If you take. per page 127 of the Space Marine Codex, a named character in your own army, can you use a custom model to represent the character, renamed for your army? I use Vulcan He'Stan, renamed of course to be the leader of my army. I have a killer custom model for that I use that is appropriately equipped and clearly my army leader. My buddy thinks I need to convert the actual model of Vulcan.

What do you guys think?

Nah, you never need a specific model for 40k, as long as you can tell what it is and what weapons the model has. You're good to go.

It's absolut okay to make your own model and don't use the one sold by GW. Only thing to do then is that you make clear what the model represents and this is important, make it clear befor game starts - even befor deployment.
If you have a custom model which should use the rulse of Vulcan He'Stan, tell your opponent that you use this special modell as Vulcan He'Stan and all is fine.

As long as you make an effort for it to resemble the special character i'd be ok. i wouldnt like someone using vul'kans rules if its in terminator armour and has a thunderhammer and shield. WYSIWYG should still apply

Yeah, we always are VERY strict about no proxies and WYSIWYG. That is part of the issue. My buddy thinks if we are going to be strict about WYSIWYG you shouldn't use custom models for characters and use exactly what the model is. But I agree with you guys.

Thanks

This is separate from proxies and WYSIWYG. You are creating a similar character for your unique chapter that has no model available ( your character is not Vulkan it just uses his stats). As long as you equip it the way Vulkan is equipped you should be able to use the "count as" rule that is clearly described in the Space Marine book. Tell your buddy to relax, that he is wrong, and that 40K only a game!
