Did you go to the PS4 release mystery?

Mr Mystery
11-29-2013, 05:52 AM
Unfortunately not. Still digging out the financial mire!

But nearly there. 3 more pay packets having chunks sacrificed, but come March, I should wind up with around £800-900 a month disposable income, after rent, commute, pension, Sky, food, mobile bill and credit card bill.

Which is nice.

Psychosplodge

That sounds a good position to be in. Any idea if they did that give away you were on about at the London hmv?

Mr Mystery
11-29-2013, 05:57 AM
Nothing on the news about it so far, but then, HMV isn't what it was!

So, so looking forward to March, and being on an even keel at long last. Even looking at paying my council tax in a lump sum this year, as although it will leave me broke for that month, at least it will be done and dusted there and then.

Oh, and standard payrise in April..... Hoping for 4-5% this year!

As you can imagine, I'm a bit (big bit) of a Druss fan. What you say is true. In his books the "villain" isn't always so easy to hate as Gemmell always seems to give the antagonist and good back story and a reason for why he or she is doing what they are.
Evil isn't always easy to spot, look at the band mates in the Lost Prophets. How long had the band been together ?

I love Gemmell's books. They are all pretty similar, same sorts of characters, same sorts of themes, but it is exactly the way I like my fantasy books, so I don't care. I have all of his books, and have read each one at least three times. need to get the new book by Stella Gemmell as well, see what she is doing now.

Amazon to use mini-drones to deliver product to customers (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/amazon-39-hopes-drone-deliveries-094714181--finance.html)

Online retailer Amazon hopes to have mini drones delivering packages to customers in just 30 minutes, its chief executive has claimed.
During a TV appearance in the United States, Jeff Bezos played a video showing the tiny robotic devices, known as octocopters, which pick up items in small yellow buckets and whiz them through the air.
"I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," Mr Bezos told CBS television's 60 Minutes show.
"We can do half-hour delivery ... and we can carry objects, we think, up to 5lbs, which covers 86% of the items that we deliver."
Lot of obstacles to overcome, would be nifty when it happens though. A lot further off than the five years they estimate though, in my opinion.

Though sadly there is no evidence that pre-Christian pagans ever bought trees indoors. They more than likely used holly and mistletoe for warding of evil spirits and fertility and such like, but why would they bring a whole tree in? This is one tradition that probably only goes as far back as the Victorian revival of Christmas.

Wolfshade

eldargal
12-04-2013, 03:38 AM
It's true the inside thing seems to be a Renaissance-early modern invention but the tree itself is almost certainly a pagan inclusion. I'd be more interested in how enforceable and legal the 'Christians only' thing is, it would be interesting what would happen if an inter-faith group or some such wanted to buy some to celebrate in a multi-faith sense and were knocked back. Also surely there are laws against that kind of discrimination in the US (where I assume the picture originates).

Faith has a purpose. Faith can give people strength when they need it most. I've seen faith in action, and it's a beautiful thing.

Religion, on the other hand, has caused all sorts of problems throughout history.

Two of the three biggest mass murders in history were atheists, iirc. When it comes to violence, religion is an excuse, not a reason.

Edit: also, I would define religion as a set of spiritual beliefs. Atheism qualifies, it's just somewhat unique in that it believes there is no spirituality, unlike most other religions.

Wildeybeast

Atheism is obviously a belief but it is not a religion. It lacks any of the distinguishing features that most sociologist would apply to a religion. No element of the supernatural. No rites or rituals. No creed of belief. No moral code. And so on. At a push you could make a case for saying Humanism is a religion, but not plain atheism.

Mr Mystery
12-04-2013, 01:39 PM
Weigh them against a duck.

Hope you're not including Mr Hitler in that. He was most definitely a self identifying Christian....

Wildeybeast

At the start. Later he tried to set up his own wacky religion to embed his master race ideas. The upper echelons of the **** party were 'uncomfortable' at how closely tied to Judaism Christianity is. I'm also fairly certain that most Christians would argue that Hitler hadn't fully grasped the finer points of Jesus' message.

Mr Mystery

Hate to say it, but same goes for a great many Christians, particularly it would seem in the US. Far more into hatred and finger pointing than loving their fellow man.

