That's right folks, a Bastion - the logical progression from my Tyranid Aegis Defence Line. Of course if I do the Bastion then the logical next step is a Skyshield Landing Platform and then a Fortress of Redemption but lets not run before we can walk.

Occasionally I'll draw myself a little sketch of what I'm after and so my first attempt tried to match the proportions of the existing Imperial Bastion but this is going to be completely scratchbuilt. I'm all for Tyranid infested Imperial terrain but a completely scratchbuilt affair holds appeal for me because it will be unique, match my army, be a challenge and will cost me nothing [importance not in that order].

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e5A6MFuvBvw/UX5ObEOQ93I/AAAAAAAAHiA/FNHFL-Q9Eac/s320/bastion3.jpg

However, recently I've seen a variety of Xenos bastions that use the GW moonscape as a base and as I have a couple of spare pieces I thought they might be a potential stepping stone. So this is the revised concept sketch, however mounting the 'heavy bolters' on it's compass points will be difficult given the Chitinous towers already situated there. What I may do is make the towers sit slightly angled opposite each other that way the left and right weapon can be in the East and West positions and then the North and south guns will be asymmetrically opposite, one in the right hand Southern wall and the other in the left Northern wall. With 'sphincter doors' [as seen in Advanced Space Crusade] in the left Southern and right Northern.

Taking advice from isotope99 I went for the bigger crater so I have more room to work with. This is the skeletal beginnings. You can see the height to the roof is 150mm and then you have a 20mm wall that will go round the roof with some ridges that will add a centimetre up to the 180mm max height with the Tyranid Capillary styled towers that form the compass points.

Next up I'll be adding the cross-members and probably be cutting slots in the crater base so that I can have it glued straight to the mounting card base underneath. Then I have to decide how to fill out the gaps between the frame and how to create the Capillary Towers. More details and pics on my blog.

I wondered if it was worth sharing but I guess so. With the same base and the foam core structure it could be a starting point for any Tyranid bastion. How you then fill it out and decorate it would be up to you or you could do something similar to my project. I'll look to put it online soon.

Looks good so far.

I'll be keeping an eye on this.

I've been having quite a debate with myself on the issues of this non-imperial bastion and how closely it should follow the template from the standard model. In some respect I've already gone off-piste with an oblong design instead of square/circular. This could be construed as 'modelling for advantage' as I can create a wider LoS blocking piece of terrain. Of course it's really modelling to fit the crater so I can argue the case for that, however I actually read the rules for buildings for the first time properly and discovered a Bastion is classed as a 'medium sized building' which outside of the Bastion rules could be any building measuring up to 9"x9", which is quite a footprint. My Bastion is currently measuring in at roughly 8.5"x4.5", considerably less so again I think I can contend with any debate.

The other issue is weapons and firing ports. Now the standard Bastion has an emplaced Heavy Bolter at each compass point. Much as it pains me with my design I will be following this with a bolter asymetrically placed North and South i.e. North in the left tower and south in the right tower [the one not with the door]. the East and West ones are a bit more ungainly as they will have to but alongside the Capillary tower ends. The only alternative is to this would be to have two facing North and two South but I can't justify this 'broadside' configuration given the advantages this might bring so N, S, E and W it is.

Fire points will also be an issue as they should follow the compass points two with 7 vantage points in total. However there's just no way I can design this thing for them to fit that way so I will will have four on the north facing [in the original design below I was going to have 5 but given the advantages and the fact they just won't fit the design I dropped it to 4] and two on the South facing. Ultimately every list I make that will include the Bastion will also have a 75pt alternative option that I will smiling swap out should my opponent be concerned [at which point I will happily name and shame their a$$e$ on my blog! Ha, ha!]

Just noticed I called this thread Tyranid Basiton instead of Bastion  Oh well, you know what I mean. Further to splnes request I've added a template to my blog should you wish to try your own version and need a starting point, it's here:

http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/you-asked-and-great-devourer-provides.html

Updates will be following shortly on the blog and in this thread, it's going really well, here's a little further on

And the crater base with slots to fit the template:

I've done some sketches myself of a Tyranid Bastion but I've yet to get round to it. So far so good, got any ideas for what to make the walls out of?

