I've been painting GW figures off and on for quite some time now. Back around 2003/2004 I put together an Ultramarines army and had a lot of fun with them. I took a long break and eventually sold off the army. Fast forward to the present, I've been focusing on the painting side of the hobby more and have worked hard to improve my skills. For some reason... perhaps just sentimentality, I thought it'd be fun to give some space marines another go. Instead of the common chapters I wanted to do something a little different. So after looking over the background info I settled on the Sons of Medusa. Here are my first couple attempts at some Sons of Medusa marines...

And after a little more work here they are together...

I did the iconography on their shoulder pads free hand. I started with the complete design and then went back over it with green to give it a chipped paint sort of feel

I wanted to give them a weathered, battle damaged look. I also felt like trying out my hand at OSL which is why I started out with the plasma pistol.

In case you are curious, here's the color mix I used for the green. I'm working with Reaper Master Series paints

For the white I'm using Reaper's bone set: Bone Shadow, Aged Bone, and Polished Bone

I have never been more annoyed at my school's content filtering blocking images. I'll have to check this thread again from home.

Very nice painting, you have the realism down to a tee. The OSL on the pistol and lenses are awesome. Very subtle paint chips are cool without being ott. The stubble on the marines head is a nice touch too.
Is there any airbrush work on these models ?

I like the tri-colour packs reaper do.

My only real critique is I always think of sons of medusa armour being a much brighter shade of green. But that doesn't detract from an awesome paint job.

Sorry, ElectricPaladin. The images are hosted over at CMON and I guess some places block them. Hope you're able to take a look later.

Thanks, Deadlift. Nope, it's all brush work. I keep meaning to learn how to use an airbrush. The local art store is offered a one day class next month... I've been going back and forth over signing up. I imagine it would certainly speed things up, at least in the early stages.

Yeah, I took some liberties with the shade of green on these guys. It should be an emerald green, but I like the muted shade better. It fits better with the look I'm going for even if it's not 100% accurate for the chapter.

Kudos to then mate, your blending is fantastic. I use an airbrush a lot, my necrons are 95% airbrushed. They are great. But I have personally found my brush work has suffered a little due to less practice. I think for speeding things up for "better than" table top standard they are great. But I am not sure an airbrush will improve on what you have posted today.

Finally!

Sweet lizard, your painting skills are incredible.

That said... where are the ridiculous cybernetic conversions? The Sons of Medusa are Iron Hands successors, and even more extreme about it. Their IA special character is a Master of the Forge who needs to be modeled on a large base... if your conversion skills even approach your painting skills, the end result will be epic, and I want to see it!

Thanks all. Here are a few more figures. This is pretty early in the process... before all the battle damage. Oh, and before the heads. I guess they need those too. My basic process is to paint the green and then the main details. Then I go back over and do all of the battle damage. It's a little bit easier to do that first and then add the arms, heads, and backpacks.