Indeed, seems Rush Limbaugh (apologies for this low blow) has accused The Pope of being a communist.

Can only conclude Mr Limbaugh has either never read The Bible, or only the bits which preach hatred.

Wonderwoman cast in the new Superman/Batman film (http://www.newsarama.com/19722-superman-batman-s-wonder-woman-cast.html)

Not that it seems she's getting her own film yet....

And to be honest, having been thoroughly underwhelmed by Man of Steel, and less than convinced Ben Affleck can carry off Batman, likely never will, as this film may just bury DC films for a good long while.

Probably the latter. The religious right tends to pick and choose which parts of the Bible to listen to, and which to ignore. The left does it, too, but I agree with their ethics, so they get a pass. ;)

Surely that is a compliment, after all communism (in its pure form) is all about everyone working together and sharing what they have. Each contributing to society with what skills they have.

The meeting went a lot like this:

Me: "Currently I can do [task], can I do that with the new system?"
Them: "No"

Common sense prevails again...

That pretty much covers it. The only other one is putting up lots of shiny things and sparkly lights to remind the lazy sun what its supposed to be doing. Bringing greenery indoors helps keep the evil spirits away and/or reminds the lazy plants what to do, but isn't really related to the sun-bringing back rituals.

Exactly. Damn lazy star, all it does is shine, and then it doesn't even manage that right half the time...

Hitman was on tv this evening, I think it is underrated. certainly not a great Hitman film, but a good hitman film, if you know what I mean.

Agent 47: Because that suitcase perfectly holds my Blaser Sniper Rifle, two .45s and a gag for irritating, talkative little girls like yourself. You want me to stop and get it out?
Nika Boronina: I don't know - you think we have time for foreplay?

to be honest it was exactly what I expected. I said before it ever came out they would get Agent 47 wrong, but would probably make a good action film.

The end mission of Hitman 2 was legendary. Stalking the church with any weapon you want at your disposal, assassinating henchmen who thought they were better than you, listening to the growing panic... gave me a wonderful feeling of superiority.

not really. I quite liked the Prince of Persia film. it captured a lot of what made Sands of Time excellent, but missed a few notes. there was no reason at all to make him some sort of Aladdin street orphan character. His aristocratic upbringing is one of the things that makes the banter so great in the game.

Argh!

Nothing is so frustrating as talking with the council.

So at first I am trying to acertain whose boundary is whose, I do not hold my title deeds on my person so after talking with the coucnil's property records, which didn't hold the information, the helpful person at the land registry who told me what I suspected, the left hand fence is not mine.

Huzzah! It is the left hand fence which is broken.

So, I speak to the housing repairs department, apparently, I cannot log a call to report the broken fence. Nor can they tell me if it has been done.

So they transfer me to the estates management, first they ask me why I am talking with them about this, and I explain that I was transfered from repairs, then they tell me they can't tell me as it is covered by the data protection act. I respond, by asking what personal information is being held? They were fuzzy. They then told me that they were not responsible for the repairs, to which I responded, well either you are wrong or your website is and quoted the relevant section of the website, he then agreed that they are responsible. He then tried to tell me that it was on the wrong side, (having not mentioned what side it was previously I was a little puzzled) so I responded that having spoken with the land registry and confirmed that it was not my boundary fence.

Argh!

So the council is quite happy to acknowledge that the repairs need to be done, but I can't do it. So if I get injured or my property is damanged I will be looking at BCC for compensation.

casually challenged a friend to a game tomorrow using my dark elves, having now acquired everything I need. Unfortunately I had glossed over the fact that only 24 of the 125 models needed were actually built. 40 down, 60 to go

Wow. Superglue factory's might just need to build a shrine to you.

So I had a fun game going tonight. 3 person FFA (Using modified Crusade rules and custom deployment) and my Dark Angel Tactical Squad took down 3 terminators in overwatch. Second only to the Termigaunt that killed an Assault Terminator (SS&TH) in overwatch with a Fleshborer. It was not the SM player's night in assault and was cut to ribbons. He still managed to come in ahead of me, but not ahead of the double Flyrant wielding Tyranids. Gonna have to finish the last bits of my ADL for next time.

