Found this, kind of interesting. Gives me the thought that it would be a better idea for welfare to be a free apartment and food stamps rather than a paycheck.

While commendable, it requires enough vacant housing stock to enact.

Sensible idea, but as Wolfy says you need the houses. Which if those reports about construction pre-GFC were accurate you would have? All that talk of vast empty suburbs and stuff and a housing surplus. We have a significant housing shortage on the other hand so it's not really a practical solution here sadly but kudos to the Utahrans.

This is easy.
Use sampling software, and recordings of *shudder* Big Brother. And a massive speaker.
Then play them back their very own eviction voiceover.
Being mindless mouthbreathers, I'm 99% sure this will work.
Use software and recordings to create their own eviction

I needed a quick reality check today.
You see, Canary Wharf (where I work) has always reminded me of Delta City. Especially when I get the glass elevator up to my office floor.
And as I walked back to my coach stop on my way home, I saw the video billboard showing an advert for the new Robocop film.....

Just stumbled across this, thought I'd post it since we were talking about this a pages ago: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HFKX24Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HFKX24Y&linkCode=as2&tag=bengree-20%22
One of the first lessons you learn as a raw vegan is how to convince yourself that symptoms of malnourishment are actually good things.... To the uninformed, it might seem alarming that I shivered uncontrollably in 70-degree weather-but as the self-appointed raw-food gurus explained, it really just meant I was detoxing. My rapid loss of muscle mass was necessary for purging old, toxin-contaminated cells. Ditto for the fistfuls of hair I was shedding in the shower. And best of all, my inability to focus on anything in front of me was helpful for staying centered in the present moment, thus expediting my path to enlightenment.... It all changed that ill-fated November when I found myself walk-ing through the doors of my dentist's office. A full year of raw veganism had come to a wrap. I was seventeen: thinner, paler, clum-sier, and less capable of forming a coherent sentence than I'd been at any other point in my existence. San Francisco couldn't hold a candle to all the fog in my brain.

I have this argument with a creationist acquaintance of mine.
She believes that all Christians should be vegans.
When I ask her where it says it in the bible, she waves her hand toward Genesis 1:29, which for her is quite concise.
I then point towards Noah, where God says if you can see it you can eat it essentially, and again in Pauls vision of the meat buffet (may not be the theologocial name for it ;) )
So she then counters that with the line "well all of that happened after the fall" (expulsion from eden).
So then I then point out, that the entirity of the front of our mouths are designed to rip and tear flesh. Now this she cannot cope with, because we were either designed to eat meat, or we evolved, now neither of these solutions are acceptable as she cannot accept evolution and cannot accept that we were designed to eat meat. At this point she shouts loudly, I sigh and wonder why I bothered having this conversation yet again.
I am sure that there are suitable counters to it, but she is not very erudite.

One of the MEP's for the West Midlands is Nikki Sinclair, neither her sexual orientation nor her status of transgenderness actually has anything to do with the point, so why I included it I don't know, I think I might need to reconsider that post. She want on a rant about cyclists needing registration and to display a registration number so as to be accountable for their behaviour, but it was truely weird and very ill informed. (from wikipodia)
Following the Christianisation of the Roman Empire in late antiquity, vegetarianism practically disappeared from Europe as it was in other Continents, except India. Several orders of monks in medieval Europe restricted or banned the consumption of meat for ascetic reasons, but none of them eschewed fish. (The medieval definition of "fish" included such animals as seals, porpoises, dolphins, barnacle geese, puffins, and beavers.)
It re-emerged during the Renaissance, becoming more widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1847, the first Vegetarian Society was founded in the United Kingdom; Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries followed

The psychological affect of being given a "cure" is quite phenomenal, one only needs to look at the placebo effect to see how effective it can be. Now certainly, I do not think it should be used exclusively, or in preference to cures with a proven efficacy, but perhaps it does have it's place.
If you are to ban "faith healing" do you also ban herbal remedies and alternate medicine?

if it leads to four kids dying who could have easily lived? damn right I do. those parents are guilty of murder.
The issue is the parents, not the "faith healing". If the parents haven't told children of road safety and they are run over by a car, do you ban all cars?
Kirsten
01-25-2014, 06:23 AM
cars do not get special protection because of religion. faith healing is demonstrably nonsense, it does not work. medical treatment does work, it has research and figures that tell you what works and what doesn't. If you refuse to treat your child with something proven to work, and decide to wish upon a star instead, then you should be prosecuted. Faith healing is just a religious scapegoat term, 'you can't prosecute me, I am not neglectful, it is just my religion'. I bet parents would be up in arms if somebody said 'I didn't take my child to hospital because the voices told me not to' or because they were using jedi mind powers instead, but christianity is supposedly legitimate and therefore protected. If an adult wants to avoid treatment and ask the faeries that is their problem, and they are better off out of the gene pool, but when you force it on kids, and kill kids as a result, then that is not ok.

Faith healing really doesn't compare to alternative medicine.
Many forms of alternative medicine have been proven to work scientifically (many have been disproven too, but ...).
Faith healing has been thoroughly disproven.
Very few people will choose to have alternative medicine and not have regular medicine alongside.
I'm not aware of any case where a parent chose to use alternative medicine on a child and refused regular medical treatment.
Also, the vast majority of practitioners of alternative medicine will tell you to get regular medical treatment alongside (or instead of) alternative treatment if the situation is, y'know, life-threatening.

