Here's a scenario I had the other night. A squad of 20 boys are completely surrounding a daemon prince. When my nob squad goes to assault, they make the range to the daemon prince but none of them can touch it b2b because of all the boys. My friend said that I automatically fail the assault. Is this true?

Yes that is right. If the initial charger can't get into base contact then the charge fails

Do you have a page reference for that? I have only found on page 22 under failed charge: "if the initial charger is found to be further than its charge range from the enemy, the charge fails and no models are moved." But my roll was far enough to reach the enemy unit and my unit was within 2" of a friendly model so they were able to attack if allowed to assault. If you get a page number, I'd appreciate it!

Check out page 20 in the rulebook. Read the part about Charge Sub-phase. You'll see the part where it states that close combat is 2 enemy units in base contact to each other.
On page 21 it says the initial charger has to make contact (that means base 2 base)
I suggest you work on your placement, you might not being doing something right. Perhaps you should go to your local shop and have then teach you how to play correctly.
Bottom line is if you don't make base 2 base on the initial charge then you failed to assault.

I was just looking for a friendly answer sangrail. I appreciate the help but not the attitude. My confusion lies with the failed charge explanation. It mentions nothing about failing if you can't come into contact. It just seems stupid the game forces you to surround an enemy and not let other friendly models join the assault. Just my opinion.

In all fairness Warp I have to agree that it isn't 100% crystal clear. Sadly the 6th ed rules do lean a little bit on prior knowledge.

Moving the initial charger to "make contact" doesn't really cut it for me as it may just mean to make contact with an engaged model so RAW you could actually charge in as to attack you only need to be within 2" of an engaged model so the engaged boys would count.

The thing that seals it is actually in the Multi Assault rules on Page 28 where it says "if the initial charger successfully moves into base contact"

Of course the idea is that all your guys are eager to get stuck in so surrounding the enemy is pretty "fluff correct"

:)

Warp dust,
I see my failing and will make sure to correct it in the future.
I meant no offense, and apoligize that you took as much from my typing. Just looking out is all. As I stated though, you seem confused, which means you either don't understand what you are doing or ca't picture what the reals imply, so I recommend you listen to what others are trying to tell you or get someone at your local shop you can trust not to BS you and show you what others are trying to tell you. Again this is not trying to come off as a a-s-s, just trying to help.

No prob and thanks for the apology. I've been playing quite a while and dont have a local shop (closest is over an hour away). It just confused me that they didn't mention b2b in the failed assault section and never touched on two units assaulting one unit at all in the multiple assaults section. But thanks everyone, I appreciate it.
