I knew there was good reason for shipping all those religious weirdos off to the land of turkeys.

Never really got the full taboo of cannabilism...

I mean sure, not as a diet of choice. I don't think anyone really fancies a 'McDave' burger. But if its human, or starvation, I wouldn't think twice!

It's not great, in the long run. It allows certain diseases to become endemic. There are a lot of prionic conditions, for example, that can really screw up your society that are only possible with wide-scale cannibalism.

In the short term, though... yeah, it's better than dying, and I also don't see why it's so terribly awful.

That's why we beat the british. We had the will to do what they wouldn't. Or have you never seen the usual suspects (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnGo6Qm0Wt8)?

We have better camouflage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sxlbHaErRk)than everyone else, too (slightly nsfw, and inappropriate for anyone who doesn't like guns, violence, or 'MERICA!!!).

Mmmmm. Them's good eatin'!!

What I find surprising is that people can actually be surprised about cannibalism. Just about every culture on the planet has had a history of it at one time or another. I'm especially amused at how certain anthropologists actively try to ignore signs of cannibalism amongst Natives in North America. Cannibalism was practiced wholesale in South America, and guess what? North America wasn't any different. Hell, my mom used to talk about things she'd heard happening out on the reservation when she was growing up, and that was in the 30's.

You shouldn't eat predators on the basis that they have higher concentrations of toxins in their body from the low levels herbivores pick up.
Apparently dolphin meat is radioactive...

No we were busy with our hobby of defending mainland europe from dictators, just this time you didn't exist to come join in the glory at the end. In reality the rebels never really faced first rate troops.

I think you missed the self-depreciating joke that was buried in my comment ;).

Of course the reconstructions of the girl's face are misleading. They show her as healthy, well fed and well groomed. If they wanted to show what she probably really looked like at the time of her death, they'd have to make her face more wizen and skull-like, and her hair probably a bit more stringing.

.....

And since we're on the topic, thought I share some goofy things I came up with:

They talked about that. Her bones suggested that she had been well-fed and healthy at at least one point in her life.

Hmmmmmmm the "other" white meat. If I had been in that situation with no food, I think I could have lasted a good couple of hours before considering my next door neighbour as dinner.

And I think we should all be thankful to our ancestors for not evolving to be made from tasty bacons. Unlike those silly piggies!

Though there doesn't seem to be much suggestion that they killed her to eat, the main signs of trauma are from the butchery which was probably (hopefully) post mortem. Giving they were dropping like flies, it seems more likely they would eat the dead, rather than sacrifice a nice juicy young girl. For a start you would need her for breeding if the colony survived.

Well, the question is, were they trying to recreate her face as she was when alive - during the greater part of her life - or immediately before death? Usually, I think that scientists and sociologists find the former more interesting than the latter.

Certainly more palatable for the public than some starving wretch. I know which I would rather eat.

You know, when I was in my first year of teaching, I had a dream that:
A) There was a solar eclipse.
B) California was doing rolling blackouts (they've been known to do this sometimes in the summer to save the power grid).
C) All my students had become cannibals.

So, during my lesson, the lights would periodically go out, and when the came back on there would be fewer and fewer children in the classroom... all of them looking at me hungrily.

Then I woke up.

That's the only way we'll ever get manageable class sizes.

I'm married to a teacher. That's normal.
