I am picking up some tyranid bits to modify my SM forces to make them look like the true Scythes of The Emperor they are and true tyranid killers.

I need a Relic Scythe for my commander and am wondering what is the best scythe to use. A Scything Claw? Do they have different sizes that I need to watch out for, or will a warrior claw work? Any other scythes out there that could be used?

I am also looking to add plates of tyranid armor to augment shoulder pads or greaves.

This is my first time attempting something like this, so I call upon all your vast modelling skills (I also have no experience with tyranid sprues). Thank you for your help.

i wouldn't use a hormagaunt claw for a relic blade, but for a normal CCW it'd work. if you want to use a talon for the blade the best bet would be the warrior claw, as it is in b/w the guant claw & the 'fex one (with some work it cound make a cool dread CCW :) ). for the talon/blade, you may have to cut down the bottom part of the blade to make it more sword-like, b/c i think if you use straight out of the box, it might look like something out of Final Fantasy (though this might be a look you're going for...), but before you buy anything, see if you can find someone who has 'nid warriors and look at their talons to see if their something you want to use.

my 2 bits of plastic.

I would recommend plasticard unless you want your marines to look like they're wielding plague weapons or infected with Chaos. Tyranid bits look very organic with their chipped carapace and fleshy scything talons.

that's what a cut-down talon might look like.

That's definitely not a talon. That's more likely a scythe from a VC zombie or something similar.
