go pick it up today. Supermarkets started selling it today because games usually come out on a friday, so a saturday release just confused them. so Nintendo got in touch and said 'eh, what the hell, go mad.' we have been selling it all day in Game.

Amazon...
managed to get a good twelve hours in, six gym badges about a hundred "caught" (includes evolved) over two hundred seen. and about ¥400k...
Not a bad start... The french professor is getting on my tits though ¬_¬

Which begs the question, if any of you guys were to cosplay a character, who do you most resemble to pull it off ?

That cosplay is awesome, but I can't imagine many venues allowing the horse...

Also, got my World of Darkness game underway last night, with a prelude session for two of the players (one of whom I used to live with until a fairly major falling out. Nice to be rebuilding bridges!).

Stuff to do with Macedonia and treasure maps, found at the end of WW1...and a mysterious crown...which is nothing like the story I intended, but I just went with it! Looking forward to next Sunday's session with those two, and kicking off the main game in a few weeks.

And the McCann story continues to trundle on, and on, and on, and on....because it seems everyone has forgotten the moral of the story is not to leave your kids unattended in a hotel room with the door left open whilst you nick off to dinner at a 'nearby' restaurant with your chums to get tiddly......unless of course you're upper middle class types with friends in the media, because then horrendous child neglect is somehow fine. Especially when you put it into the context that you've done it lots of times before, and nothing untoward happened.

KaiZie
10-14-2013, 06:26 AM
Had this conversation with a few chums the other night that have kids, also intermingled with the mother that lost her child to a chorded blind while she left her unattended to take a leak.

Our conclusion was that many moons ago, it was acceptable to leave your child to mind itself for a few minutes here and there. e.g. leave a child in the car asleep while you pop into the shops or something. But now-a-days it just shouldnt be done. McCann is a prime example of deadful parenting. It's horrific to think you'd leave a child anywhere unattended even in your own home given the dangers that are lurking pretty much everywhere, but on holiday? It's unthinkable. I know I would never do it, and, as controversional as it may be, I think they deserve to go through to set an example to the rest of the world. Maddie didn't choose to be left alone, she was forced into the situation by bad parenting.

Mr Mystery
10-14-2013, 06:28 AM
Yup.

I mean, I still have empathy with them for what they're going through. I'm not a parent myself, but I imagine they're beating themselves up over it. But....absolutley no sympathy for them. It was a moronic thing to do, and it really, really honks me off that they continually play the victim, acting as if their actions were totally reasonable.

eldargal
10-14-2013, 06:31 AM
They are victims though, not only of their own stupidity but they were quite deliberately persecuted by the local police who decided they were guilty and refused to look elsewhere not only during the crucial first few days after the girl went missing but for a long time after. Had they reacted professionally instead of brutalising the parents they may have recovered her before any harm was done. The stupidity of the parents was exacerbated by the incompetence of the police, the parents are not solely responsible here.

KaiZie

Yes but if prevention fails minimising the damage is still better than not. Regardless of the parents incompetence the police could potentially have saved the girl had they acted professionally. they did not, so they condemned her as surely as her parents incompetence.

I couldn't agree more. there's been a lot of failures throughout this whole event, it should set an example of What not to do, but will undoubtably never be resolved or looked at again to learn from mistakes

Kaptain Badrukk

Neglect, either by the parents or police, is never excusable. The only victim I see here is the child.
Were the parents the major target of the investigation in error? Possibly yes.
Are they fit parents? Possibly no.
Is that kid in real trouble or dead? Definitely yes.
Who, therefore definitely deserves my sympathy and is definitely a victim.

But one more thing on the McCann story....does anyone feel it more than slightly extracts the urine that at a time of severe cutbacks in Police budgets, they're fart arsing around in Portugal, due to the incompetence of Police and Parents both? Just. Drop. It.

Chances of her being found alive? Absolutlely minimal. Chances of her being found at all, not exactly a great deal higher. Cold case. Just leave it be.

One of the best abstracts I have read for a little while:

The feasibility of using lightning as a renewable source of energy is studied. It was found that, while a good idea in practice, efficiently converting electricity into a useful product presents a problem as well as the rarity of lightning strikes themselves. It was calculated that even in a location that experiences lots of lightning, it would only get struck on average once per year. Due to this, it is unlikely that the power obtained from lightning itself would outweigh the expense of building a facility to efficiently harvest it.

KaiZie
10-14-2013, 07:43 AM
Haha, that's epic. So basically it would work if we could gather more lightning?

