Hi,

My first post and first thread here on Bell of Lost Souls and I'd like to share my "Pre" Heresy Imperial Fist army with you all.

I'm attending a Horus heresy Campaign next May at Warhammer world so I need all 3000 points of the army finished by then. I've got most of the army in bits boxes, I just have to put it all together...

I started the project several months ago and here are some of the most recent shots.

Love this! I've got to the stage where marines rarely make me think "wow they're nice" but for some reason your take on the fists colouring really really works for me... keep posting this please I'm interested to see how they turn out

Sure thing Tom.

To get to where the army is at the moment I did the following;

Undercoat with a Chaos Black spray.
Apply two watered down coats of Iyanden Darksun
Mix up a Black and Scorched Brown wash. Apply the wash to small areas and then with a clean brush take away some of the wash to create the streaked effect.

However this is just the first part. The plan is to bring the army upto this standard, paint all the details and then really set about tackling the yellow.

They don't differ much, unlike some of the other legions who have a wildly different colour scheme.

If you look closely at tactical squads you will notice alot of the old armour Mk's. You will also find a few Templar cross's and there are no Imperial Eagles until I come to the jetbikes.

The vehicles arn't really Pre Heresy at the moment but I am working on changing that shortly.

What you see here is just the first 1000 points later I will be adding,

Fellsword.
landspeeders.
Jet Bikes.
Sabre Tank Hunter.
Storm Tank.
Terminators.
Primarch Honour Guard.

So expect it to look alot more "Pre heresy" by the end. :D

The Heavy Support.

The Dozer Blades on all three Vehicles are magnestised aswell as the heavy bolter sponsons and autocannon turrets on the two Predators so I can swap them for Lascannon turrets;

I've yet to make the Lascannon sponsons for them but I can't see myself ever using them apart from a Apocalypse game.

The Vindicator is going through a heavy conversion at the moment to make it into a Sabre Tank Hunter so expect some pictures of that soon.

I just need to find a few parts for it.

I plan to use the Basilisk cannon (If anyone has one spare please send me a PM) combined with some plastic tubing for the Rotary lascannon. I just need to think of somthing for the top hatch and either make the track coverings or get hold of some Chimera ones.

Excellent, can't wait to see WIPs of it.
For mine I was thinking of using reversed Leman Russ tracks and the hull build up from a Vindicator front and left over LR parts, as well as a Land Raider power plant on the back.
For the Rotary Lascannon I have lots of lascannons left over from some Imperial Guard so i'll fuse 3 together and add some banding around them.
That is the theory anyway.........

As you can see I've used the New Land Raider Engine block and the new doors.

I'm not a fan of the sponsons show on the drawings and I'd hope that the old style lascannon (which I made by cutting the lascannons in half) suits being a hot shot lasgun.

I've also decided I'm going to magnetise the hull section and the hot shot las guns so I can swap some parts around and use it as a Landraider in the future.

Unfortunatly I can't really carry on at the moment as I have to gather parts for it and the bits sites I've looked on are all sold out :mad:

il have to finish painting the StormSword I guess.

The crew member has a different shoulder pad to the rest of the army. I aim to give all my tank crews the same pad. The head if from Chronus and the torso is converted so he has the same style of armour trimming as the Legion Champion.

The siege shields are from the forgeworld repressor kit. I've magnetised them so I can have them with and without the shields.

Shadow Queen, The Helmets are either plastic gamesworkshop ones, Forgeworld red scorpion parts of Maximini steam knight helmets.

Might just be me though, but I reckon the Rhino's look better without the Dozer Blades... They kind of detract from the model.

It has been a while as I've been busy with moving house and things. The Tempus Fugitives campaign weekend is now only two months away! I've a lot of work to do!!

Emperors Mercy, I personally love my Dozer blades and in the campaign with certain characters Imperial Fists can have Siege shields on all of there vehicles. I think the Repressor Dozer blades represent siege shields rather well.

