View Full Version : Deadlifts doing Iyanden

Deadlift

Made a start on what I had ordered.

The yellow in the Codex and WD I found to be just too bright for my taste so I have tried to calm it down a bit. So anyway its a standard Iyanden paint scheme but I have a few tweaks I will be trying as I go on with the army that will hopefully make it stand out from the crowd. Here's the Wraithguard so far.

And I also made a start on my battle board.

I based with grey primer, then pre-shaded the areas I wanted darker with a colour called "Red Clay then over the top I did a very light coat of the yellow which is called "Craven", both paints were from badgers Minitaire range. All done with an airbrush and if you like when I'm on the next box of Wraithguard I will take some progress pics to show what I did.
Thanks for your approval on the models :)

HI Deadlift. Love the colours and the blending.

I take it that the blending on the head was done with an airbrush as well?

Yep, what takes ages by hand is mere seconds with an airbrush :). I have been looking for a longtime at an army I can basically mostly airbrush and as a fan of the wraith fluff, Iyanden fit the bill. I did do a necron army but didn't really gel with the new Necron aesthetic as I was painting. The army looked nice but ultimately ended up making me some money on eBay.

Thanks Cpt Codpiece, I think for now I will just continue painting the stones on the shoulders and the big ones on the legs. That's enough I think.

i thought i had posted earlier in the thread but i must have dropped my connection :(
i meant to say great airbrush work deadlift, the blue is sweet and i love the yellow.... may have to track a UK stockist of minitaire :)
the table is looking great too, really liking the lava...... making me want a RoB so bad now but i have a 4x4 board that im gonna foam up and do a city board

as for the bumps... (i know im going over it again) i too used to try and get every bump a gem till i read it in the WD when the falcon came out and did a half mag article on its making :) seeing the pantograph and Jes' balsa mock ups for it and the vyper.... in said article Jes pointed out that the bumps were not all gems but rather the actual tech of the eldar, so they were like sensors or gyros' or other futuristic gubbins

from that day its been if it was in a setting it was a gem :)

Well I have nearly finished the 1st batch of wraith guard, still debating on adding a "glow" to the gun barrels but not sure. I'm not adding transfers until maybe after my 1st 1000pts are done.
A little touching up needs doing on the black of the guns too, just noticed in the photo, oh well :)

I think the wraithguard guns need something, either a glow or some gems could work.

The humter looks good, I presume that is some sort of stencil. Maybe the pilot could have a red helmet

Lovely! O_o

What colour did you use for the engine glow buddy?

Dark blue, mid blue, light blue and white. Can't remember the names at the moment but all from the minitaire range. I added the white to the remaining light blue in my airbrush to get a really light blend glow on the engine. I'm loving these new elder models, they really allow me to have some fun painting. After this one I'm onto so more Wraithguard or maybe blades. As for keeping the Crimson Hunter theme, I ended up painting the glass a clear tinted red, you can still clearly see the pilot too.
The underneath is reversed, blue with yellow hexagons.

Just need to sort out a bit of overspray in some areas, finish off the blue in some areas, add the weapons and do the base.

I airbrush indoors mate, but my painting area is directly under and in front of a window, open it fully and I'm good to go.

Thanks for the comments guys, the base will be in keeping with the Wraithguard. Snow and rock, with the odd grass tuft.

Crimson Hunter is done, I also added a bit of osl in purple to the Wraithguard gun tips, Big Red, this base was already a WIP so I will be giving your technique a whirl in the next big model I do. Airbrushed a couple more gems and added a panel of black on either side.
Next is either a Spiritseer or maybe more Wraiths, maybe blades this time.

Low tack masking tape and a sharp hobby knife, you have to be very careful that you don't cut into the model itself. It's how I did the cockpit frame too.

Hi there Ze :D
I use vallejo grey primer though an airbrush. However if this isn't an option for you then "model mate" is a brand I can recommend for aerosol grey primer. If I remember rightly you live in the UK ? So you should be able to find it in a local model shop or online. They do 2 greys a dark and a light as well as white and black. Some suggest army painter for priming, especially coloured ones. Too hit and miss for me and I won't touch them. Hope this helps mate.

my fave grey primer, is tamiya haze grey TS-32. UK shop modelzone sells it, its not hugely expensive but its not cheap
it is quite dark, almost the same as bare GW plastic. but it is nice has a hint of blue/purple in that lends well to flesh tones..... useless for yellow though :)

Hi guys, just a quick update to prove I haven't given up the ghost on this project, So I did intend on doing some more Wraithguard but decided to do a pair of Lords instead. I had intended to buy a Knight but I think he is going to wait until the end.
Anyway nothing special really so far just like the guard but on a grander scale. This guys will end up with bright lances and flames, to add some range to my army.

