So far I haven't been able to get a decisive, informed answer to this question. If I proxy the WHFB vortex tentacle beast as my soulgrinder, how do I account for the difference in target silhouette presented to my opponent? While the front of the SG model is shallow and wide, the front of the VTB is narrow and long. I got a SG base (yes, they come with one in the box) that I was thinking of basing my VTB on, but it will still look odd, as there will be significant bare base surface on both sides of the model due to different model dimensions. However, this base would better represent GW's intended model dimensions for the SG for base-to-base purpose, such as assault. Would this be acceptable in one of the more official tournaments?

Thanks!

Personally if your whole army is well themed with appropriate conversions etc I would have no problem with this, as long as it's obvious you haven't done it to gane a deliberate advantage.
As for if it's ok in a tournement, if it's a big enough difference in size that your asking the question here then you should definitely ask the TO before you turn up on the day. Again I think you will most likely get a similar answer although some TO's will differ with their opinions.

I would have thought you could always stick it on a base that looks right for the model, and if it is a smaller area than the base that the model it is 'counting as' has, get a 'tray' that the base you give it will fit into. Make it up to correct dimensions for the official base size for the sake of competitive tournaments ... just a bit of mdf / plywood would be fine.
