I had originally posted this question on another Forum, but wanted your opinions as well:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

A younger 40k Player has spent all his High School Graduation Money on a Warhound Titan.

He spent all Summer assembling and painting the War Machine.

The first time it hits the table.... In a recent Apocalypse Game, your Hierophant is within Charge Distance of it. You KNOW what the outcome will be.

Do you shoot something else and 'forget' to assault the Warhound... Or is it all-out no-holds barred WAR ! ! ! (?)

Thanks for your replies!

WAR!!! If he can't take a loss, he should not be playing wargames.

It depends on the person. If it seems like they'd take it hard, I'd probably forget. In fact, I'd probably point out beforehand that he might want to back his titan up a little.

comment on how beautifly his titans painted, tell him about the painting contest nearby, Then munch that titan!:D

It depends on
A) how well you know the guy
B) how much you like the guy
C) If you think the guy can take it on the chin or if he'll cry like a girl.

You could always shoot the hell out of it then forget that you can shoot AND assault. If you're still there next turn and he hasnt moved away then he's fair game.

Admittedly, given how fast gargantuan creatures etc move, the set up for apocalypse is a little stupid.

In the grim darkness of the school lunch room there is only war!

If he spent his money on a bullet magnet, wail away. It's Apoc. Don't come to the batte unless you intend to fight. I always attack the great gargant first. You can't help but see it and want to shoot it before it goes bowling for tanks.

I would probably ignore it first time around. Let the kid have his fun with his new shiny model. Any subsequent games... TAKE IT DOWN! ;)

Let me see - did I spend all that time unpacking an apocalypse army's worth of miniatures just to let someone D-plate them all off the table again?

No.

If he's bringing the Heat he'd better be ready to get some back. Can't do the time don't do the crime etc.

And isn't a high school graduate 17-18? 13-14 years old get the softly treatment, not people old enough to afford a titan.

Sounds like "New model Syndrom"

Its new, its shiney and it will die easily

I tend to take it as a compliment if my new shiny gets blasted into oblivion the first time I field it. Almost like an initiation ritual. It also means the enemy is afraid of it, and makes me feel all the better when they fail to take it down.

You guys are dogs...I cannot be believe that anyone would not give the kid a break or two to use his big new toy. If you are so serious about winning that you cannot let a young player have a bit of fun, you are in the wrong hobby...cause letting the kid get a couple of rounds of shooting in from one Warhound really is not going to hurt anyone. He will figure out before long that the Warhounds die easy anyway...so let him have some fun.

It would be different if it were some kind of tournament with prizes and such. Apocalypse is supposed to be fun...

It depends a lot on the player. Some people would be super excited to play a Warhound for the first time and might just looking for a friendly game to try out the new model. Others would be insulted if you treated them with kid gloves.

I'd let him off the first couple of times he fielded it. But I care less about winning and more about having fun battles.

Destroy his model?

I don't understand what this has to do with Gamer Courtesy? Your thread title has nothing to do with your situation.

1) You tell me this kids life story as if I walk in the store, and suddenly know it in real life. I wouldn't, so why would I hesitate to kill his model?

2) How about some courtesy to me? I spent money on that Heirophant Bio Titan, and painted it. Should my opponents let my Titan run rampant??

So what do we do, have our Titans ignore each other all game?

Ivarr I'm not a dog you chod. I would now proceed to give you exacting detail as to your genetic make-up but don't want to get in trouble - suffice to say Chernobyl is in there somewhere.

As I previously stated, if he is old enough to receive high school graduation money, he is old enough to be respected as a player and played to the maximum of my abilities. And a Warhound is not exactly an entry level model - he muist have been around the hobby a bit to even contemplate building this multi-part resin monster.

Jog on numbwit.

Cultural difference here. You Guys leave school at 18 and then maybe move to college. Over here we leave school at 16 and go to work. An 18 year old is very much an adult in our eyes.

Most of life's lessons are hard ones............

In general: NO. Tyranids know no mercy, so showing mercy would be unfitting to fluff.

If I am haveing first turn it is totally his own fault if the titan is placed within core striking distance of my Hierophant AND has nothing inbetween to protect it. If I start I have placed my hierophant before he placed his warhound.

To be a sucessfull princeps you have to know that your titan (unless its a khornate or ork one) is NOT made for apocalypse siced frontline close combat. He can stomp some backfield deep strikers into oblivion which are not equipped properly (termies without chainfists, droppoding marines, stormtroopser,...) but certainly not other close combat titans.

It is chindishly easy in an apocalypse environment to protect your warhound from a frontal Hierophant: park a squad or two of sentinels inbetween as well as a handfull of rhinos (or jsut stay out of range).

If I like the person and don't think they are a powergamer (some people are dumb enough to think a titan is default win because they are OTT³. those people are usually spotted by fitting two twin laserdestructors on their warhound ands two tripple laserdestructors and one twin laserdestructor onto reavers. D plate heaven) I will tell them what my hierophant is capable of when I see them set up near it ("Kid, you see this big spider-bug? It may seem equally siced and thinner than your cute imperial titan over there but it is nearly twice its points and will smoke it in melee in one turn if you deploy within 20-30" and take a turn more if it only can shoot with its 48" weapons after moving 12". Take this into account when deploying.")

Usually people will then go all ego and think I'm just scared of the titan... more food for my lil' bug. People have grown to realice that I'm not trying to manipulate them into something when I explain the rules. Those who dont trust me only deserve what is coming at them.

The things I will not do to non-wanabe powergamer people who bring their titan for the first time is:
dropping 100 myetic spores onto them (this IS fun... s5 +2d6 and then a bucketload of bioacid mines 3+2d6 afterwards).
flanking my hierphants/hierodules when they are parked at a save distance and so showed respect to my melee monsters.
harridan-assolt them on my first reserve turn

those ways to kill a titan are reserved to those who I deem worthy oponents :)

Gargantuan creatures can tank shock non superheavy vehicles out of the way - you'd need to park a superheavy in its way to block it.

I'd have to agree with you, Oni, since he is young and spent all that time, money and effort on it. I would go easy on him the first time, that way he can go home with a good feeling that he didn’t waste all his time or money and at least got some enjoyment out of it. However, the next time he used it in an apoc game all bets are off and I would do my best to take it out.