He is the Second member of the Primarch honour guard squad. The first member I did was the Thunder Hammer armed Champion. My aim is to have all the squad as impressive as him. Although not as impressive as he is the Legion Champion after all. ;)

His sword is from the Emperor's Champion model. I shaved the sword Icon off his leg and Templar symbol off his shoulder pad. I then replaced his bolt pistol hand with a gauntlet that was similar to the Emperor's Champions. His left hand shoulder pad I completely removed with a hacksaw and have put a standard Imperial Fist shoulder pad in its place.

I still have a lot of green stuff work to do to fix the cloak which will go under the Imperial Fist icon attached to his left Breast. I also need to find a suitable bolt pistol and I'm also considering fixing a helmet to his belt.

Here is where I need your help! I need to find another two swords as equally impressive as this guys. Any suggestion?!

I removed the Banner from the Ultramarine yesterday and I've just held it in place for now to give you all a better idea of what he is going to look like.

I plan to remove the 'U' from the top and replace it with the fist icon from Kantors banner. The XIII shall be replace with a VII.

I'm undecided on removing the Eagle at the top of the banner and Eagle Wings from the sides of the banner. I may keep them on. It is the Primarchs banner afterall!

The Space marine on the banner with have his Ultramarine symbol removed and smoothed out or turned into a fist symbol. The Tyranid he is shooting will be turned into flames rising around his feet.

The Ultramarine symbols at the bottom quarter of the banner will either be turned into Fists or perhaps just a thick line seperating that secton of the banner.

You probably know this already, but the drop pods come with some cool little plastic Imperial fist peices you could easily incorporate. (The fists on the Vindis reminded me).

Also, the Fists symbol is realtivly easy to free hand, might want to give it a shot when you get to the painting stage.

All three are (will be!) equipped with Heavy Bolters and Multi Meltas. They took a fair while to put together and everything has been pinned. I also have a pin running through the flight stand.

I did a fair bit of neating up on him and have made him stand a little higher on the base so hes now a fair bit taller than all the other models.

His head if from a space wolf kit, I shaved all the hair off and am about to sculpt some more on.

The chest armour needs a fist sculpted onto it and some more detail added to the rim. I also need to sculpt Fist Icons on his Tabbard and sculpt his cloak where I had to cut away the ammo feeds on his back.

IIRC doesn't Dorn wield a sword? Because he breaks it across his knee when he fails to protect the emperor, and it gets forged into the sword of the high marshals. And then something about the arrow of Dorn which is a storm bolter possibly?

That Storm Bolter is the one Pedro Kantor carries. Also, Dorn does carry a large chainsword.And to voice my opinion, I really don't like the head. Here are links to some pictures of Dorn.

Cheers guys, His head isnt finished yet and my feeling on his choice of weapons is that Dorn and all the other Primarch most likely had a rather large armoury. I also dont have much choice as Im using him in the campaign weekend he needs to be armed as his rules say he is. Which means a big Thunder hammer and Storm shield to start with.

I'm not to keen on any of those pieces of artwork which is why I have gone for the one by Aerion the faithful.

Im really liking your down and dirty feel to the imperial fists, rather than the prim and proper codex fists we see every day! I chose pre-heresy colours with my death guard, albeit they're meant to look down dirty but i felt that worked very well with white, and so does the yellow in your scheme!!

A tactical squad sgt who grants the unit he is with vengeance rounds and liturgies of battle. He is armed with a power fist and Crozarius Arcanum.

If you look further back in the thread you would have seen a very similar looking model before. I used that Lysander to make my Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield Sgt. This time he is Archamus, Master of the Huscarl Templars.

As Archamus has the Heroic Intervention Special rule to make full use of it I had to make a new squad of Primarch Honour Guard in Terminator armour. They certainly arnt as impressive as the other squad in Artificer armour but after the campaign they will be remodelled to become normal Terminators.

I am reluctant to call them finished as they dont have weapons and I do have plans to add battle damage to get back to the grittier, dirty look that I had before. I have been looking at this tutorial,

I just cant bring myself to do the squad just yet. I will have to do some test models and practise first.

Since I did this squad I have also been working on my vehicles. Well just the siege shields.

I'm going for a very dirty and worn look on all of the vehicles. I shall be repainting them all soon with the airbrush. The siege shields will be the most worn and dirty part but hopefully it gives you a good idea of how the vehicles might look.

