Well, once again, 3.30am has rolled around and despite my best efforts I have been unable to fall asleep.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me drift off? Preferably something I haven't though of, but you'll have to read my mind to find out what those things are.

Have you tried counting the number of ponies that Psycosplog has posted?

That's a lot of threads, I suppose they probably all appear on that feed on the profile.

I don't know how to play settlers of catan...

:o

The map is made of hexagonal tiles and you build towns on the vertex between three tiles.
Each tile is assigned a number from 2-12.
At the start of each turn roll two dice and the tiles which correspond to the score produce resources.
There are 5 types of resource Sheep, Wood (Timber), Ore, Wheat, Bricks.
http://www.insurgencygaming.com/images/catan/catan5.jpg
You then use the resources to build roads and more towns.
You get points for more towns and the winner is the first person to score so many points.

Part of the turn sequence you can trade resources with players as you negotiate or with the bank on a 3:1 ratio or if you have access to a port it may be more favourable.
You can also trade rsources for development cards which may help you progress by granting you extra points or special rules.

Sounds fun.

Wolfshade

It is, there is a two player variant which is very similiar but slightly quicker to play.
So that is why Wood 4 Sheep is funny, unless you are in Wales in which case it is everyday life...allegedly.

Psychosplodge

It's something I've wanted to have a go at, but the people I know likely to play it are scattered, *Damn you university*

Exercise my friend is my key to a good nights kip :), my wife is frequently miffed at my ability to fall asleep within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. Now I have a pooch again I am out walking in the evenings, only for half an hour or so but it sets me up just right for bed time. Hot milky drink too always helps.

D'oh! I meant Wolfies. In all seriousness, Catan is an excellent game, you should play it. As to the OP, perhaps if you tell us what hasn't worked Soton we could narrow down our advice.

Give up. Read a book, or go work on your minis!

^ This. After training I fall asleep incredibly quickly and sleep like a drugged baby.

Failing that, there are things you can do to ease your mind into falling asleep, dim all the lights half an hour before bed, don't watch TV or use a compute, but read a book instead, this usually helps.

Deadlift and Build have it spot on I reckon. Used to be a bit of an insomniac myself. Exercise is definitely key, that and not eating too late and having a relaxing regime before sleep like book reading etc. Could also be stress related is something on your mind or worrying you? That never helps with your sleeping pattern. :)

So far all of the above have been tried. Well excpet Settlers, but that always gets me far too excited to help with sleep, even when we tried playing to 20 victory points... that was a looooooong game.

I have been suffering from depression for a long while now. I was suffering some serious sleep issues with my last medication, but had been a lot better since I switched. This week though, it has all gone to crup again.

Have you tried joining a gym, strength training does not have to be "extreme" for you to reap the benefits. Exercise with weights is fantastic for depression and relaxation and it doesn't have to be heavy **** either ;)
Pets too. Our furry friends are great with helping with relaxation and I know my dog helps me unwind and chill.
You take care matey and sleep well.

Definitely vouch for this, strength training got me out of my depression/negativity cycle. :)

Exercise is really great for depression, and anxiety too.

Wolfshade

Wildey you are on the list now

Depression really can mess up sleeping cycles :(

Exercise can sometimes help though that is more successful if it is reactionary rather than clinical.

Yeh, I actually got a discounted session rate and free membership at my local gym (who were the winners of the unsung heroes award at sports personality of the year this year) because my GP gave me a referral. Not sure how much it has helped. One of the biggest problems is that I struggle to want to go to the gym anyway (never been a particularly sporty person) and when I am feeling particularly low, it is hard to find the motivation to do enjoyable things like watching tv or playing 40k, let alone jogging up to the gym, doing a workout and jogging back.

On the positive side, I might actually get through the novels waiting to be read on my bookshelf before the next Horus Heresy book comes out...

Funny :)

Not sure if its connected, but my wife's insomnia seems to get worse when I snore the loudest. Unfortunately all her efforts to wake me, which include punching and kicking never seem to disturb me from my slumber.

Does it count as domestic abuse if you don't notice her beating you? :D
