View Full Version : The bands of yesteryear that deserve more recognition!

Lengthy title is lengthy, but concept is simple.

Over the years so many bands and styles of music have risen to prominence, and sometimes a band breaks at precisely the right time.

Yet for every Pulp, there's an oasis. A band who are nowhere near as good as the media claim, and hardly pioneered a genre but just happened to be right place right time.

But what of those who were the true pioneers, who quite inexplicably never impressed themselves on the public conscious?

For me, and continuing the general Indie theme, it has to be The Wedding Present. You may have heard of them as they aren't exactly hipster obscure, but whether you have or haven't encountered them before, I implore you to check them out. Not quite happy jangly guitar Indie, but solid music. Lyrics and lead singer are kind of cockeresque, but unique enough! Songs? Brass neck, Shatner (very jangly at first, but awesome bass line!) and Getting Nowhere Fast are my fave!

Wishbone Ash, very underrated rock band, I saw them live when I was 16, in a pub, in Honiton. They were brilliant.
On the other end of the spectrum, look out for a band called Rude Tiger, used to be The Morris Brothers. A local band who have been shipped off to the states to do some recording. They are very good.

Either Terrorvision or the Wildhearts I would say.

Love them both!

Terrorvision are one the many good reasons I turned my back on Radio 1. One the big wigs, entirely arbitrarily declared them 'no longer relevant' and banned their music from the station. Quite possibly as he popped on a S Club 7 song.....

No point mentioning non-active bands i guess..

Justin Broadrick's projects always deserve more attention (current active ones are Jesu and JK Flesh), Front Line Assembly should be more popular - and given the release of their Airmech soundtrack (to the game of the same name) hopefully they will be. Always thought hip-hop group Dalek deserved more popularity - truly a gem of a band in a genre that is mostly rubbish imo.

And myself : http://ionplasmaincineration.bandcamp.com/
I know why I'm under the radar though - I lack promotional skills, but the big killer for me is that I'm unable to do live gigs/touring due to health issues.

Non-active bands should be mentioned!!!

Hell, I know Algie. He used to play bass for The Damned, and wrote 'smash it up' latterly covered by The Offspring, and used in one of the poor Batman films.

Nice little earner that!

haha, my non-active bands list would be too long :P I'm a 90's rivethead at heart, even though I don't really relate to the fashion or "club" side of things. But I guess the big ones for rme would be :

Allied vision - took the best parts of FLA, Leaether strip and then pushed them further creating a more intense and complex sound that culminates in the 2003 album "OS Bandwidth", with songs like this :

I think industrial's been lost under the radar cos a lot of it's fans are often hipsters that want it to remain "exclusive" to just "their crowd", another reason I don't relate to many of em' myself. Would love more people to get into this genre and enjoy it like i do.

PJ Harvey (Terrifying.)

Tori Amos (Yes, again, technically she's well known, but still, again, she's brilliant, and I first heard her back in the 90's as well)

I'll chuck one of my favourite bands into the mix and that would be:

Fuzzbox... or to give them their full name: We've got a Fuzzbox and we're gonna use it.

Brian May (of Queen fame) did guest guitar on the above track (which is my favourite of their songs). And Vickie on lead vocals trumps Cerys Matthews of Garbage for most attractive female lead singer any day, in my opinion anyway.

My favorite band that never hit the mainstream is The Bad Examples. Known for playing 300 gigs in 48 states in a year, played 98% original music, and just had a perfect sound/vibe (at least for me.) Ralph, the lead singer/songwriter has at least over 400 songs written that never got played. The band still gets together to play occasionally, but Ralph somehow ended up with Disney doing Ralph's World.

They're hilarious, whats funnier is I first heard of them by clicking a link at the end of Shampoo's "trouble" when having a cheesy nineties youtube session lol

Personally I think Amanda Palmer, or The Dresden Dolls are very underrated, it's mostly an entertaining kind of music even if some of it's quite serious in the underlying themes....also she does an epic cover of Hurt no Johnny Cash, but still good..

Not really as catchy as the other two...

I've just realised earlier I just went underrated rather than old and underrated... oh well
