The Khornepocalypse

I like Apocalypse - a lot. Seeing the new Lord of Battles / Deathdealer kit finally got me to do something I've always wanted to do: build a Daemon Engine army in service to the mighty Blood God. I've always liked the various engines since the days of Epic, and love titans, so it's a natural fit. It also means that I can focus on making lots of individual units but still have a (kinda) fieldable army.

First up to be finished is this Defilery thing:

According to my random name generator (http://collegiatitanica.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/khornate-name-generator-of-doom.html) it is now called Flesh Obliterator. It will eventually be crewed by a member of Raging Heroes Toughest Girls (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/loudnraging/raging-heroes-the-toughest-girls-of-the-galaxy) (probably Jaheda, with Ash riding in something with more claws / buzzsaws), as all foot soldiers of this army shall be.

Oh well, at least I've got plenty of Autocannons now.

"Defilery Thing" could work, but given I plan on building four or five of them it might not be descriptive enough.

DL - Indeed, I theoretically like Orks, but painting them is my bane, so I've gotten / getting rid of my unused greenskins so they're not clogging up the place. Not sure if I should go black or more a burgandy for the base colour though.

Lighting something of that size shouldn't be difficult. The biggest problem when lighting models is where to hide batteries, but you have plenty of room for that. I would recommend putting some LEDs in the bottom of the tower, and then using some card in there, maybe sprayed with a chrome spray, to diffuse the light.

Indeed - the tricky part is making it so that the lighting is even the height of the tower and that it can easily be accessed. I'm actually thinking of using fake tea lights, one at the base and one attached to the underside of the tower roof, and having the roof lift off.
Then it's just a matter of figuring out the order in which to paint and assemble it all for maximum bloodletting. And waiting for the approx 400 skulls I've ordered to show up in the post...

I'm not sure what to name this one. I was thinking Desecration of Hope, but it's not stabby enough. Something with Annihilation, Obliteration or the like in it maybe? Fast, brutal but with a sense of grandeur and giganticness to it.

Thanks Soton! :) worst part is trying to keep at least a core of symmetry to it. Going to be... interesting on the larger plates. Oh, and I've decided to go with Devourer of Hope as the name in the end. At least for now, may change my back mind later. But you will still be honoured, mwahahahaha!

I was tempted to give it little chainsaw mouth pieces using the sentinel kit, but it was a bit OTT even for this (and I only had one spare anyway...).

As for the hows, I started with a vague idea in my head of what I wanted it to look like (eg a skull) and sketched out with a thin white coat on one side the layout for the skull, then drew a bunch of the cardinal lines around it followed by the finer detail and embelishment lines. I then mirror the skull and cardinal lines, adding unique embellishments as I go. This gives it an almost but not quite symmetrical look, which I feel adds to the impact.
The white lines are cleaned up and any errors corrected, then given a drybrush in Blazing orange. This is the source of the glow effect as well as a base colour. After that I use Golden Yellow. On the larger panels I did some spot drybrushing on the larger intersections of several lines, but they all had areas overpainted with yellow. I then overpaint with white as the final highlight.
Last step is to get the orange again and go over any non white or yellow lines, blend in the highlights if needed (they can be too stark if not careful), and then add in a few more embellishment lines in straight orange. For this I used various thicknesses of paint so some are quite visible but others are fairly faint and ghostly. My first test panel had and orange ink wash, but I felt it muted the highlights too much, and adding the gloss coat deepens the shadows so it was unnecessary.
