Are Forge world models legal to use in regular games of 40K? I have one of the conversion kits from them for a predator that's just a re-sculpted twin-linked lascannon turret and sponsons.

Short answer: Forge World models are always fair game. Variant sculpts fall under this category, but si do whole models used to represent a codex unit. You want to use one of the named greater daemons to represent a generic one, or a Contemptor to represent a standard dread? Knock yourself out. Forge World units are fair game as long as they are stamped for 40K and not Apocalypse.

Slightly longer answer: as a thought experiment, try to find the rule that says that Citadel miniatures are "legal," or that units from Codex: Space Marines are "legal." I think you'll have a hard time. The truth is, it's legal because your opponent is cool with it.

There was a discussion a little while ago, *HERE* (http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/showthread.php?26928-Forge-world-Etiquette), that talked about Forgeworld Etiquette. The basic understanding was, as long as you have the rules for it, either printed or the book, most people would be okay with you fielding something from an Imperial Armour Book. Considering my local gaming group is turning toward Imperial Armour books for some list variants I'm pretty much okay with you fielding whatever as long as it is labeled for use in 40k and not Apocolypse. I actually use a Vendetta as a stand in Vulture (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Navy/VULTURE-GUNSHIP.html) for now, and trying to get something to mimic the size of the Imperial Guard Rapier Laser Destroyer (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Cadian_Shock_Troops/GRAIA-PATTERN-RAPIER-LASER-DESTROYER.html). My friends like to include interesting Land Raider variants and different Army lists from Imperial Armour books to mix things up.

1) There is nothing illegal about using forgeworld.
2) a "regular" game of 40k would be a non-tourney game, or a "friendly pick-up game" therefore, most people won't have an issue, but you can also ask your opponent if they think it's cool.
a) If it's a Tourney, check with the TO
b) If you have the IA books or relevant FW book, they are also marked with "40k approved" stamps - most of those units are just fine for "regular" play.
3) the conversion kit for a predator is just that - a conversion. There are no distinct advantages to that kit model wise, and it uses the standard 40k rules. Most people won't have an issue with that model, in fact a lot of people will probably comment and say "Oh cool, a FW conversion"

don't worry about your FW predator - anyone who gives you grief for using it is probably someone you don't want to play anyways. :)

I once had somebody, in a friendly game, question the legality of using my Hydras. I pointed out to him that since I had an entry in my codex for them, they were legal. He then asked if they had been made by GW, because if not, then they were not allowed. I then showed him the rules for 'Ard Boyz that year that said Forgeworld models were allowed if there was a codex entry for the model. Needless to say, he backed down. And he tended to stop coming around so much.

I have always been of the opinion that if you have a codex entry, or are just proxying something, then it is fine. I do draw the line at superheavies, unless we have agreed to use them. And frankly, anybody that is that stuck up about the manufacturer of the model you are using isn't going to that much fun to play against. It is just a game that we are all playing for fun. If you want to be such a stickler, then you aren't having fun.

And just to verify for you.
In the Forge World book, Imperial Armour Apocalypse 2nd Edition (2011) they have the 'Warhammer 40,000' stamp for certain units (basically all non-super heavies).
It states (paraphrasing):
This unit is intended to be used in 'standard' games of 40k...As with all our models these should be considered 'official', ...but make sure your opponent is happy to play a game using Forge World models.

Our gaming store specifically allows all 40k stamped models in their game nights and leagues. Some units are also allowed in tournaments.

My Night Lords army is almost entirely forge world models. I use the Mk III and IV armour for all my troops and I use 2 Blood Slaughterers as Dreds (hellbrutes). I play at two clubs and have taken the list to 4 tournies (in the UK) Two independant and two GW. No One has ever passed a negative comment about them not technically being GW (and at the last GW tournie the Warhammer world staff were being super strict about models). I expected people to grumble about the Blood Slaughterers being a bit shorter than a Dred, but they have a much larger general silhouette so I guess they balance out.

My friend had more problems with the 2nd edition rhinos and predators (which are tiny compared to the new kits) than I did with my forgeworld models.
