Ork Shootas

Are Ork Shootas assault weapons? I thought they were rapid fire but at a tourney this weekend an Ork player claimed all Ork weapons were assault. I'd already called him on two other rule fouls, and just did not feel like arguing any more at that point so I did not ask to see his codex. Any clarifications would be appreciated however.

Shoota 18" Range St4 Ap6 Assault 2.

Pretty much all Ork weapons are assault. Shook attack gun + Deff guns are only infantry one that are heavy that i can see in codex. All the other heavy weapons are either vehicle or artillery mounted i think.

Shootas used to be rapid fire... in 3rd edition.

Not so much for the past five years, though.