The marines will still be relatively clean and bright. I've still got a little weathering to do but they wont be anywhere near as dirty as the vehicles. I was a contrast between the two. I'm sure it will work out fine in the end.

Looking awesome! I really like the look of those contemptor dreadnoughts.

You might want to try adding a few washer between the torso and legs of the old dreadnought. That extra 1/4 of an inch or so really changes the dynamic of the old dread.

I really liked this kit. Certainly one of the most fun models that I've painted. I shall certainly be getting another kit. Two asssault cannons and a cyclone missile launcher. ;)

I've done some work on the second tactical squad and my forgeworld order or gunz has arrived.

I added a new squad member using the Forgeworld MK5 kit. I still think mine fit in rather well.

I just need the heavy weapon backpacks to complete the squad.

Ive also done some arm replacements on the sternguard and they now have the forge world guns although none of them are gled on yet.

I played a game yesterday against my mates dark angels it was a close fought game that ended in a draw. A turn more and I would have had won the game.

That contemptor is amazing. You should be proud. The pose is brilliant, it feels heavy and cautious, you have given the model a real sense of 'presence'. The weathering's good, especially the soot on the exhaust vents and damage around the fingers/fists. Brilliant job on the face as well, the highlights are really crisp and the eyes really make it pop.

The Reaper Autocannon is awesome too. Nice thought. Where did you get the piece from (I want to say a Cygnar warjack from Warmachine, but I cant be sure).

The Tactical Squad on the previous page is awesome too. The Maximus head guy and the sergeant jump at me.

The gun is a mix of the space wolves assault cannon and chaos reaper autocannon. I've never been near a warmachine figure.

I've made a little more progress with the weathering but I still need to add the tracks.

I swapped my vindicators with a friend for some new ones as I wanted to put the Rhino conversion kit on them. I quickly got some yellow paint onto them. So quick that the army photo above has the old vindicators in it.

I got hold of some guns from the Forge World Tauros kit for my Terminators.

Who suddenly got alot better with 6th edition so they may even see some tabletop action.

I've also been working on a conversion beamer techmarine. Although Im not sure that I am happy with the conversion beamer placement. I might stick it on some tracks so it can wheel around next to him.

My contemptor unfortunately came unstuck on the legs so I took the opportunity to capture a photo of the dread doing some Matrix moves. Why else would he get a 5+ save against shooting attacks?!?

My Forgeworld and bits orders have arrived enough bits for 6 missile launchers and 6 heavy bolters. I am arming my tactical squads and a devestator squad and magnetising them both so I can swap the weapons over. I just need some more magnets.

I've been working on my Orks recently and actually won the local stores armies on parade competition with them. So check out that thread.

Yesterday I sat down with my airbrush and my two contemptors to try and tie them both in together as the older contemptor was alot brighter and cleaner than the new one so I have dirtied them both up. I think the Mortis perhaps looks a little worse while the contemptor looks a little better. So they hopefully balance each other out. I have a few bits left to finish on the pair mostly the metals and details.

Heres a few pics for comparison and a few with some tactical marines.

As you can see the Tactical marines are a lot brighter than the Contemptors. Hopefully it all ties in together though as I wanted the infantry a fair amount brighter.

Thanks guys! I'm glad you persuaded me to weather them. I'm really happy with the look and glad you think they look well worn and fit to stand infront of the walls of the emperors palace.

I have put together a guide on the weather techniques I have used. Obviously I am weathering over Yellow but this can easily be applied to any other colour. I used it to great effect on my Iron Warriors vehicles. Its my new favourite technique! Although it sounds complicated as it uses some unfamiliar mediums it is actually very easy.

Stage 1

Paint the whole model to your usual standard.

Stage 2

Liberally spray the whole model with hairspray. Theres not need to buy the expensive stuff. I picked up a bottle of Sainsburys own brand for 37p.

Stage 3

I mixed up scorched brown, graveyard earth and chaos black and sprayed it onto the lower half of the model using my airbrush.

Stage 4

While the paint is drying boil up some water and grab your large drybrush. You can then dissolve the hairspray, wiping off the excess onto tissue paper. Leaving on or taking off as much of the paint as you see fit.

