I know lots of people think they look like crap, but I just love the old school plastic marines from when I was 10 years old.

well i love em :)

a nice little force you have there, my own mock RTB01 force will be getting ordered this coming week.
im doing FW mk VI and the odd GW plastic/FC for a RT mentor legion army.

dont let the party poopers get you down, the old guys are cool, if a little small :)

are you doing them all CF? if so you gotta get the 25th anniversary dude from ebay, that will look ace

I dont think they look like crap, in fact they are delightfully cheesey and fun. While saying that though its not an aesthetic I would run personally, but I can appreciate the history behind it.

I love 'em too. Love that Mentor Legions avatar as well!

One way you can increase the size of the RTB01's is to add a "sole" of plastic card to the bottoms of their feet. I used Tamiya 1.2mm plastic card and it worked a treat. The RTB01's are pretty flat footed anyway, so even if they were tall enough, they'd still benefit from a sole.

One of the sets of legs has a foot bent at the pad, so you'll have to snip your plastic card sole in two and use liquid greenstuff to fill in the "hinge" where the foot bends.

Sticking them on pre-sculpted resin bases also helps, as these are often a bit taller than the standard Games Workshop base, so they help bump up the models' heights.

I've found that the backpacks don't usually fit well onto the back, so what I've done is take a small (I'm guessing about 1mm thick) square-shaped slice out of any of the supports on a Games Workshop sprue, and glue that between the back and the backpack.

One more tip (before I bore you all to death) is that a lot of the Anvil Industry parts match the RTB01 models really well. Many of the Anvil bits, the heads especially, seem more 25mm than 28mm. They look weird on a standard Space Marine, but fit well with the RTB01's.

Good luck with your collections guys!

yeah i found AI parts smaller than GW too, but they will indeed be great for the old models :)

hopefully my mentor legion (see the thread, its only dodgy WIPs at the mo), will be coming along pretty quik once the FW order is done :)

i really wish i had my old RTB01's i loved the kit so much :)

It looks like you had to strip some paint on those plastics. What did you use, Pine Sol?

I only had to strip about 6 of them, I used simple green from walmart it was $1.99 and it worked ok. I also did quite a bit with a hobby knife. The worst part was the Rhino I fished it out of bargan bin for $15, it had 7 layers of paint, red, blue, green, brown, white, black, and grey. It took about 3 days with a hobby knife to get it to what you see in the picture. Not bad for $15. I the RTB01 boxed set on ebay for $45 that was still on the sprues for the most part and had about 27 marines. Then I just started buying up all the RTB01 marines I could find. I have 50 of them now plus the Rhino. I'm watining on forge world MK5 jump packs for the assult squad.

I was bidding on the 25th anniversary fig last night but I kept getting outbid for it. $30 for one dude seems like a alot, also as much as I lover the cover of the rogue trader book I wonder why they didnt keep it looking like the artwork. I may just try and make my own version of that cover figure.

I love the Mk6 Corvus PA. Almost half of my 700 Power Armor marines are "beakies" They are what I teethed my 40K habit on when I started. The Crimson Fist paint job looks great. Keep up the good work.

700... I have to ask, are you collecting an entire chapter, or is that spread out over multiple armies?

700... I have to ask, are you collecting an entire chapter, or is that spread out over multiple armies?

Yes. I am working on my own chapter the Black Widows. Started back in 87' with the original rogue trader rules and have been building since then. I have about 60% of my chapter in figs so far including enough termies for my first company and about 160 scouts. My life goal is to have my whole chapter painted and photographed someday. I would say though only about 30% of my marines are painted to table top standared so far. But I am working on it. I know, crazy. One day I will get there.

Cpt Codpiece
02-23-2013, 03:34 AM
hehe 2nd era plasmas :D i actually have a few of the older ones :) the ones FW updated (ork weapons sprue with plas cannon and power klaw).

those packs are great, and look really cool on the MK VI...... i was planning on using the 'normal' jump packs for mine.... but seeing those i may be changing my plan hahahaha

looking better with every post :)

Nice! :) Did you consider trying to find the RT jumpacks?

I did but I think they are all metal and that would have made them very heavy and awkward. I know its breaking the spirit of using the original bits. My thought on the using MK5 packs was that in most of the space marine lore they hand down their armour for 1000s of years.

Cpt Codpiece
02-23-2013, 10:00 AM
the MK V jump packs are FWs attempt at updating the MK II (which was FW copying the old metals), so they more closley match the evolution of the MK VI-VII jump packs we have in plastic today.

i recon waiting till the raven guard get their HH jump packs (obviously mk VI we shall see if they are like MK IV or the later ones we have today) would be way too long and the MK V are definatly the way to go :)

I'd use both of the Rhinos.

You should do this. Minis are sad when they aren't being played with. They're even sadder when they haven't even been built, yet. They cry themselves to sleep. I've heard them, weeping in the night.

I told my wife about the minis weeping at night and she okayed buying all the minis and giving them good homes. Jokingly. I think.

I started putting the land raider togeather tonight and I forgot how much I hate working on forgeworld kits. There just such a pain in the ***. I may not be in the majority here but I vastly prefer plastic to resin.

while plastic is simpler, the end result is usually miles better with resin. but i know what you mean FW and the bends casts can be a PITA

OMG the treads on this thing took all day, I even had to cut them and remove a tred because the just dont fit. Good lord what a PITA.

Dont leave that rhino in the box, gotta assemble it otherwise your marines will get upset with you and normally that means terrible luck on tabletop. Yes im supersticious, why do you ask.

how's the army going, it's been a long while since you posted last...

Hell this thread inspired me to make a small RT era army, got about 12 of these beakies so far, including two unused sprues from the old RTB01 set!
