Architect Paolo Soleri died yesterday of natural causes. Don't know who that is? If you've ever heard the word, "arcology" he's the guy that created the term. His big idea was to create cities that are condensed into a form more akin to a 3D sculpture, optimized so that anyone could walk anywhere within the city, eliminating the need for cars, public transportation, parking lots and a plethora of what he thought of as wasted space. In that light, he could be thought of as the father of the 40K hive city.
His one and only attempt to put his vision into practice is the artist community outside Prescott Arizona called "Arcosanti." I've been there a couple times. Basically, it's a half-built throw-back hippie commune, and by calling it "half-built" I am being overly generous.
