Wolfshade
07-01-2013, 02:33 AM
Some of these kickstarters are annoying me. Legitamate companies do not need kickstarting. Imagine if Microsoft did a kickstarter for Office (n+1), it is crazy. The cost of RnD should be included in your overhead, you can't just keep going cap in hand to the community and ask for more monies because you failed to cover your costs on your previous one.

Have you seen the apocalypse formations? Didn't the SM companies come with the transport vehicles last time for about £275?
I certainly remember the Leman Russ company was £150 last time round. Some proper comparable figures at last?
Wolfie if you go for the bog standard sets you can build your chapter from scratch less than £4.5k until you add vehicles and BA stuff...
Mr Mystery
07-01-2013, 06:12 AM
Meh! Not really of concern for me.

Grrr. Apparently, some goon has invented talking cigarette packets.
Just. Sod. Off.
Yes. I am a smoker. Yes. I am aware I'm addicted. Yes, I know it's no good for me.
But hey, they're my lungs. I've already cut down considerably, but dash it all, I genuinely enjoy a smoke. Getting the packet to bleat at me isn't going to change that. It'll just mean I transfer my smokes to a tin, and chuck the packet. Well. I would if I didn't smoke roll ups anyway. No, not a hipster thing. It's way cheaper, and I prefer the taste.
Psychosplodge
07-01-2013, 08:52 AM

Seems confidence is up in the business sector, and Britain's return to growth is expected to continue and strengthen.
Here's hoping the pace picks up over the next year or so. More financial liquidity and fewer money worries in the populace reduces the volume of the far right accordingly. And my word do we need that.

Weren't they problematic and rebuilt as the A3s? Not as big a train nut as some of my brothers. I just think the streamlined look of the A4s is so beautiful and Art Deco. I am fond of the A3 though, I've also hugged the Flying Scotsman. Hur.

Quake 3 had some of the first "learning" AI bots. If a tactic worked they'd keep doing it. If it got them killed they stopped doing it. A guy left his server running bot matches for 3 years.
After 3 years he checked on them. The AI files had grown from a few Mb to tens of gigs of learning. Their new tactic? Stand completly still. All the AI had learned was the only viable tactic to stay alive was to not fight....

people with job vacancies should just state what the salary is, I don't see why it has to be a big secret and part of a cunning quiz. had another interview today for a bank, menial post handling job. guy asked me how much I expected a job like that to pay. I said I had no idea. he seemed to take that as some sort of challenge or insult and insisted I must know. I told him I would take 12k a year, he said it pays more than that. I said great. why not just tell me how much? why must it be a guessing game or a round of battleships? not the first time an interviewer has acted like I slapped them in the face when talking money.

Kirsten

very fun yes, I spent a week playing co-op space game with a friend at uni after we finished exams, Freelancer possibly?
I really hate moronic questions. I have been criticised before for not learning by rote the history of the company I am applying for. seriously, does going online and finding out how many you employ and in how many countries and offices affect my ability to type numbers into a program? I had an interview a few years ago in which I was asked what my ideal salary was, I said 14k would do me fine, the woman looked like I had just grievously insulted her and told me the job paid 18. so why not just say that? 'can you give an example of a time you gave good customer service?' you have my CV, you can see where I have worked, you know whether I will be any good at customer service or not. The question is also utterly redundant when the job involves opening post and making sure there is enough milk in the kitchen fridge.
Mr Mystery
07-03-2013, 01:20 PM
Interview for current job was pretty cool.
Part of it was a case study, to show ability to pick out information. The other half was a straight forward 'so who are you and what can you do?' type interview, with no idiotic 'thinking outside of the box' type questions.
For current position, written statement, case study and bespoke view, then final stage coaching role play.
No silly stuff. Highly appreciated!

Favorite question ever: "So, why do you want to work for us?"
"Because you're hiring and I don't have a job, dumb****."
Edit: I've actually avoided most of the stupid questions in the interviews I've had. Maybe it's because when you're applying to USMC OCS, they don't care about how big you can talk, they just care if you can run fast and have good grades, and engineering companies care more about what programs and design manuals you're familiar with.

