So it looks like they've just created more demand for sales from non-GW outlets online. Since these would still be available through other distributors, those stores will likely still have stock coming in, and this is just going to drive those customers to the competition that GW is trying to kill.
Not such a smart move, eh GW?
Also might make it a good time for me to unload my Tau via ebay since there is demand and no product for a week. ;-D

Oh christ not another load of bandwagon jumpers getting the latest codex. This will be even worse with because the 6th Ed tagline is "The Return of the Gun Line". Everyone needs to run Stern Guard Suicide squads in drop pods. Enough Hellfire rounds poisoned 2+, will remind Tau commies that their T6 W5 Riptide is still just steak and kidney inside its manga pie crust.

My plan for Tau at the moment is to get battlesuit commander, two crisis teams, riptide, 3 warrior units, one pathfinder unit, one flyer and a hammerhead with character plus two broadsides.
Hopefully that leaves me enough points for cool upgrades :)

So I preordered a bunch of new Tau stuff at my local store saturday March 30th, and I just got a message saying they aren't getting a bunch of stuff in, namely:
Riptides, Broadsides, Blisters (Longstrike, Darkstrider, Cadre Fireblade?) and fire warrior kits. they said they would be getting these kits 1-2 weeks after launch. This sucks, i've been looking forward to new Tau for years. Oh well, hopefully there won't be further delays. Way to drop the ball GW. Facepalm.

They didn't drop the ball. I am willing to bet that you can get ALL your stuff at a Games Workshop Store at the regularly scheduled weekend. :D They didn't sell out. That is a convenient excuse. This is a way to bolster sales at Games Workshop stores. I assure you that they are only sold out to stores which happen to have a Games Workshop competitor close by.

This got me thinking of stuff that firewarriors will lose to in close combat. Even with defensive grenades. Here is an extensive (not exhaustive) list.
Tactical marines, Guardsmen, Grots (with runtherds), Conscripts, Heavy Weapons Teams, Eldar Guardians, A ripper swarm (just 1), High School Football Teams, My Mom, Your Mom, Empty Infantry Bases (flocked or unflocked), A Stern Talking To and Strong Coffee.

Hey. My Tau once won a close combat. It was hilarious.
1. Necron don't-remember-what-they're-called-but-they're-not-half-bad-in-close-combat charge my fire warriors.
2. Fire warriors lose the combat, but escape.
3. On my turn, fire warriors rapid fire into the necrons they just escaped.
4. Necrons die.
Seriously... the last thing you want to do is let a bunch of fire warriors get away and end up staring down their pulse rifles as they back away from you.

I actually saw this sort of thing happen in a game between two friends.
Thing is, the unit that assaulted the Firewarriors was a squad of GK Paladins. Thanks to terminator armour they couldn't sweeping advance the Firewarriors, who managed to rally and somehow shoot to death the Paladins in the following turn.

It doesn't take that much. I mean, think about it: the Sweeping Advance check is I +1d6. If my I is 2 and yours is 4, I still have a decent chance of beating you. Oh, sure, fire warriors are going to get swept by the really high-Initiative assault units, as well as factions with unusually high Initiative scores across the board (ie. both Eldar races). But against most of the rest of the game - Initiative 3 to 4 - Tau could very well escape.

Assault armies will not have such a faceroll time of it vs. Tau anymore. With their Supporting Fire special rule (that pretty much everything but drones have), combined with the ability to use Markerlight points in Overwatch, means they will often have multiple, rapid fire, high strength units shooting down your assault, or using gravity manipulators to slow you down. The gun line is indeed back, but with more tricks.
Also, I just spoke with my GW sales rep, and the entire stock for EU is zero right now. The UK is actually worse off than other EU countries for Tau stock. Nobody dropped the ball. Despite their best calculations, Tau simply are more popular than even they could figure and prepare for. Best estimates say 1 - 2 weeks for various territories as the factory is cranking out stuff fast.

It is pretty awesome that this release is proving to be so popular. I do hope GW keep this level of demand in mind when they decide what their release stocks of some other long anticipated armies are going to be, the one that springs to mind is Eldar!

I dunno dude. I kind of get it. It's not so much the bandwagoners themselves, as people thinking you're one of them.
Take my Dark Elves. Around 2003, I threw down the gauntlet on Warseer (may still have been Portent then) to make an army out of stuff the Interwebs rubbished. Thus followed a dual-Hydra monster heavy list that was a lot of fun. Fast forward to the current DE books release? And my army became utter, utter filth thanks to the Hydra's getting a points cut and a stat boost! Nobody will believe me when I say I wasn't on the bandwagon, but WAS the bandwagon!

04-04-2013, 07:15 AM
Yeah I get that. I picked up necrons waaaay before rumors of a codex update and got called a bandwagoner whenever I played them after the new codex but I wasn't really bothered. Let people think what they will. I say hurray for bandwagoners, without impulsive buying there might not even be a hobby anymore

I remember his first tactica on Porseer. Took a photo of him with Codex in hand, and still idiots claimed he was making it up.
Same happened with 4th Edition 40k, and the previous Marine codex. Being staff was extra cool then! One particular goon, who claimed to be allowed in the design studio was determined Rending on ranged weapons was called Reaping. Suffice to say like Erebus, he was soon revealed as a false prophet!

