Well I started with space marines like most (stupid GW staff) and went necrons got 3k of them so now I'm going chaos as I like the night lords.
Now I'm just curious about other people and how they have gone, some never touching the light of the throne or others going from follower to hater. So post up your 40k race adventures

Played the starter set with a friend as Orks, got owned by the Blood Angels so I started collecting them. I picked up about 1500pts of Eldar from a friend but never really got very far with them, then I picked up a box of Khorne Berzerkers, from what I recall they were teh first multi-part plastic kit for 40k and were very nice. Then I got some grey knights, but as the were all in lead I got around 1500pts before I ran out of money. Then I started an Ork army proper all the while expanding out my BA force to redonculous sizes.

I started with Blood angels and Darkangels, decided I prefered space wolves models and made a codex chapter using them.(a couple of companies worth give or take)
Then decided I wanted some imp guard 'cause catchens looked cool, then they released SoB, got some of those, Then bought a good chunk of tau on release, then had a dabble with WH Chaos, and BFG and mordheim, really wanted to play necromunda but could never get a group together, then started getting some nids...

One day I might paint some of it...

I actually got started by buying one of the 40k video games (Final Liberation, still awesome and they need to make a new version!) and got hooked off the freebie model they put in the box. Yes, I fell for it. My first actual army was Chaos, which I then mostly tossed for Eldar, and then I got driven out of the game at the beginning of 4th by some bad players. Re-started with Chaos in 5th, and then Codex (Salamanders), and then Blood Angels, and then IG, then Nids . . . partly because I've almost never seen a model I hate, but also partly because everybody in my local area is absolutely stuck on their exact same lists, and if I don't shake things up, nobody will.

Blood Angels (After buying space hulk 2nd ed), Chaos undivided, Thousand Sons, Iron Warriors, Eldar, Messed around with Omega Marines/Mentors, Blood Angels (release of new codex), interpersed with half hearted dallyances with guard and nids early on.

So I guess I have come full circle.

Started playing eldar because they seemed really good at killing SM. Moved on to Sisters of Battle because I wanted to play something that nobody else was. Picked up Tau from a friend for giggles. I made a ravenwing army for a paint or die challenge type of thing.

It takes some serious dedication to not play a MEQ army at some point in your GW hobby career. I resisted for a while, but eventually caved in. That is why I think some people never play a MEQ army, as they are so prevalent.

I've always been a Warboss, and always will be. But my secondary army varies from week to week. Marines of various flavours, Dark Eldar, Necrons, Sisters... today it's Necrons. I might build a Land Speeder tomorrow though.

Started with Tau, but I was frustrated with the fact that nothing in their codex works properly anymore. Then I went Blood Angels, but quickly became frustrated because the way I wanted to play them - an all air-dropped assault-heavy army - doesn't really work, either. Then I used some leftover marines to make a codex Marines (Blood Ravens) army, and I was pretty happy with them... until they got stolen out of my car. Because I'd been having so much fun with my shooty marines, I decided to restart them, even though the original appeal of the project had been using all my leftover figures.

In the meantime, I decided to try using the new Allies rules to combine my all jump packs, all the time Blood Angels with a mechanized ground force. I picked Sisters of Battle. So now I play Sisters of Battle, too.

And around the same time, I decided to buy my buddy's Eldar army on a whim, because they basically do everything I liked about the Tau (shooty, mobile, jump and jet pack infantry, unit synergy), only most of their codex still works.

But it's not like I actually plan to stop playing any of my "former" armies. They still get painted, they still sit on the shelf, and sooner or later, they turn around to being my primary army again.

Always Imperium All the time! Codex marines (Doom Eagles because I liked their paint scheme), I dabbled in Imperial Guard with tanks for a while because I <3 tanks, went back to my Doom Eagles till I learned they were depressed Assault marines and all of mine are shooty, took a break for a while because I couldn't find many people to play, Recently picked up with Imperial Guard again after having redone my list and stopped playing Video games to focus on college (I can more easily walk away from working on my models than I can from a Video game allowing me to get strait A's in my classes).

I started with Tyranids when I was little (I saw alien-bug-dinosaurs and decided pretty much immediately that they were what I wanted to play), then in my mid-teens started an Eldar army, then I decided I would like a Tau Empire army, then the new Dark Eldar came out and I jumped on that because although I'd always loved them most of their old models weren't the loveliest things around.

I'm a xenos man. I've recently revisted my Tyranids after playing Eldar for most of 5th edition (pretty much from the point the awful 5th ed codex came out), but with the buffs they gained in 6th ed (aside from the mournful passing of the basic Genestealer terror) I've been loving them, other than one game with Dark Eldar and one with Tau I've played them pretty much non-stop since the 6th ed release with various lists and been having a great time.