I then resprayed the middle section of each model with hairspray and repeated the previous steps. Once dry I then did some light sponging with Chaos Black over any areas that needed a little extra.

Stage 6.

Take your weathering powders. Here I used MIG Pigments. Vietnam Earth, Europe Dust and Black Smoke. You can apply these using your large drysbrush cover the base and sections of the model.

Stage 7.

Spray the model with Matt varnish as soon as you've finished with the weathering powders. Otherwise your find your have a mess of powder everywhere. Once you've sprayed the Matt varnish, pick out the eyes and apply a light drybrush of grey to the base.

DONE!

If you just did the one model at a time you could spray the whole model at once and not need to re spray the hairspray. I did this with the second squad. But you've got to be quick with dissolving the hairspray. I hope that helps and some of you are tempted to give it a go!

Im dead chuffed with having the vindicators finished they have been a mainstay of my army for years now and I love using them in game so its nice to finally have them finished.

They've gone through several changes over the years but I think its been worth it. The vindicators have the look of the German WW2 Stug tanks and Im really pleased with the new crewman. Its great that the Sabre tank hunter now has its own rules thanks to Forge Worlds betrayal book.

Thats 2000pts finished so I shall get a army shot up soon.

These are some of the worst photos that I have taken as the lighting was so poor but they give you the idea. He is magnetised with a Combi Flamer and Plasma Pistol so he can be used as a standard chaplain or Cassius. He also has the first transfer that I have used on a infantry model. I've used them before on a couple of vehicles in this army as well as my Flames Of War Germans. I am really getting on with them and want to use them alot more in the future. The weathering really helps set it in and make it look part of the model.

After a hectic week and finally exchanging today I am moving house tomorrow! Unfortunately that means that I wont have access to the internet for a few weeks at least. When I am back online however I promise that I will get a few shots of the finished 2000 point army.

Its been several months since my last post because Ive since moved house and been very busy renovating it. I recently went to a tournament organised by a mate of mine and won both best painted and the overall tournament.

I needed to paint up a tactical squad for my list so after many months I broke the paint brushes out again and made a start on this squad,

He is a mass of bits at the moment and is literally held together with blu tac. I'd be most impressed if anyone could name all the parts.

I'm stuck on wether he should have a helmet or not. I am leaning towards a helmet with a nice big plume on it. Possibly MK4. The archeotech pistol is based off the rogue trader artwork. I just need to add some guitar string for the cables.

I'm also stuck on what to put on his backpack. I am thinking of adding either a banner or a iron halo. Like the original legion champion that I started all the way back on page 1.

The helmet is just a place holder and not the actual helmet I will be using. I am still waiting for that.

I did a little playing around with limited edition plasma pistol arm and at the moment I do like the look of it. Possibly more so. But I still need to add a couple of cables to the archeotech pistol arm before I properly decide. It would be nice to have the converted weapon as a homage to the old Skool rogue trader look.

The three tanks have had a coat of hairspray weathering. Still plenty of work to go on them but I won't be able to get anymore done until after the event.

Nothing new to show off just yet guys. I did however have a great weekends gaming at Warhammer World playing at the Horus Heresy Betrayal weekend. Here is a review for everyone and a few photos.

Game 1.

The first game was 2000pts and the mission was fire tide from the betrayal book. We had five objectives and a special sequence for the fire tide special rules. You place a counter which scatters 3d6 and inflicts S5 AP- hits against everything within 6 inches. It does sound that bad but it is as it remains in play for the duration of the game.

I played a really great opponent Owen who had a all infantry list with Rylanor, terminators and a missile launcher devastator squad. I had a spartan with 20 marines & a chaplain. 2 vindicators with machine spirit, 2 graviton cannons and a typhon as well as two tactical squads.

We both deployed on one objective with one in the middle and one each just forwards from our deployment zones. I won The first turn and zoomed forwards moving my rhino onto on objective & my spartan into the middle. The typhon took one flank and opened up killing all but one of his devastator squad while my vindicators moved onto the other flank.

