Awwwwh, had a super feels moment yesterday.
Out with the missus, decide to pop quickly to GW, and I see my little friend, a 14 year old lad named Joe. He's such a lovely kid, puts a ton of effort into his hobby and is generally a very bubbly and caring kid.
I noticed that he had scars on his face and obviously asked "How'd you get them mate? Been wrestling bears again?"
"Yeah, that was it" and he looked awkwardly at the ground.
This isn't the first time that he has had scars on his face, so I look at my missus and she's like "find out what's up with him"
I take him for a quick snack run to the local newsagents and I ask him again.
Turns out that they were self-inflicted scars. It hit me like a brick of sad. This kid is like a little bro to me, so I gave him a hug, my phone number, and I said that in future he should talk to me if he's feeling down not hurt himself. I've been there done that, and I'm gradually going to get out of him why he feels the need to self-harm.
I told my missus who said she'd help support him too.
Wildeybeast
01-12-2014, 05:38 AM
Good on you mate, but the kids needs professional help ASAP. The to find out if he's getting any. Given how prominent the spec harm is, I would hope so, but still worth checking out.

In slightly less depressing news, I put two new shoes on my car yesterday set me back a little bit :( then driving away two warning lights come on, battery and engine filter. Drive to the garage and they say alternator isn't working and there is water in the diesel filter. I says how much will that cost? They will need to investigate especially given the fuel filter was replaced last month.
So been driving around no issues today, then go to leave the grandparents, car starts first time no problems. Lights on everything is fine. Then about 4 miles from home there isn't enough power to run the power steering so the steering is troublesome. A few moments later the dashboard goes out. No speedo, no rev metre nothing. 2 miles to go there isn't enough power to run the windscreen wipers. 1 mile to go the lights are too see by if the road wasn't already lit.
Just hope there is enough juice to get it to the garage tomorrow.
Time for a new car...

I would imagine water in the diesel sounds equally terminal. Though loss of power can be as simple as the belt on the alternator.

An eighth son of an eighth son is automatically a wizard. When a wizard nears death – which they know some time in advance – he formally passes on his staff to a newborn wizard. If a wizard happens to have an eighth son, this child will be a "wizard squared" or "Sourcerer", as he generates his own magic and can therefore do just about anything with no effort. This is very dangerous, both because absolute power corrupts absolutely, and because it increases background magic levels considerably. Because of this, wizards generally lack children, due to both rigid celibacy laws and overall non-enabling personality. Besides a mention of Krull (see below) and the prominent Eskarina Smith, all wizards are implicitly male, though this may be a cultural bias of the Unnamed Continent confirmed by narravitium.

Death in Mort actually made me laugh in public, I mean, full on belly laughing. Where once there was silence, next was my chortle. Builds up a fearful image of Death and then, lolz.
Specifically:
And then they heard the clip-clop of hooves, which boomed rather more loudly around the chilly square than common acoustics should really allow. In fact clip-clop was an astonishingly inaccurate word for the kind of noise which rattled around Mort's head; clip-clop suggested a rather jolly little pony, quite possibly wearing a straw hat with holes cut out for its ears. An edge to this sound made it very clear that straw hats weren't an option.
The horse entered the square by the Hub road, steam curling off its huge damp white flanks and sparks striking up from the cobbles beneath it. It trotted proudly, like a war charger. It was definitely not wearing a straw hat.
The tall figure on its back was wrapped up against the cold. When the horse reached the centre of the square the rider dismounted, slowly, and fumbled with something behind the saddle. Eventually he – or she – produced a nosebag, fastened it over the horse's ears, and gave it a friendly pat on the neck.
The air took on a thick, greasy feel, and the deep shadows around Mort became edged with blue and purple rainbows. The rider strode towards him, black cloak billowing and feet making little clicking sounds on the cobbles. They were the only noises – silence clamped down on the square like great drifts of cotton wool.
The impressive effect was rather spoilt by a patch of ice.
OH, BUGGER.

In other news, I had a comdey fall off my bike today.
It all started while I was climbing a hill and the cars coming in the opposite direction were going very gingerly, then I noticed that my bike was skidding. It got to the point whereby I couldn't make progress so I dismounted and walked up the verge. Angry Saab woman driver behind me, attempted to haughtily drive off in a huff, only to do a massive wheel spin on the ice then the near side front wheel got grip and almost launched her into a hedge. Hee Hee :)
Anyway, so I am approaching a junction on the otherside, which I know is always dodgy so I attempt to slow down and dismount. I unclip my right foot just in case, when my bike falls left. So I am balancing hlaf on a falling bike and half on my right foot, which with my cycling shoe has very little grip. After much failing of arms. I detach my left foot from my bike now on the floor and pick the bike up. Much to the amusement of other drivers.