We have a meeting discussion that an alogrithm we use does not work as intended, is based on historic data which is 10 years old, this is missing for newer areas and has been estimated, has 0 confidence by the operational staff.
We decided that we needed to either renew the alogrith, or replace it with something else.
So two collegues and I set about the latter, and each came up with a model based on existing alogrithms and structures but expanding them to their logical conclusion or updating them. We had some sucess, well my model was particularly efficient, but it had the slight draw back of not being able to replicate well observed data, which it could be worked around given that at maximum efficiency my data was +/- 20% so within that tolerance it was fine. Another didn't get off the paper as it needed data we couldn't collect/model, and the other showed no variance from ideal conditions no matter how loaded the model became.
It took us about a week to get to that point where we were able to come to have our prototypes coded, callibrated and ran under different scenarios, plus 2 all day meetings in advance of this to start up.
Had an email today saying that we were going to re-use the existing flawed alogrithm, apparently this decision was made the day after we had been tasked to be innovative.
I am very angry with this as it is another example of having the opportunity to have something better and improve on what has gone before which has been ignored and reused. A similiar situation came up about 3 months ago and it went the same way, only it took about 18 months of wrangling and weighing up different options before it was decided to use what we had already.

I see that there is one massive reason for doing it alone, regardless of safety improvements is the aerodynmaic effect. That will reduce fuel bills lower shipping costs which has to be a good thing.
In terms of safety, there is a big problem of visibility in the cab, especially when things get close.
There have been many suggestions before, on was dropping the cab height to "car level" as that reduces the near blind spots.
Having a front end that pushes things off to the side must be a good thing, as at the moment they are more kinda hit and drag under which is nasty.
In my experiance lorry drivers are less of a problem than panel van, and school run mom. They tend to give me plenty of room, I always wonder how much of that is because beyond a point they really have no idea where I am until I reappear (hopefully) in the mirror.
Of course if we moved everything by train/canal it wouldn't be a problem ;)

I've got a stall there and wondered if any Bolsters would be popping by to say hi?
I would, but it's in London, so more hassle than it's worth.
It seem no one has taken the opportunity to wish the colonial types Happy Independence Day (though why on earth they'd be happy about being permanently exiled from the civilised embrace of the motherland escapes me), so I'll do so. Happy Independence Day American friends.
And that would be why. What have they to celebrate? Maybe we should offer commiserations instead?
Going grey, never going bald.
With my family, you tend to get one or the other around the age of 20....
And dying it is not an option since I ditched my long flowing locks!
Know that feeling, Been going grey longer than I haven't now...

Indeed.
If I comb it the right way it's a distinguished grey streak :D
@Wildey This is probably why we didn't bother... :D

I'm complete, mint in box only I'm afraid :(
It should be a great fair. If any one is coming down I'll be the bald, fat guy with a beard in a star wars T-shirt........oh.
I saw Star Trek Into Darkness with a buddy and some of his roommates, one of whom is a hardcore trekkie who sits around playing video games and getting fat on pizza and soda all day. First thing he said after getting out of the theater? "Vulcans are just superior, Khan shouldn't have been able to stand up to Spock in a fight."

That's the point where you nod, and then back away slowly.

There were many more on the tumblr post I stole this example from, so possibly, but it wasn't presented as such.

Not on this specific point but in general.....I am that guy minus the roomate, hardcore, video games and pizza.
I love getting pointlessly, nerdyily angry about stuff.

It's not life or death, it's much more important.

Lastnight I had virtual underwear:

Today I got very angry with a people carrier driver and almost broke his window. In my defence he did try and kill me. Going round a courner, I think "Hmm that car is a little too close", look down and my rear wheel is under his car. Very angry.

That's brilliant. Not seen that one before...
How low do you lean?

Abbeydale, should be local to you. Black Mass was nice IIRC at Dev.Cat.
Lean angle? Depends how fast I go, at that time, my knee was probably 2-3' off the ground so it wasn't obscene

I noticed. I do enjoy their moonshine :D A beer trip to town may be in order.
But low enough to be under their car?

I'm with you.
I understand why they aren't good but without fox screwing them up we wouldn't have had Iron Man and Avengers which I loved.