It's been a voyage of discovery for me so far using a number of new materials suggested by an unlikely source and it'll be in the blog but simply I bulked out the gaps between the template core with plain old white styrene foam and bits of lemonade bottle. I then used wall tile adhesive to give a hard surface which I've covered and sculpted in DAS air drying clay but I've started adding Milliput [for durability in areas like the towers, where it'll be prone to wear and tear.

Alternatively my mate Otty did tissue paper mache on his Mycetic Spore (http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/moar-from-my-mate-otty-his-tyranid.html).

Latest update on the growth of my Tyranid Bastion using lemonade bottle plastic to fill out some more of walls and chitinous plates:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jILaYqyM0_I/UaiMYp1pv4I/AAAAAAAAIS0/z5wVpPnXaS0/s320/C360_2013-05-16-06-29-47-089.jpg

A standard Imperial Bastion can hold 15 miniatures on the roof and so can a Tyranid equivalent. However, I imagine it will be considearbly less on completion due to the sculpting but less is better given the size of the thing

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vcbBOCjiXLk/UaiMYj-vwmI/AAAAAAAAIS0/vO0-up4PlDA/s320/C360_2013-05-16-06-32-15-376.jpg

The base of the lemonade bottle provided the five chitinous plates on each 'capillary tower' - fiddly to work with but cheap and cheerful.

Looking awesome mate. Are you going to do a weapon or comms relay for the top, similar to your aegis line?

dwez
06-17-2013, 09:44 AM
The current Quad Gun would fit in the smaller tower, it just manages it with the sculpting. I may be looking to create a comms relay too, I like the idea of +1 to my reserve roll, particularly when my opponents Warlord Trait is -1 to it. I think I'll make it out of spare Venom Cannon barrels, my mate Otty did something similar for objective markers. I hate the Venom Cannon design as a weapon but I like it as a vertical Tyranid terrain piece

I've 'iced the cake' with some tile adhesive/grout, next up sand it back for a decent base to sculpt on.

The next step was to sand the 'icing' back so I could have a nice base to put my sculpting on top of. Admittedly this doesn't seem a huge amount of progress [that's the next step] but effort now really helps later on.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SHlzFZAcnTA/Ua3QmhNhPUI/AAAAAAAAIY4/jXGPVlrgLnI/s200/CAM00043.jpg

Here's the sketch that helped me position the fire points and emplaced weapons

Which I then transferred onto the model itself so I can see where I'm going to sculpt and what I have to cut back into the model

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jaaGwU7tCZ4/Ua3Qmjv0EEI/AAAAAAAAIY4/mcd4kJNJv70/s200/CAM00047.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6W8KeLAlY0k/Ua3Qmi-qcJI/AAAAAAAAIY4/hh49-QloCGY/s200/CAM00048.jpg

here' we go folks, some proper sculpting. These are the bits that will be Bonewhite.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UGjIomntHEc/Ua8TApPgzeI/AAAAAAAAIaY/hIMo9TRSAAQ/s320/C360_2013-06-03-23-40-22-462.jpg

All done with DAS air drying clay, which was fun to use and cheap

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hoL0jOEiTWA/Ua8TAqsF4vI/AAAAAAAAIaY/9jP90kyCPkE/s320/C360_2013-06-04-21-56-57-644.jpg

However I think there are paper fibres in it somehow which makes it slightly less durable than Milliput, with a bit of effort I can sratch the surface with my nail, but it should be durable enough. I also smoothed out some of the interiors of the Capillary Towers, ripe for their fleshy fibre bundles

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9cacw6QpLWM/Ua8TAnbEmFI/AAAAAAAAIaY/sSM_qZenxyI/s320/C360_2013-06-04-21-57-19-063.jpg

Now going back to the original concept it's quite close, if a little taller than what I had in mind [which actually I was desparate to avoid but hopefully the Capillary Towers will help it fill out at the base to taper more]

Although it'll be a while yet before this is an actual update it's just taken me 30 minutes to paint the turquoise striations on one Chitin plate on the Bastion, not one Capillary tower, just one plate on one tower! There are 20 plates in total, although it was the largest one. I may be some time...

