Have any of you done any cosplaying as 40k characters? Last year at Youmacon(Detroit's big anime and general geekdom con) I saw a pretty cool tech-priest, and this year I'm gonna do my own tech-priest costume and maybe something else simple like an Inquisitor or something from IG.

No but I did see a pratorian at Kitacon. And I missed the farseer at gamesday.

Eldar Warlock, Dark Eldar Archon, and I started on a Dire Avenger a couple of years ago but never really finished it, and I'm planning on taking what I've done so far and making it into either an Autarch or Prince Yriel depending on how much I can get done between now and the end of May (London MCM Expo). Basically I'll make everything but not paint the armour until I know which I'll have time to finish, then paint it either white for the Autarch or Black for Yriel. I could just paint it black and be an Ulthwe Autarch if Yriel isn't finished, but my main craftworld is Biel-Tan, so I'd like to do that, especially considering their obsession with warfare, a Biel-Tan Autarch is probably the pinnacle. :P

Me for a start. My avatar is actually a photo of me at Games Day UK a few years ago that made it on to GW's website.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa258/BR_Calix/Inquisitor/gamesdayuk2.jpg

I also dressed up as a Commissar for the 40k 6th Ed release. That did nearly get me arrested (the story of which can be found elsewhere on this forum) but other than that it made for a fantastic day, especially as the GW staff left me in charge of running various mini-games, giving me a great excuse to shout at the annoying little kids who were there :P

I have lots of pictures of other peoples costumes, though.

I've been curious to do some cosplay, but several things get in the way. First, I'm an old(ish) fart, and damn if people don't get all up in my face when I publicly act my maturity and not my age (they say I'm pretending to be young again, not realizing I never actually grew up).

The second slightly more important reason is, when doing the things I do now, my five year old daughter slaps her forehead and asks, "Daddy, why are you so weird?" In general I could care less what anyone thinks of me and what I do, but when my five year old wonders about my strangeness, it gives me a slightly longer moment of pause.

Lastly, and actually the most important reason is I'm a bit overweight, and there's not that many action/adventure characters with a beer gut. Somehow the Princess saying, "Aren't you a little too blubbery to be a Storm Trooper?" just doesn't come off as epic. And no, I'm not going as Porkins ... thankfully I'm not big enough for that ... yet.

So go as an ork, ogre, dwarf, or even some high ranking imperial official, Commisar, whatever you want. If your size if holding you back, you can find plenty of slightly larger characters in 40k/fantasy. But honestly I say go for it anyways, cosplay is about showing that you love something, who cares about the rest ;)

I dunno...I think body type matters quite a bit for cosplay. It's the difference between being awesome or sad/creepy/gross. For it to work I think your body type has to be at least similar to whomever you're trying to emulate.

Case in point, Google "Bubba Moon".

I would love to cosplay as some things, myself, but my spare tire would fit a lifted off-road truck as well. Fortunately, there are other routes to do so, such as executive staff, etc, and not always being a specific person.

Wow. I've had the pleasure (misfortune?) of being in costumes based on stilts and with gigantic armatures/prosthetic. Those wings are beautiful, and compliment a great kit altogether. If I was wearing it I would probably want to have 2 spotters to manage all my walkways and doors =) Epic job!

Saying that some of the efforts I am seeing here are rather good.

Never got why people can't just call it Dressing Up.

I kid you not, I have a Dressing Up box at home (Ottoman, foot of my bed) which contains my LARP kit, Pinhead costume and Pirate stuff. And if I manage to save up £2,000 and lose my remaining money sense (always possible) a full on Judge Dredd costume (comics, not movies). Why?

Because I like to play Dress Up, and I don't need some anglicised Japanese wordy thing to try and make it cool. I'm a nerd. I embrace my inner nerd, and accept that I will never be 'cool'.

Whilst I am a nerd at heart, I still have a streak of sport jock in me too, an uneasy hybrid that just can't do dress up except on holloween.

But Mr Mystery, you not "cool" I beg to differ. "Nerd" is the new cool. Your a trend setter my friend :)

Warhammer + Warhammer40k have tons of possibilties so just do what you feel....don't let others keep you from doing you, who the hell said you had to grow up? I'm in my 40's and still I'm young @ heart...nuthin wrong with that.

You all must have seen the simply insane Imperial Fists Terminator gear someone made right? blew my mind. My one and only gripe about it, is that I would have made the handle of the Thunderhammer a little thicker, but even that is a minor, teensy tiny thing.