When Good Charlotte write a song about a subject where they aren't entirely hypocrtical, they'll still suck, but at least they won't be contrived anymore. The big tossers that they are.

So, to sum up....you can have Popular Punk, as in Punk that is a popular example of it's genre. This is relative, and will always exist.

You cannot however, have mass produced Pop Punk, on account it is the antithesis of the Punk ethos. Like Good Charlotte. The big tossers that they are.

1.Hill Sisters – "Happy Birthday" (1893). Estimated earnings: $50 million

In 1893, the Hill sisters needed a song for their kindergarten class to sing on birthdays. Fast forward 120 years and "Happy Birthday" is by far the richest and most profitable song of all time. The Ownership of "Happy Birthday" has changed hands a few times in the last 100 years. Music holding company Warner Chappell bought the rights for $15 million in 1990. Today the song brings in $2 million a year in royalties ($5000 per day). It costs $25,000 to use the song in a movie or TV show which explains why you often see actors sing an odd, amalgamated version on screen. This also explains why chain restaurants sing their own custom songs for a guest's birthday. You may not even realize, but it's technically illegal to sing the song in a large group of unrelated people (like an office party) without paying a royalty to the current copyright holder Warner Music Group (which is owned by a private corporate conglomerate called Access Industries). The copyright for "Happy Birthday" expires in 2030 in the United States and 2016 in the European Union, at which point we can all finally sing Happy Birthday without writing a royalty check.

Since in modern society profitability = popularity, by your definition this is the best piece of music ever written.

So, while looking at punk as a whole, the bands previously mentioned are not, by the definition of punk music, Punk. They do however cross into Pop-punk and Punk-Rock. Punk was, as a whole, a social and musical movement, personified greatly by The s3x pistols.

When we start to look at bands such as Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Blink 182 and so on, we are neglating sub-genre a tad. These bands are a fusion of 2 genres, rock and punk to produce their own style of music. This can be seen throughout music as a whole with bands such as Mumford and Sons, crossing the barrier of Pop-folk-rock.

Where as true punk bands still exsist, such as Rancid, Good Charlotte etc are not punk by very definition, but in fact, punk-rock, or, if you prefer, pop-punk

As hospitals refuse to check legality to be in UK.
And rarely attempt to recover costs owed by foreign nationals, how can they actually publish figures?

Well indeed. But it makes the right wing hysteria over it laughable, as what cannot be measured, cannot be quantified as a threat....

And yeah. 600,000 migrants not working. Shame that includes kids and dependants and that....indeed, only 38,000 migrants on benefits.... Government unable to explain that one away....

I don't know, but with hundreds of thousands of ex pats in Europe it's quite likely at least some of them are benefiting from their new countries of residence in some way that takes the burden of the British taxpayer.

Changing subject, anyone else noticed that every popular American television show starts getting bashed during its second and third season before people settle down? It's like people have to react against their praise of the first series by being really, really critical of the subsequent two before they just get over. I've seen it happen with Mad Men, Dexter and a bunch of others over the years and now Homeland. It's really odd.

Well yes but it happened in season 2 with Dexter which was quite good. It just seems to be this odd trend, like reviewers and a certain number of fans suddenly have to turn on the show. Hipster effect? Genuine drop on quality which is remedied through taking the criticism onboard? Who knows.

I will say that Dexter ****ed up royally when they pissed all over years of character development and Fridged his wife because the creators couldn't handle the direction they had taken the show. Cretins.

I think there are certain issues with the benefits system. not specifically to do with immigrants per se, but the fact that people can move around and not actually be re-tested. so people can come to the Isle of Man from the UK, and if they received benefits over there, they get them over here without being tested at all. I got annoyed once too when an older couple came to the counter, they were 60, just moved to the island and were both on disability living allowance. you have to have lived here five years before you can claim a pension, so they had moved here five years before retirement age. get disability living allowance for five years, then pension for the rest of their lives. at no point will they work here. honestly I found that a bit annoying.

hey we tax loads of people, just not as much as you lot too. I am immensely happy to see both Obama and the Conservatives coming forward now and saying that actually the Isle of Man is not some terrible tax haven. Having worked in financial compliance it drove me mad when people did that, the Isle of Man's tax laws are far more stringent than those of the UK. The UK may not like people living over here and paying less tax, but that is none of their business.