I am about to acquire some Ultramarines, but that's purely because someone is selling them for so cheap that I couldn't pass it up, and I figure it's okay to own the classic opponent of the Tyranids. That and I wanted a use for the limited edition Sicarius model I got years ago. :P I don't imagine I'll play them much, maybe just to see what the poor blokes my ravening swarm rush at feel like. ;)

Started back in 1994 with Blood Angels, because I was 10 and Space Marines were cool and the ones on the box were red! Ventured into Orks after a while, so I could play against my brothers and also because I became a massive fan during our Gorkamorka phase, stuck with Orks before I entered my own person Long Night, that dark period in my life where I decided, at 16 that I could either play with miniatures or drink and talk to girls, so I chose the latter.

At about 25 I had had more than enough of galavanting and realised painting models was better than girls anyway, less stressful anyway, and came back to the GW fold, I'd always read the books and kept up with the fluff, but nothing more, then I decided to get a few paints and some Ork Boyz and try my hand at it, turned out I was pretty good, so kept at it, not playing, just painting every now and then, eventually, I bumped into some friends in the local GW, realised they played too and then I fell back totally, finished off my 1500 point Ork army, which is still growing, found a group of painters and really started to improve on my painting, I know have a burgeoning Minotaurs Space Marine force, a small band of Chaos Space Marines, Night Lords, and am converting some IG allies for them , Orks are still my favourites though, can't beat the green blokes.

Your premise is flawed. I have a personal battle of five armies going on here, and also a wife.

Started with Orks 10 or so years ago, moved on to Tau, them dropped off for about seven years. Got back with Chaos, then Dark Eldar, then Grey Knights, and now Tyranids. I've no intention of starting Orks again and am looking to get rid of my Dark Eldar and Grey Knights. Tau are a maybe, depending on the inevitable new codex. I've got Dark Angels as well I should add, which I'll probably expand into a mini Deathwing army.

At the ripe age of about 12 or so, snagged a box of space marines, the one with the crimson fists on the front. Painted them up badly in varying liveries, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Ultramarines. Didn't really do much with them. Received 2ed box set decided to paint all of that up, badly. Didn't do much with it all. Got a Dark Angel tactical marines squad, painted it up fairly well, proceeded to pick up a few bits of Eldar and then promptly hung it up at about age 17... Girls and cars seemed way more important.

2 years ago this month I got lured back into it, bought AoBR, dug out my Eldar, laughed at all the badly painted Marine junk and 2ed Ork stuff. Heavily invested in the Eldar and continue to do so, have also built a big Ork army, Sisters of Battle army, a sizeable Chaos Marine force and a Dark Angel army which come this weekend is going to get a good boosting. I lost track how much money has been haemorrhaged into the hobby, but it is most likely a lot and is not really stopping, slowing down maybe.

Played Space Hulk for years on&off, then got in to CSM (i believe late 4th ed, early 5th), until last spring got bored with them, cos i was losing a lot. Picked up Codexes : Tau, Dark Eldar, Eldar and almost started the DE´s, but in the last reading of them all, i chose the Eldar. Since the army switch and the 6th ed., i´m on a roll in victories! Sweet!

Well, I bought the Rogue Trader book (among others) and some models but never really played (the club I was in played historical). Got second edition and played that with IG all the time with guys from school.

Then I got out because it seemed there was a new edition almost every year or so ;-)

And got back at the start of 5th edition were I played Orks all the time, dabbled a bit in Tau among others but stayed with Orks.

Now in 6th edition I still have my orks but am determined to add a Chaos Marine army to my collection.

Rogue Trader - Orks - Ultramarines-Imperial Guard-Squats
2Ed - Orks- Ultramarines-Imperial Guard-Squats-Chaos (from the base of my Space Crusade Chaos)
3ed - Space Marines - Imperial Guard- Chaos - mostly chaos but a big gap because of Uni.
4Ed - Space Marines - Imperial Guard - Chaos- Daemonhunters (as an Inq army rather than GK) Witchhunters (also an Inq with Arbites rather than SoB army)
5Ed - Space Marines (although rarely) - Imperial Guard - Chaos Marines - Chaos daemons (rarely) Space Wolves ('inherited' some RT models and couldn't resist) Eldar (wanted to paint something different) Dark Angels (thought a white or black army might be easy to paint.
6Ed - so far have used CSM, IG, and a few daemon allies. Everything else in abeyance. Have some 30 bikes in hand for a RW army.