No cars get special protection because of privilege, but we won't get into that. The issue isn't faith healing, it is the inappropriate use, or its exclusive use. Which is the fault of the parents. If I overdosed my children with enough vitamin A that their skin peeled off, that isn't a fault with vitamin A or should force it to be banned, it is with my fault.

So then what's your complaint with regulating faith healing?
I have no issue. The difficulty is what is "faith healing". Essentially, it is prayer, maybe including "laying on of hands" none of which is inherently dangerous. The church catholic continually offers prayers for its members who are ill, how would you even attempt to regulate this? In the established church, the service of laying on hands is regulated, purely being a function that clergy can perform, though that does not stop the laity perfoming similiar acts. None of which is inherently dangerous.
The issue is that the parent's were irresponsible, now that could be as a result of their belief, but that should no way detract from the responsibility that the parents have.
One needs to just look at the measel epidemic in south Wales last year more than 1,200 people fell ill, 88 visited hospital and one person died in the outbreak which began in November 2012. Now the reason for this was that parents were opting out of giving their children a MMR vaccine, I don't recall seeing one parent claim that the MMR jab was refused because of religious objections (though I may be wrong, and even if there were some they would end up with herd protection anyway), instead it was a purely secular decision with immunisation rates dropping form 94% down to 68%. So why don't we try and find some scapegoat for this instead? Afterall it can't be the parent's fault!

A lot of alternative therapies have indeed been shown to work. The problem is that a lot of them don't work any better than a placebo, ie. nothing at all (or, at least, just the experience of "going through a treatment" with no active ingredient).
The test for whether something "works" medically isn't whether it does anything at all or nothing, but whether it's better than placebo.
Amusingly, a significant amount of Real Medicine isn't better or much better than placebo for some people either.

All: wut
Me: Cool, change of plans. Frank, pass me the cultist robes and ritual knife; ****it, give me every non-essential clue we’ve found so far.
GM: No.. no no no no
Me: So, I hop out of the van (after you stop it Lucille), find the nearest camera, shout the catchphrase of the Cult of the Sire, slit his throat and then ram the knife into his heart. I drop the keycard and ID badge and jump back into the van.
Lucille: Free reinforcements, yee-haw ^_^!

Slitting it's throat may not be the most inhumane manner of killing a beasty, but there's no need for it when there are more efficient, instantaneous methods available.
Oddly, Halal and Kosher both came from hygiene practices and respect for the animal (as in, if you want to take the leg, kill it first, doofus). They've just haven't moved with the times.
And that's something veggies don't seem to get. Yes. I do know how this animal died. And I'm actually ok with that, as I buy from my local butcher, ensuring I can trace my meatymeatydindins back to a local farm, and get organic when I can afford it.

Yes, I think it is more common to see halal meats than kosher. Kosher seems to be restricted to specific jewish butchers.

What a stupid suggestion. Quite aside from the horrible nanny state vision of banning kids from owning phones, does she honestly imagine it will stop the problem. Like they don't have friends with phones, or computers with web cams in their rooms or tablets with in built cameras. They going to ban all those as well. Do we even do that to terrorists?
Mystery, I have to disagree. Criminalising them won't get the point across. Do you think that stops them with thinks like alcohol or tobacco or drugs? The only way you get the message across is through education. Don't share the pictures and don't take them in the first place.

He may have jumped, it may have been an accident. Nobody knows for now!

Mystery, I have to disagree. Criminalising them won't get the point across. Do you think that stops them with thinks like alcohol or tobacco or drugs? The only way you get the message across is through education. Don't share the pictures and don't take them in the first place.
Neither of those things are criminal. It's illegal to sell to underage people, but your possessing them underage isn't going to get you a criminal record.
At most you'd get a fixed penalty for some other offence like public consumption in a banned area, or public order or something.
If you start putting all these people on the sex offenders register you risk people not taking it seriously anymore, look at points for speeding, now its camera enforced who bats an eyelid if you have 3 or 6 points?
Why do these things always say 'fell'? He didn't fall. No one falls of the top of sky scraper filled with banking offices. They jump. On purpose. I wish the news wouldn't sugar coat these things
Unless they're a particularly incompetent contractor...

Yeah. I understand that you know on clear days it is quite easy to avoid potholes and the like, but in the dark and rain it is sometimes very hard to avoid them, either by bike or by car. Surely the local gov has a duty of care to maintain these to a degree that is fit for public use. In the same way they would clear up broken glass in a children's playground, and not expect the kids to just avoid it.

Yup.
But, they have 3 months from when a pothole is first reported to get them fixed. And it's a hell of a job proving exactly when that specific pothole was first logged.

so the song 30000 pounds of bananas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGldNpngDws
I did some calculations, and
30000 pounds is 49656 US Dollars
Per Commodity Prices, a Metric ton of Bananas are 911.60 US dollars (http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/?commodity=bananas Circa June)
so that means 49656 Dollars equals 54.47 (rounded) Metric Tons Of Bananas!
What all these calculations tell me... Mr. Chapin was either a banana addict, or was stockpiling! :D
PS 54.47 metric tons equals 120085lb 12.863oz

cat poop in litter doesn't smell if it is the decent kind and cleaned out routinely, I should know I have a cat
Now dogs on the oither hand DO STINK, once youy get a wet dog in the house, that stink hangs around like there is no tomorrow
Dogs are interactive and part of the family.
Dogs are stupid, after all why would a dog mistreated still look up to it's owner if it was smart, Cats get mistreated, if they can get out they won't ever bother coming back, they know what's good for them unlike dogs!
And one day I shall a dog all my own and I will squish them ....