With Stronghold Assault just making all my summer fortifications game legal - I'm taking a more WW1 view of my Death Guard.

My new challenge: how little can I move and win a game? I want all fortifications, my boys in dirty white and green manning the trenches, and something super cheap to sally forth and grab objs late game. Then shell em into nothing while I enjoy a gin & anything over a couple of hours.

Speaking of which as it's off topic:

Combine to your liking... Mmmmmmm!

Tsk tsk tsk. Poor Dear Leader.

You drink Gin with Tonic Water. Not club soda. Whoever lounged upon a colonial veranda in the noon day sun, demanding gin and soda to accompany their Tiffin?

You can use soda water to top up combinations of gin and other spirits/liqueurs when you don't want tonic water flavour in it.

Pffrt. Gin and Tonic, with or without Bitters.

Reminds of 1997, and when I was shown how to make a proper Pink Gin by a very pleasant guest at the hotel (never work in a hotel. It's poorly paid, and utterly thankless which is why I remember this polite gent). Few drops of angostura bitters, swirled round the glass to coat. Ask if sir would like with our without. If without, pour out excess from glass. Then proceed with typical g&t.

Brave is awesome

the game against wood elves did not go well. I think wood elves are exceedingly well equipped for killing other elves, last few games (using high elves then dark elves) have not gone well at all. It is certainly possible to build a wood elf killing list, playing them at their own game. but I can't afford to buy the stuff needed. both my elf armies were designed primarily to fight undead and dwarfs, the 'standard' sort of army you see in a white dwarf. ie. blocks of infantry, few missile units, war machines, a monster. wood elves made up of small missile units zipping all over the place absolutely decimate a T3 low save army. at some point I will have to invest in fast cavalry, scouts etc. but right now I am just going to have to try and avoid playing them.

Mr Mystery
12-08-2013, 03:40 PM
I can fix that.

Buy Ogre army.

Sit on their girly little heads.

Wood Elves do not like Ogres! Can't cause enough wounds quick enough, and then into combat, and it's all over bar the kicking, screaming, and of course eating.

Kirsten

I already have an ogre army, and a chaos army. both can stomp wood elves nicely, laughing at their puny arrows. elves however suffer massively against massed accurate bowfire, expecially S4 bows.

Mr Mystery
12-08-2013, 03:44 PM
Indeed they do.

Though the common MSU is one of the things that irritates me about playing against Wood Elves. It's really hard to make what combats your can get into pay off.

Kirsten
12-08-2013, 03:46 PM
exactly, you end up chasing units all over the place that wont actually stand still for a round of combat, fleeing as a reaction etc. then the tree man stomps all over whatever survives the arrow

Mr Mystery
12-08-2013, 03:52 PM
Yup. Can't blame the players, but it does make me look forward to their new book more than their players do!

As an aside, watching Game of Thrones and I don't get why Brienne of Tarth is meant to be a minger.

I really rather fancy her myself.

Kirsten
12-08-2013, 03:54 PM
I do like the fact that they play differently to other armies, it just needs a dedicated army to fight them and I can't afford it, which makes the game a bit pointless. It was immediately apparent from deployment that I had no chance of winning.

Mr Mystery
12-08-2013, 03:56 PM
Never, ever won against Woodies with my Dark Elves, though seeing as I seriously favoured Chariots and Monsters in those days (still do :p) it was hardly surprising!

Kirsten
12-08-2013, 03:58 PM
yup, some shades and dark riders would do a good job, some cold one knights, harpoon chariot for tree killing...

basically everything I don't have... :p

Casting :) Gwendoline Christie is a real stunner. Maybe they should have cast Olga Kurkulina instead... although she's got a certain je ne sais quoi too

I guess it is that the men in Game of Thrones are basically a bunch of tossers who wouldn't know a good looking woman even if she waltzed up and kicked them in the nuts (except for Tyrion, of course).

A sonic screwdriver remote control. Sounds cool for you Who fans, but the advert describes it as "fashionable", now I know my idea of fashionable is jogging shorts and t-shirt, but I'm quite sure this isn't fashionable. :p

Treekin and dryads disagree with you there. The best wood elf army is one that features as few wood elves as possible.