Do they not get reassessed every 12months or so like they would here?

they don't necessarily get assessed every 12 months in the UK either, they can get a lifetime award in either place. there are of course disabilities which will never get better, but we saw plenty that did. they would get long term awards, often life, then be treated/recover, and not say anything and stay on benefits. I would like to see a system whereby people who could get themselves better, but refuse to do so don't get benefit too. we had an older woman who was massively overweight and getting DLA because she couldn't walk due to arthritis, if she had actually just lost weight she would have been perfectly fine. her doctor repeatedly reported that her issues were all weight related, and there was nothing we could do about it.

We need more of a 'social contract' feel to the state handouts. And seriously, stopping calling them 'benefits' should be a start. You shouldn't 'benefit' from being unemployed! Splitting hairs I know, but hey, appearances and that.

DLA. If it's because you're a big fattyboomboom, you get that, as long as you sign up to a weight loss regime, monitored by your local quack. Not the 'lose half your weight in 6 weeks' tripe we see on the telly, but a gradual weight and diet control plan, to the point where you are able to work again. Nobody should be paid by the state just to shovel pies into their cavernous gob all day!

It's because they insist on applying business model methodology to public services.
We need to shake the illusion that the big business model of doing things is the "best" one.
It works for a very specific cause, to make 1% of the people involved VERY wealthy.
And there's no argument that it's fantastic at it.
I'm not sure that the methodologies from that model should be applied to say, keeping 100% of the nation healthy.
That just doesn't add up.

yes at this point everyone is reassessed in the UK. I was highlighting issues from when I was there which was 2009. the ATOS bunch are making things far worse. the system is in desperate need of an overhaul, reassessments are vital, but because they are trying to force genuinely disabled people back to work, they have ensured everybody hates them. combine that with the general public opinion that if tories touch benefits at all it is because they 'hate the poor' and all in all a horrendously unfit for purpose scheme is left as is. I am classed as long term unemployed, because whilst I work part time, it is only eight hours a week at the moment, so I am still on job seekers. I apply for more than the minimum number of jobs each week I need to, I am registered with every agency on the island, I have been told I haven't got enough recent experience to do an office job at any level, I am apparently 'too old' at 28 for a trainee or graduate position, my degree isn't good enough, I have too much management experience to get a low level sales/admin job, not enough for a managerial position, the job centre turned me down for funding to retrain. yet on friday the 'long term unemployment officer' who is supposed to help me find work, screamed abuse at me for fifteen full minutes calling me a benefits scrounger, abuser of her taxes, lazy, complacent etc. for not working full time.

The inevitable outcome of a system in which people are being forced off unemployment benefits when there aren't enough jobs to go around.

Tory employment policy is literally magical thinking. Here's a fact for you. The economy was growing comfortably under the last Labour government (powered by asset bubbles we now know to be a sham, but it was growing). However, the private sector didn't grow very much. This wasn't because it was smothered in red-tape, because the last Labour government was actually very pro-business (this is yer post-Thatcher consensus you hear about).

So if the private sector wasn't growing in The Best Of Times, which the pre-crash economy pretty much was, at least as regards growth and the conditions for growth, why the hell is it suddenly going to grow in the middle of a chuffing global financial crisis and attendant recession? Just because the public sector's been shrunk? It doesn't work like that, and never has.

And now of course we have Labour telling us they'll hammer people on benefits even harder than the Tories. Oh lordy. Let the race to the bottom begin in earnest!

But Dredd wasn't that much of a flop. Made on a modest budget, and is in profit. Surely they could repeat that, especially with the word out.

I guess it just baffles the US critics, and some of the audience. For a horrendously violent film, it's remarkably restrained (no inexplicable explosions). And I find the criticism of Dredd as a faceless fascist...well...yes...yes he is. Might help to read the source material before deciding that's a downside to the character, rather than the entire intent. When Dredd says 'I am the law', it's not from ego....

6666 = 44 * (7*44 - 5) / 2

it is quite boring I think. Nonagonals are quite nice as they follow a pattern of two odd numbers then two even numbers, I have no practical purposes for them.

6666 is also the number of verses not in the koran.

Unlike Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Russell Brand and Lee Nelson, who all have an annoying stage presence (often, it's just due to being inexplicably on the stage, again) and absolutely no talent for being funny.

I was read to, and encouraged to read. I remember always wanting Grandad Robinson to babysit, as every time, without fail, involved a trip to Safeways, snackycakefoodcrisps, fizzy pop.....and a brand new ladybird book, usually He-Man or Transformers.

Sadly, secondary school curtailed my love of reading with some dire books, like Buddy, Z for Zachariah and Empty World. Grim reading indeed, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone!
