plasti-card. Turned out really well.

isotope99
07-24-2013, 02:28 PM
I may do a scenic base eventually as a doughnut base like my assassins so that I can slot it in, but not a priority right now. The 'tiny' base is a product of wanting to use it as a bloodthirster and GW's older greater daemon designs (I reckon a new model would be on the big oval dreadknight style)

My attempt at NMM

Very well modelled. Going to be a pig discussing line of LoS for games etc.

isotope99

Potentially, but there's a clear default that it doesn't block LOS (except for swarms) and gives a 4+ cover save, with the new 25% test it's going to be rare that any different results would come up and I have a few spare actual defense line pieces to swap in in case of tight calls.

The hounds are forge world hounds of xaphan. A bit too expensive so I'm going to fill them out with regular plastic warhounds.

I will eventually get round to doing some troops

Looking good, should look nice and horde-y on the tabletop, doubled up on the bases like that. A minor thing, but having the doubledogs on the bikes running in opposite directions lessens the feel of movement a bit. And agreed, that Valkyria would look great as a Bloodletter champion! That's not to say you have any but for someone who likes modelling but isn't great at it and can manage the paint job, which is where the idea may fal down as it's probably really difficult, they could get away with an awful lot.

Oh yeah, this dude, he's on post one and we all forgot about him. I've just realised something really ingenious about this paint scheme, you can hide a multitude of scratch-building sins in the shadows and highlights. That's not to say you have any but for someone who likes modelling but isn't great at it and can manage the paint job, which is where the idea may fal down as it's probably really difficult, they could get away with an awful lot.

Amazing work.

There are a fair few. the challenge with one off conversions is that you can't really tell if its working until you get the major bits on and then you have trouble getting the detailing right. The head on skarbrand went through several iterations for example before I settled on this version.

The painting isn't as hard as it looks (which is one reason i like it) first step is to do lighting tests with an LED torch after priming.

http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/photopost/data/581/DSC01186.JPG

It's then a blend up through the following colours using a lot of semi-drybrushing:

Black
Rhinox hide (dark brown)
Khorne red
Doombull brown (a dark reddish brown)
Skrag Brown (an orangey brown)
Golden yellow (now Yriel yellow I think)

Finally a Reikland flesh wash and a yellow+red watered down glaze

Key is to use only a little of the primary colours and use mostly the browns, the primary colours are then saved for the light sources.

I think the final product captures the spirit of the art quite well if not every detail.

This Soul Grinder was easier to imagine than translate into a real model. I wanted a brass scorpion clambering over wreckage including a Rhino melting into lava but I was awkward to position the legs even with the large soul grinder base so I settled for arcane ruins pillars in places.

It's a mix of the helldrake body and neck, forgefiend weapons, lots of defiler claws that I have accumulated over the years, leftover zombie dragon bits and various other parts, including the skull chucker gun from the lord of sjulls to represent the phlegm upgrade.

The smaller the model, the tougher it is to get the gradation between light and shadow, this maybe needs a final sharp highlight

I recently stripped a load of my first models, including taking apart a few conversions! At the time I was so proud, even just little things like re-posing the leg of the old old SM Terminators. Compared to my stuff now, they were atrocious. With years of practice though, I have a Scrap Daemon statuette on my shelf and I'd like to think a few of my models can stand up to isotope's stuff without looking too shabby. Just got to keep having a go, not worry too much if you make mistakes, so long as you learn from them, and use stuff like these models for inspiration to keep driving onwards.

Speaking of which, great work Iso. The herald and Scorpion look amazing on those black backgrounds.

I like the army but the OSL is just horrible. Before you get all jumpy, let me explain. The painting is done very well, no complaints there. The whole point of OSL is to make it appear as though the light sources are casting a hue/glow onto the surrounding surfaces. Looking at your models, the OSL is not convincing at all because you have light on surfaces where there shouldn't be or surfaces that are literally right next to the light source yet have no glow at all? Love the army, I really do but I think your light theory could use some work..

To put it politely, HOLY POO is that an amazing finished diorama(?)!!!

I was looking at the WIP pics only this morning in awe and then you go and drop the finished photos. I tip my hat, sir.

I am loving the job you are doing. Where did you get the head for your last bloodthirster, is it still available for purchase?

Very impressive matey, I really enjoy the individuality and how unique all your models are. Impressive paint job too. Very fire and brimstone.

I look forward to seeing how you tackle Ultramarines next.

I'll bite...
The base of the model (including the head) is Forge Worlds "incarnate elemental of fire" from the warhammer forge range. I'm loving it here too.