Meanwhile, next update on Friday.

Very cool. How durable/heavy is it? I have never used that type of sculpting clay before but it looks like it is pretty nice to work with on large surfaces. My only concern is will it hold up to the riggers of the battle field.

Also that thing on top is gross haha!

Good questions, completed weight is 960g according to my kitchen scales. As for durability I'm confident it will survive the battlefield no problems.

The only real concerns would be if I dropped it, I've no idea what would happen then and also how to transport the damn thing. I expect to take it to Warhammer World the next time I attend a tournament and I also imagine I'll be giving it a few test runs beforehand but I'll probably revert to a less awkward list once it's served it's purpose. Hmm, what a waste of effort!

As you can see I've started to weaponise it as well with four Tyrnaid 'heavy bolters' [gotta love their 36" range, it's a shame I have to use Imperial tech, if only GW made Xenos specific terrain...]

Additional Milliput Chitin plates have been sculpted, just to explain, to preserve the sculpt I'm only doing one layer at a time. I'm really not sure it would work wel to keep laying Milliput down each time without screwing up what I've already crafted. Still, my paint scheme is actually quite forgiving so perhaps I was needlessly concerned.

Not much of an update as I always post retrospectively and in the real world my bastion is now complete, I'm just struggling to fit it into my blogging schedule and then within these project logs. However, it was completed for a Battle Brothers event at Warhammer World and I came away with these:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9vX8EQPyzmY/UeMmLAn11JI/AAAAAAAAJrg/P4mMc4pdAVA/w622-h467-no/C360_2013-07-14-22-48-55-794.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rHNIRAgdDUQT_VItHi0f5UVTVUOVDEjAqzqXE6cV1Zc=w622-h467-no

So that's best Fortification, which would be a more deserved win if there had been more than just two entrants. Nominated with my Battle Bro for best painted army and the Acolyte of War Award is for 2nd place overall. Indeed our combined Nid force came 2nd out of 68 pairs, pretty awesome considering I'd never met my partner until the day.

Anyway I'll be egtting some painting updates in place but if you know where to look there are pictures of it online and my upcoming battle reports will also have shots of it, although unintentially very few a re close-ups or show significant details so at least the updates here will answer all those questions.

You'll be pleased to know this is the last of the painting progress updates of the Tyranid Bastion, there's only one more post to go after this - the final model and that will probably be in my Hive Fleet Gorgon - Ferron Splinter Fleet (http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/showthread.php?26335-Hive-Fleet-Gorgon-Ferron-Splinter-Fleet) post with whatever fluff I can think of that's a thinly veiled attack on those who believe:
a) Tyranids aren't allowed Fortifications [because they heard somewhere they can't use a quad-gun and Chinese whispers ensued]
b) Tyranids shouldn't have Fortifications because their understanding of the fluff fails to address them actually protecting their Hive [y'know where they live and convert biomass]
c) Fortifications are only deployed in your deployment zone, not in fact your table half

and also a shout out to mention the lack of 'official' Xenos terrain.

Anyway here's some of the highlights from the latest update:

Will you be pleased to know that this is it? Finally done and dusted... or done and bloodied. Not sure which four pictures to choose, maybe one pre Tamiya X-27 and the other three post? I'll let the pictures speak for themselves but as usual if you want to know more there's a link to the blog at the bottom. I'll be preparing a basic Armies on Parade board next that this will feature on but eventually I hope to work up some Capillary Towers for my next Tyranid terrain.

Fantastic work, the level of creepiness you have invoked with the slimy watery surfaces is amazing. I would love to see this on a battlefield with your army.