We exchanged fire for several turns, I lost both vindicators while taking down most of his infantry and Rylanor. It was a close game coming down to me having first blood. Fire tide was brutal! I lost a whole tactical squad in two turns who I thought had secured one objective. I also lost a rhino and half of another tactical squad. The score was 8-7. I lost my tactical squad holding one objective on the very last turn of the game. Just loosing out on three additional VP's.

It was a great opening game! Really fun and a chance to play against a suburb opponent.

Game 2

The second and final game of the day was 2500 pts. The mission was to get as many infantry units into your opponents deployment zone as possible. I played against Chris and his very nicely painted eavy metal style Ultramarines / Iron Hands force. I had a similar list to the game before without the vindicators but with a command squad and another spartan in the mix.

Chris had some outflanking veterans in a rhino, two land raiders with terminators and tactical marines as well as a fell blade, a 15 a tactical squad on foot with praetor & a tactical support squad. I delayed in a armoured spearhead with my Spartans up front. I won the first turn again! I zoomed up and shot everything at the land raiders and fell blade. I immobilised one land raider and took a single hull point off the fell blade. The typhon killed most of a squad wielding the new volkite guns.

Over the next few turns Chris advanced on both flanks avoiding the middle ground where my armour pushed up. We exchange shots against each others tanks with my graviton cannons doing a good job of slowing down his tactical squad with praetor who advanced on foot.

I got very lucky! By turn 3 my Spartans had rolled a lot of 6's knocking off all the structure points from the fell blade. It only got to fire once the whole game before it was destroyed. It was a loosing battle for Chris from here although his terminators and outflanking squad did get into my deployment zone and destroy my gravitons I pushed all of my troops into his earning the maximum amount of VP's. The game ended 11-2.

Chris was another fantastic opponent and I thoroughly enjoyed the game despite my amazing luck at disabling and destroying his fell blade by turn three. We had a great laugh playing each other and both really enjoyed the game.

By the end of the first day I had played two great games against two great opponents and as a nice bonus I had won both.

Game 3

1500pts I was against a mechanised infantry alpha legion list. Four squads in rhinos, 2 tacticals a veteran & destroyer squad. With a centurion, dual plasma pistol moritat & two melta / multi melta contemptors. I took a command squad in a spartan, two tactical squads in rhinos, 2 vindicators & 2 graviton rapiers.

It was a special mission designed for the weekend. The idea was to make contact with a piece of terrain in the centre and then send a signal up, earning 2 VPs for each successful transmission. In each turn you rolled two dice and added any bonus modifiers from having characters in contact with the terrain.

I won the first turn again and steamed forward with everything. I opened up and destroyed two rhinos & took a few hull points off each contemptor. I won the roll and managed to send a signal up first. The next couple of turns I lost the roll off with some poor dice rolls. I concentrated on taking down the contemptors and getting my troops into combat around the objective. By turn 5 I had wiped out my opponent but we drew on victory points. In hindsight I should have left the immobilised rhino alive & hopefully won some more VPs with the amount of bonusses applied from all my characters I had next to the terrain.

We drew 6 - 6 on VPs with a moral victory for the loyalist Imperial Fists.

Game 4

The last game of the weekend! A doubles game with 6000pts a side. The mission was annihilation from the betrayal book. Victory points are earned for wiping out units. With each slot worth a certain amount of VPs. I played with my mate Rob who fielded Mortarion with 5 death shroud in a spartan, 2 squads of 20 infantry with voxs, 3 graviton rapiers, 2 melta cannon predators & 2 medusas. I fielded praetor, command squad in a land raider, 2 squads of 20 tactical marines in Spartans, typhon & 3 graviton rapiers.

We played against a Deathguard army with a mass of infantry probably 70 - 80 troops with 3 plasma dreadnought, vindicator & land raider. I also came up against my previous opponent from the third game with his Alpha Legion army. He fielded a praetor with terminator command in a land raider, breacher squad in a land raider, mortitat & destroyers in a rhino, veterans in a rhino, tactical marines on foot, stormeagle & 3 contemptors.

Our opponents had taken a list tailored to victory point denial. A breacher squad inside a land raider, over 600pts worth only 1 VP. And a terminator Praetor with terminator command inside a Land Raider over 700pts worth only 2 VPs.