In 2001 I was... 8. It was my first introduction to Warhammer, my Mum and Dad bought me the codex and a box as either a late birthday present or early Christmas present, I can't remember. It was the army that I wanted to get into the hobby, and I got it earlier than it's release. I certainly wasn't blogging at 8 years old. ;)

Eeh. I wear a spritely 21 back then!
It's a shame Porseer went the way it did. Time was the boards had a decent noise to signal ratio. I was given an award for my 'Subaquatic Battles' thread by my fellow posters.
Now sadly it's just a massive whine bag. No matter the topic, the hate fascists march on in and devolve it into yet more ill informed whining. It's like a puppy. But not at all cute or endearing, and one that whines louder when it gets attention.
Tragic. Truly tragic.

I complain about bandwagoning. As with so many things in life, its all about intent. If you are a Tau player and want new toys and are getting them, good for you. If you are a mad collector and want more toys good for you too.
But if you are a filthy WAAC neckbeard, who wants to get the codex, try and produce broken combos, and then use your new army to smash others into the ground, thinking the kudos may make up for the lack of glory in your real life, then this is a bad bandwaggoner. They have half painted GK draigo wings, 6 croissant-of-doom necron flier spam armies, and will be trying to do the same with Tau.
I care not about their input to the financial well being of GW, I more pity them for WHY they must have the new army.

My LGS made it a point to order early. In fact he called his sales rep before he normally would and basically badgered him into placing the order early. Everything appeared fine and rumors started floating around that other stores were turned down on orders as no longer available. Then shortly after that they got the news. Sorry but your basically getting just the codex on the release date.
This could mean a few different things, but they all revolve around a lack of concern for retailers. I’ll bet they used their stock to cover their own pre-orders which gets them more money per unit selling at retail to consumers as opposed to selling to LGS’s at a wholesale cost. They clearly are not using a first come first serve system of allocating their products. I don’t know if they pick and choose certain orders over others to fulfill or what. I would hope they would use some sort of computerized inventory system so I find it hard to believe they oversold themselves. Something is definitely wrong if my LGS goes from getting everything they ordered on Monday to sorry you’re only getting the codex on Thursday.
I do not doubt that they’ve run out because this particular release which includes a lot of new figures for an army that hasn’t seen anything new for a long time. I am questioning how they chose to allocate the resources in an unfair manner to either make money or appease larger accounts.
My LGS said his rep was going to throw in a bunch of dice cubes I guess as a consolation for not getting what they had ordered. I imagine it will simply act as a reminder of the slap to the face we just got.

My LGS ordered early and it all arrived today, they had loads of stock in, enough to cover all the customer advance orders and plenty to go out on the shelves too. Whether they still have all of it left by Monday is another thing entirely but right now they have the entire range of new releases plus a good amount of the older figures and vehicles in too. And the codex of course.

I was at my LGS yesterday to pay for my Tau Codex and make sure I got one. I don't think they ordered heavy but they did not get any of the new Broadsides at all and they had ordered 3. Invoice said "Out of Stock". This was there initial store order to go on sale today(Sat 6 Apr 13). Seemed kinda lame to do that to them.

GW issue is they are running Manufacturing to over capacity and not wanting to spend Money to expand. Local GW had ok stock but not enough to satisfy the conspiracy Theory of Stocking their stores first. And the BIGGEST issues is Manufacturing decides levels they do not consult with Sales and that has been that way since 2005. They say sell Said Product and Sales does then they say we are only making y quantity of said Product. They do not Work as a Company they are Dysfunctional.

GW stores were understocked just like everyone else. My local GW store had a fraction of the usual stock for a new release. Instead of getting a case of Codex books to sell they had only about a dozen. The store lost thousands of dollars in sales this weekend from being understocked. All the new models were gone shortly after opening on Saturday and even some of the older existing models sold out too. Advance Orders were so big they ate up a huge chunk of what would have been shelf stock for stores on release day and with only a week between advance orders and release day GW had little time to make up the difference. The guy in Nottingham HQ who did the sales projections for this release may find himself sacked, he or she messed up big time.
This demonstrates really clearly why a one week period between advance orders and release day can be a terribly bad thing for GW, their stores and their independent sellers.

I went to have a neb at a Riptide on Sunday, and stock is apparently that short that they aren't allowed to open one as a display piece yet...had four on the shelf and plenty of codices.
Surely having a viewable model would sell them even quicker?

This was the most difficulty I've had picking up a Codex. I find that I can pretty much walk into any store in my area and grab one within a few days of release, but I made two convenient stops and then had to call around to find one. Out of the three places I was in, most of the coveted releases had sold out already. Luckily, I wasn't prepared to pick up a Riptide, or I might've been cranky. The only time I remember something similar happening was for Grey Kinghts, but there were plenty of the Codex available then, just a shortage of units.
