On the subject, yes, I would much rather believe Major Nelson than other stuff that has been written. He might be a company man but he came right out and said what everyone was thinking about The Last of Us, and in that sense, I respect him. Again, yeah, he also happens to be the Xbox head dude, so....yeah lol.

I've seen unconfirmed rumours on the way the sharing on One works, and I don't believe them for a second. Still, Microsoft really need to get off their butts and start confirming stuff.

Its disappointing that the games aren't cheaper. But 360 games were 50 at launch, not the 35-40 we see now....so maybe they might get cheaper *pipe dream*

It would certainly strengthen their case, for sure. I just don't think they have what it takes to convince most that they are the top gaming destination, unfortunately. I just don't see another tight console race between Sony and Microsoft this generation, I really don't, but let's hope I am wrong as I don't want to see the Xbox go the way of the dodo.

the new xbox 360 extra slim, the 'E' is not really any slimmer than the current model, is the same price, and has no optical socket or component cable. going to have to check the hardware on the next gen consoles, I do my surround sound through optical. I would suspect the Xbox One will just be HDMI and this is microsoft weaning people on to it.

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Go right ahead. :) It's already become a meme in itself, I think me and everyone else had the same idea simultaneously. It is good to see Microsoft changing it's tune even if people still seem to be won over by Sony.

yeah, I have a 360 and a PS3, I can now see myself getting a OneEighty and a PS4. will definitely be PS4 for launch though, the launch titles appeal to me much more. plus I still think the OneEighty will have to come down in price fairly quickly.

So now I'm back on the fence, will most likely end up with both, but that Microsoft announcement may have swung it for me. Wasn't bothered about the "always on" recording my every movement crap, but the sharing games and playing off-line issues did bother me. Price point and availability are my only concerns now.

Good on them. To be entirely fair though, if they really had consumers' interests at heart, they wouldn't have tried to implement those policies in the first place. That it took an unabashed thrashing from both Sony and the consumers for them to change indicates that it is a move to save what was a console on life support rather than to satisfy the masses. They've probably won back a fair share of gamers globally - particularly in the USA - but from what I can see most are still sticking with Sony.

Personally, I'm still going with the PS4; just seems to be the better long term investment (all the exclusive games that have yet to be announced), plus the launch games appeal to me more. That it also has better tech kind of makes it a non-issue for me, as even though I really like the Halo games, they aren't a big enough reason to grab the One. If Titanfall wasn't coming to PC and eventually PS4, that would be another reason.

I do continue the "MS can't win" thing. People have done what they've asked, scrapped all the features people complained about, and all people have done is complain that they wanted those features and that MS should have stuck to their guns. Everyone making 180 jokes is a ****ing retard. You got what you wanted, its lost its uniqueness and you're complaining that it has.


Also - The Kinect camera can be switched off. Its a legal requirement to sell it in a few countries. But people don't want facts they want to blindly hate.

Also I heard someone was challenging the can't sell your games in the German courts, which might have implications for the whole of Europe.

The PS4 had its social networking features mocked when it was unveiled, because they're essentially pointless.

MS are trying to follow the Apple model of taking a cut for everything, that's how windows 8 was set up, and its what they were trying to do with the 180��°.

If they did something innovative with games or entertainment, then maybe I might have condoned it. But the only new thing they tried was restrictive policies for the consumer that benefited the publishers - not the developers - solely.
Nonetheless, again, I'm happy to see that they changed their tune.

I've seen a lot of people saying the One is the better looking because they showed more games, which is technically a fallacy. The reason for that is that Sony said they would have twenty exclusives in the first year, twelve of which were new IPs, while Microsoft has fifteen and eight, respectively. That definitely means Sony didn't want to over-crowd their E3 games, which probably implies that they've got a few big games to announce either at the next E3 or one of the conferences in between. My money is on at least one of them being a God of War game.

Funnily enough, the PS3 had the most games at the show, believe it or not, while the 360 had from memory one of the lowest counts. The PS2 amazingly had a single game at E3.

This year at E3 during the Xbox panel during a scripted “trash talk” bit someone made a scripted rape joke (male gamer to girl gamer who sucks at a game: “just wait, it’ll all be over soon.”) and then they acted like it wasn’t a big deal and then they released an expensive, anti-consumer (DRM on physical games) piece of hardware. And then Sony just released the PS4 which is just the PS3 but better graphics and $100 cheaper than the Xbox. So THAT happened.

But then Nintendo just quietly released a bunch of great looking sequels for all of it’s major franchises (Mario, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, and Smash Bros.) and every single one of those games interestingly features playable female characters who haven’t been seen in decades like Dixie Kong and Princess Peach - and Pikmin now has a new female hero.

One of my favorite things about Peach in the new Mario game is that one of the power ups is a literal “cat suit” and Peach’s “cat suit” doesn’t sexualize her at ALL. You can’t even see her boobs. She just looks like she’s wearing over-sized footie pajamas it’s so cute. Also they added a pink letter to the Mario logo just to accommodate Peach’s re-inclusion into the franchise as a character with actual agency!

So at the end of the presentation they tell you to go to the Smash Bros website to find out about new characters. And then they announced this character, Wii Fit Trainer, on the site. And in an interview the director said he gets thousands of requests for almost every video game character under the sun and he’s gotten absolutely zero requests for this character and he put her in the game to be funny and defy fan expectation. This character is literally “hey **** you we’re the ones making the games around here, and we’ll be goofy and funny if we want to and also check it out another female character in Smash.”

Also the inclusion of the Animal Crossing villager is interesting because Animal Crossing is VERY popular with girls and even though the villager is male I’m 100% certain his alternate costumes will include the girl default villager character. So that’s neat. The three Smash characters they announced were two girl(ish) characters from two girl(ish) games and then Mega Man.

Also in the new Animal Crossing game boys are allowed to cross dress and all of the animals are explicitly genderqueer in the dialog. Characters say stuff like “Boys can ware make up if they want to, I mean, it’s 2013, who cares?” and just today a jock rhino was looking deeply into my eyes and asking me to hike a football and I asked him if he loved me (which was one of the option out of other options about sports) and he was like “Oh I guess a lot can happen when you look into someone else’s eyes like that, huh?” He didn’t even care that we’re both guys. Also in the new Pokemon game you can be black.

Basically what I’m saying is Nintendo is quietly and systematically making their games more socially progressive and Microsoft made a rape joke and then said “what? it was a joke.”