We won the roll off and decided to deploy second. The Deathguard deployed most of there infantry on our left flank with the land raider & dreadnought in the middle. The alpha legion deployed two land raiders & the destroyer rhino in the centre with 3 contemptors and one rhino on the right flank.

We deployed most of our troops on our right flank and centre. Placing all the heavy armour up front to weather any fire coming our way. We needn't have worried. I jokingly said to my mate that we would let them deploy first but still go first as I would seize the initiative... I did!

The first turn was brutal! We opened up with everything at the enemies armour. By the end of the first turn the only armour left on the board was a vindicator and one contemptor! Our opponents took this very well and played like gentlemen. We continued to move forward. Mortarion and the death shroud took the infantry on the left flank with fire support from the medusas. My imperial fists and melta predators moved up the centre and right flank. Taking out whatever infantry was left.

By the end of turn five we had wiped out our opponents, it took me two turns to blow a storm bird out of the sky. The alpha legion praetor took several turns to go down. He survived 4 or 5 lascannon shots before finally being taken down by tactical marines in a huge combat. Mortarion and the death shroud swept through the whole left flank leaving nothing alive.

The game ended earning us maximum possible victory points.39 - 2. Rob lost a deathshroud & several troops as well as both his predators. I had lost 7 tactical marines. A truly brutal game with massive loses inflicted on our opponents who really did take it like champs. Once again a pleasure to play against.

Results

The weekend was nearly over. Just a small matter of awards & what side won. Spikey James won the well deserved best army award with his huge world eaters force. The victory points had been swinging back and forth the whole weekend with loyalist and traitor sides both taking the lead throughout the weekend, with the final game results tallied. The results were in... Loyalist victory! 907 - 774.

First place overall was awarded to two loyalist players who earned 76 Victory points each. Remember I mentioned losing out on three victory points from fireside in the very first game? It came back to haunt me! I finished with 73 VPs in 2nd / 3rd place after earning three favourite player votes for a bonus total of 9 additional victory points. There was a possible 5 favourite player votes up for grabs but as I played the same person twice I missed out even though he voted for me It only counted as one vote.

Conclusion

Four great games against 4 great opponents! I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and will certainly attend the next one. I assume they are planning on one event for each forge world book released. I am looking forward to fielding my Imperial Fists again and adding to them in the future as new units & rules are released.

The whole event was well organised and run smoothly. It was the first time I used the Heresy rule set and it makes for some really great games! It feels well balanced as everyone can select from the same book. There are a lot of little tweaks you can miss. Nearly any vehicle can take power of the machine spirit. My vindicators rule! The ability to move 12 & still shoot is amazing.

It was the first time I used a lot of the units,

Spartans can really pump out some serious firepower, four twin linked lascannon shots a turn is amazing.

The Typhon really scares opponents as it ignores cover. On occasions some of my opponents deployed out of cover because the typhon had the ability to ignore it. Which meant all my other units could take advantage of this.

Graviton Rapiers sucked against infantry in my first game. Against heavy armour with the haywire rule they are fantastic, claiming several land raiders, dreadnoughts & even a fellblade. They can also slow down infantry by forcing difficult terrain tests. Just don't expect them to kill many.

Would I change anything? In the 3000 pt list I would like to remove the typhon & contemptor and replace them with a second chaplain & a fell blade. Fell blade for the looks & the chaplain to go with a tactical squad. Fearless marines are great as And they shall know no fear is missing.

I shall have to do something to tie the three together. That is the problem with painting things at different times.

I only have the four members of the command squad to paint up and then the army is mostly "finished". I am waiting on some Matt varnish and then I will go back and tie the army in together. I want to repaint the all the models eyes either a brighter green or red and re do the bases so they all look the same tone.

That maniple is looking top notch mate. As a way to tie them together, how about a bit of friendly competition? Give them all kill markings of some description, perhaps on the big flat area on the shoulder. If they are all done in the same style, it should work quite nicely. Not to mention, the HH books all go on about the Primarchs being driven as much by brotherly rivalries (before the fall of Horus) as anything, so why wouldn't they encourage that amongst their sons? Particularly those that are almost as mighty as the Primarchs in their new iron-forms!
