I'm thinking about painting my SM tanks a neutral color so I can switch them between armys. mainly between BA, SW and DA. doing this I could either magnetize the doors with icons on them or just plan jane. what do you think

Depends on what you're into and why you play. I would find this incredibly unsatisfying - which is why I own all the rhinos - but I'm a painter as much as I am a gamer. If you really don't care, though, then go for it.
I mean, look... it will make your army look pretty dumb, in my opinion, but it's your army, and it's probably at least a little better than grey plastic.

Your army, your minis, your money (pennies), your fun. If you enjoy it, why not then? Who care what ever anyone else thinks.

Well, clearly he cares at least a little, or he wouldn't have bothered posting.

Oh I plan on painting them but I can't justify spending over six hundred dollars for things that could be multi use. this is one I seen and liked. thought it would work for all three 3545

I know he cares a little. I should have been more clear. He shouldn't worry about what other people think, why? See below.

This is why you shouldn't care what others think. Why should you have to pay $600 just so you can confrom to a strangers way of how the hobby "should be".
This is your hobby, you play it the way it will have the most fun for you. For some, spending $600 for different Chapters is their fun. For me, spending that much money like the OP is not fun at all.
I say go for a colour scheme that YOU will be SATISFIED that can be played as DA, SW, and BA.

To be frank, anyone who gives you crap for making a money-efficient army that can be used to play multiple codices based on what you feel like playing that day is a spoiled, arrogant, elitist douchebag with more money than common sense. So long as you magnetize and model stuff appropriately so that you can stay WYSIWYG, no one should ever give you any flak.

I've amassed such a colleciton that it can be used for each one, (so aside from having the money to do it...) but I use them all as the same chapter, but will use a list from either BA or SM based on my desire to play a certain type of list. The iconography doesn't really matter to any one here. I would think the same would go if I want to use them as DA or SW provided I had the right codex. WYSIWYG on the weapons/gear is all that's really important.

And especially if you paint everything in your own custom chapter colors, no one that matters will blink twice about you playing BA one day and DA the next, so long as your weapons are WYSIWYG.

This is what I'm going to say as well. Otherwise, I think it's pretty lame.

The thing is, a big part of this hobby is playing with other people and making sure they game if fun for them too, and to a lot of people, building the narrative of the battle is the biggest part of that fun, so having grey tanks in between a red army could spoil that for them, you have to consider your gaming buddies too

To be honest, this is an expensive hobby, one that you choose to participate in; it isn't forced on you. In that sense, you make of it what you will. The reality is not everyone has the money to buy what they want, so if you try to save some money by having a generic paint scheme for a range of units that can be used in multiple codices, I am all for it. Just be aware to inform your opponent each time you want to play with a different codex and all should be swell.

There was a very old WD I read, on the front it had a marine in desert cammo, the credits stated that it was a Blood Angel in desert cammo. Not a splash of red on it.
Of course the easiest was I believe would be to have it as your own founding chapter then change its progenitors as required, sot heyc an be counts-as ultramarines, blood angels, dark angels, space wolves as required.

I'm going to say I actually prefer Space Marine vehicles painted in something other than a big slab of the Chapter's primary; for one, Space Marines are almost all curved armor, and highlighted as such, and the vehicles are . . . flat. They just look off next to each other, to me. As I'm retrofitting my Flesh Tearers, I'm trying to divvy up my supply of Rhinos between the two PA armies I have: Flesh Tearers and Salamanders, and what I've decided is instead all the vehicles are going to be black. It goes with everything, and it leaves room to put interesting iconography on the hulls, like waves of fire on the FW Infernus Predator/doubles as a Baal Predator. In order to help them fit in I'm making up some pennants to be attached, denoting Chapter affiliation.
Basically, if it can't fit in perfectly, it might as well stand out, is my thought.

I really like the Adeptas Mechanica (sic) army from Rob at SpikyBits. He uses them as BA, but you could say they are anything, right? ;)

I think for many people, it will be about the effort you make. If you painted your vehicles black, but had magnetic icons and banners and such, then the vast majority of people will applaud you for your efforts. If you just hit everything with a half-hearted burst of gloss primer, drybrush some metal on the guns, dot the eyes red, and then declare you are using your Space Wolves that day, a few people will probably get cranky at you.
The fact that you mentioned putting in some effort probably means you will put enough in that it is fine.

the armour will have a unique paint scheme that is different from the army. when I said "plain jane" I should have specified better. they will probably be black so they can be used across the board. even being black I can put enough detail and battle damage to make them look good. I added a photo that had a flame job do to them. thinking that would back up the black. even a dark grey would work pretty good to. I'm defiantly not trying to half *** it here either.

If you're going to do it this would be the best sort of idea. The two angels of death chapters could easily have successors with an all black look and with fairly similar iconography. I'd recommend not trying to pass off sanguinary guard as regular jump marines etc.
Wolves I personally have more of an issue with, just because of the canis helix fluff thing and according lack of successors. But they are your private army, if they're well painted I think most people won't be too bothered.
Although personally I think marine chapters are a bit like johnnies. Just pick one and stick with it for the duration.

There was a great army showcase in white dwarf that had Howling Griffons with neutral colored vehicles and liveried doors and details. Worked really well imo, I'll try and find it to get a few pics.

I was issue 309 in the UK, not sure what it would be in the US. Here's a quick picture anyway, neutral colour but matches the griffons nicely. Personally I think black would be the best bet for multiple different chapters.