I guess next it's going to be a Spiritseer or another Wraithguard unit. I know the Wraithblades might not be a competitive choice but I'm drawn to painting some. Not sure about Swords or Axe and Shield. Likely the latter.
I'm also thinking of a Wraithseer. Would be rude not to include one.

Quick update, I have a game of Kill Team coming up and decided that as Eldar I would take Warp Spiders. The Wraith Knight is still on the go but I need to get 10 of these done in 2 weeks. Not overly happy with the 1st one and I ****ing hate painting finecast. It's not the modeling aspect of finecast I hate. As a material it's great but I just don't like painting it.

He's a bit shiny from the varnish to protect the model from the oil wash but after a tidy up, a Matt varnish and base being done he will be finished.

So (a) it would save me some cash, (b) they aren't finecast, which I hate painting and (c) I'm sure nobody would mind.

No airbrushing here though, it's all brushwork.

So now I'm onto x3 wave serpents. I had a few nice comments about my Crimson Hunter so I thought I would show you how I did it with the same simple technique here.

1. Waveserpants are primed with light grey, and then I used a muddy brown colour and used the colour in the areas I wanted to appear darker (pre-shading)

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab3/joenortonjones/6a2ac94e11339d7ec891be2f9b45dfab.jpg

2. I then went in with some white on the higher edges to create slightly lighter areas.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab3/joenortonjones/6122051e3827dd159dfe3fa7bd8a5301.jpg

3. Went in with the yellow and airbrushed the shells of the waveserpants. Making sure not to hold the airbrush in one place for too long. Sort of sweeping side to side motions to get an even coat. Regoing over any areas that I may have been over zealous with the pre-shading.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab3/joenortonjones/807c0ba34bae539fc0c693477bf20d2e.jpg

Job done. Took about 30 mins total for all 3. Now I will let them dry and hit them with some varnish before I start masking off areas for the blue areas.

I like the hexagons and the sort of sunburst on the fins. I'm not sure about the blue stripe in the middle but it may look different when broken up by the turret.

The wraithguard are looking good and I think the wraithknight just needs a little more work on the gems (mainly the centre one) to bring it in line with everything else.

Really great work. I've only just purchased an airbrush myself this year and you've given me a tonne of inspiration. The effects on your Flyer earlier in the thread, the Wraithlords and the Wraithknight are amazing. I've also finally settled on using the minitaire range myself, tried a few then brought the whole range :)

Might I ask how you go about washing/inking? I get stuck on that after airbrusing on base coats and highlights.

And if you've used the Minitaire varnishes? I have them but haven't tried them yet, I'm still using the tamiya ones.

Keep it up!

Hi matey and thank you for the kind comments. As for washes, on these guys I have used them very sparingly. My wash of choice is by secret weapon and it's called "soft body black" I don't cover the model either, I paint it on in the areas I want it. Around the gems, joints etc. on my Spiritseer (warlock) I used GWs reikiand flesh on his robes. I have been known to dabble in making oil washes but it's a pain in the arse to be honest.

The minitaire varnishes seem pretty good, I have used these and the Vallejo equivalent and really can not tell much difference. Just make sure you scrub your airbrush straight away after using it.

Cheers :D

Not overly sure about the blue intake grills, but other than that I really like them :) the turrets certainly add a nice punctuation to the blue line on the hulls.

Yay an update!
I do like the markings.
You need to get one of those display hover kits...

Cheers guys, after these guys are finished I have 10 Wraithguard to do then I'm at 2000pts.

20 Wraith guard
2 Wraith lords
1 Wraith knight
3 Wave serpents
1 Spiritseer
1 Crimson hunter

Total of 28 models.

Not sure what to get after these are done, maybe a Wraithseer or Avatar.

Is that a legal force?

Yeah

1 HQ
4 Troop choices
3 Dedicated Transports
1 Fast Attack
3 Heavy Support

Not completely competitive I guess, but we don't play uber lists in my group. It's more fluffy and what you like.

Here is the army as it is at the moment. Few transfers here and there but not much detail in the pic. This is just a group pic of the last 4 months worth of painting ;)
