View Full Version : Wolf Guard with Scouts

One of the units Wolf Guard may join (as de facto sergeants) is Wolf Scouts. The only exception made in the codex is that models with jump packs or on bikes may not join scouts (and now I'm spacing whether Terminator armor is on that list). I would assume that since WG can act, essentially, as sergeants for Wolf Scout packs, that they can infiltrate and use other scout rules when they join that unit. Nowhere in the codex does it address the issue, however. So what do you think? Does a WG added to a Wolf Scout unit cost the scouts their special rules, or does he get to use those rules?
My own feeling is that WG would not be allowed to join scouts if they were not intended to deploy as scouts - the ONLY reason to add a WG to the unit in that case would be to give snipers some support. At the same time, an independent character could not deploy with scouts without the Saga of the Hunter.

I think that they can join and use infiltrate, outflank and behind enemy lines. They be become part of the squad and benefit from the unit rules unless otherwise stated as in the blood claw charging rule. Also in the BRB it specifically states that IC do not benefit from rules of this sort, so it can be assumed that non IC joining a unit do benefit from them. I can't think of any other non-IC model that can join a unit but that's what the rules say. This is just another example of the sloppy rules in this codex. Maybe they will address this in the FAQ.

There aren't any rules for how upgrade characters gain/loose special rules. Some people will point to the Independent Character rules, but they are irrelevant because upgrade characters (like wolf guard, Arjac, Telion, etc) are not Independent Characters.
This is something you have to house rule, as there are no official rules dealing with the situation.

Unit upgrades = they can still infiltrate as normal ... in my opinion anyway. Agree with Darklink that the IC rules for joining are irrelevant.

Actually, it's not really clear whether he does so or not. I've read over several of those arguments, and haven't seen anyone come up with a satisfactory argument one way or another.
I'll point out the majority of the argument against Telion not granting his unit Stealth is that if Telion were an Independent Character, the IC rules would not grant the squad Stealth. The IC rules are irrelevant, though, as Telion is not an IC.
Now, I'm not saying that Telion necessarily does grant his unit stealth, simply that the rules are ambiguous to the situation. Same with Wolf Guard in Scouts. The rules simply don't cover it.

excellent point -- but you would grant that HE gets all of the scout squad's rules, right...