BBC News refuses to apologise for being a competent source of local news (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25725840).
Seriously, the people complaining. When was the last time they picked up their local rag? They're terrible. Dull reports, no style, and so many adverts. Ditto their websites. If I'm looking for info, would I rather go to Auntie, who provide it all in a clear, concise manner, or a local news service and be bombarded with pop ups and other assorted advertising, usually in the middle of a poorly written up story?
Wolfshade
01-14-2014, 05:47 AM
I for one would be sad to see my local news papers go, I use them for my guinea pigs and rabbits. Also to stuff in my shoes when they are wet (the shoes, not the news paper)
Ultimately, I have to agree. I am in the process of trying to sell my house and the one estate agent I was talking with about newspaper advertisements was saying that they hadn't considered local news to be cost-effective for a while, what with the ease and greater detail you can get online. They are even considering significant;y downgrading their own website since house portals get so much more traffic that it isn't worth the hosting costs.

So insurance companies aren't all bad, during our house move my wife managed to accidentally throw away my grandfathers diamond ring that I have had since I was 18. Don't ask me how. Anyway 4 weeks after making the claim and meeting a specialist jeweller it's replacement arrived in the post this morning. Whilst it's not the same as having my grandfathers ring back, the replacement is a pretty good copy. At over £2600 pounds though I think our premiums about to go up :D. Not exactly down to my emergency pants, but really should go.
Reading wise I'm set, as I have Going Postal, and mighty fine it is too.

Mark of Calth is a bit uneven, yes. There's a couple of really good stories in there, and also some other stuff.

I keep seeing people advocating vegan diets for cats and dogs and their animals ALWAYS look ill.
It's about the thing that makes me angriest on tumblr. I literally want to reach through the internet and throttle the selfish self rightous ****ers.
Apparently at minimum cats go blind and suffer kidney failure if you don't give them meat.

You could probably make non-meat based dried food that had all the necessary nutrients. I don't doubt it would be very expensive, but I don't see why you couldn't. People manage it. What they did was feed it human food and wonder why it got ill. Not that I in any way agree win forcing ideologies on animals who lack sentience, never mind empathy for their prey.

Vegan diets are idiotic. Just because you can theoretically get by without meat doesn't mean that ignoring one of the fundamental cornerstones of the human diet is good for you. It's like trying to use diesel in a gasoline engine, kinda. You're fooling yourself if you think it's actually healthy.

Every vegan I've ever met has had to take significant quantities of vitamin supplements, that should indicate something surely. They claim they get sick les but I notice that when they do get sick they get it much worse so you tell me which is better.

It reminds me of the whole anti-vaccine thing. I recall an article about a woman who was, growing up, a poster child for vegan-style healthy living (because of her parents, not necessarily of her own volition). 1000% vegitarian, no tv, regular exercise, no drugs of any sort including vaccines, etc.
She was also chronically sick. By the time she reached adulthood, she was violently allergic to basically any and all anti-bacterials because she got sick so frequently that she was on them so frequently she developed the allergies.
As a result, while she still raises her kids to be very, very health, she actually bothered to do the research and figure out, hey, maybe vaccines really are good for you overall, among other mistakes her parents made. Veganism strikes me as almost exactly the same thing, vodoo logic with mysticism and wavey fingers as a replacement for actual science and logic and data.
Incidentally, I recently found this article, which summarizes a number of the most recent diet studies that undermine a lot of 'traditional' diet knowledge, including some vegan myths like "excess protein is bad for you": http://authoritynutrition.com/how-to-win-an-argument-with-a-nutritionist/
Edit: My mom wants a kitten. I don't suppose you can mail them ;).

I saw a good chart of the difference vaccines have made to world health recently actually and some basic things like flu which used to kill tens of millions of people in epidemics now kills thousands or tens of thousands worldwide instead. Anyone who denies that vaccines don't work is insane, which isn't to say that somepeople don't have bad reactions to them.

It's not at the mo :) serial busy a work and stuff.
And on Veganism, it would appear it can be done without supplements. There are sects of (I think) Hinduism so committed to Veganism they don't eat root vegetables as pulling them up might kill an insect.
Though their diet is seriously rich in pulses, and thus protein!

Seen the banana version before. Someone came up with an interesting idea
Going back to earlier
I’m putting my cat on a vegan diet.
"how could you do that! that’s animal abuse"
No it’s not. a vegan-only diet is actually very healthy for them.
"cats are carnivores. they need to eat meat"
I know. that’s why it’s a vegan-only diet. I feed them only the finest vegans I can find.
