Dawn of the Final Day

Something tells me the 21st and 22nd are going to be some of the most annoying days on the internet ever.

Assuming there is a 22nd that is :P

So the Maya themselves are saying the world won't end and that the western world has yet again misunderstood their native cultures. I really rather hoped we were past all that.

Of course there will be a 22nd. My birthday cake has all ready been baked, and it cannot be consumed beforehand!

Wolfshade
12-20-2012, 04:20 PM
Also, it is unclear if the 21st actually would start on sun set of 20th, quite a lot of calendars use sunset as the start/end point of a time.

The Mayan's were really clever, one of the few (possibly 4) civilisations to recognise 0 as a number.

Technically the Mayan Calendar ended like 13 months ago, cos they didn't account for leap years.

As I remember hearing it, the Mayan calendar didn't need to account for leap years due to its accuracy. What really proves the Mayans were munching peyote salad is their notion of this age of man. We live in the 5th age, the age of the maize people - the age of the people made from corn. We are the fifth and final attempt by the gods to create people who are worthy to worship the gods. In each previous age the world was wiped clean of life and the gods started over. This age supposedly started just 5,000 years ago. If you went back in time 5,000 years, I think the ancient Egyptians might be surprised to hear they shouldn't exist.

Archeologists recently have uncovered evidence of a massive environmental catastrophe in Mesoamerica that roughly matches with the Mayan's beginning for the fifth age. They are theorizing that the Mayan's doomsday prediction is actually an account of something that happened long ago, and because the Mayans believed that history was cyclic, they simply assumed it would happen again at the end of the current epoch.

There is also the fact that when the Mayan calendar starts is up for debate. The date that would see the cycle end in 2012 is a mid point in a spectrum of possible dates spanning something like a millennium. It isn't even the most widely accepted start point.

It's all fudgecakingly stupid, never mind the fact that the Mayans didn't think of it as a literal end of the world, but the idea that a relatively primitive society (compared to today) could predict the future is clearly absurd.

I don't know.

I did email Burton's Biscuit Company asking about Jammie Dodgers, they don't count towards your 5 a day regardless how many you eat. Also, they are made with plum jam that is flavoured raspberry.

Psychosplodge
12-21-2012, 03:15 AM
Really? that seems an odd way to do it, why not just use raspberry?

Wolfshade
12-21-2012, 03:19 AM
I would imagine flavouring plum jam is far cheaper

Psychosplodge
12-21-2012, 03:22 AM
Really? I would have thought it would be more expensive it seems more unusual, or do you not really see it cause it doesn't really sell?

Wolfshade
12-21-2012, 03:32 AM
Well plums tend to be cheaper than raspberries at shops, I imagine that is even more pronounced at wholesale. Raspberries are quite difficult to harvest and die back each year, plums grow on trees and they just keep coming year on year not to mention the difficulties inherent with harvesting the fruit.

I also imagine that plum is less popular than raspberry. Afterall, how often do you see plum jam compared with raspberry.

Psychosplodge
12-21-2012, 03:39 AM
Yeah true, I seem to remember raspberries being high priced but I always assumed it was due to their very short shelf life(worked on a produce dept when I was a uni) I suppose if that's how they grow though that will effect it.

What other apocalypses are we expecting?
Does it include the nuclear winter/atomic war option?
What sort of Excess am I looking at?

Wolfshade
12-21-2012, 09:08 AM
Well for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events#Fut ure_predictions

A nuclear winter/atomic war option could be triggered if the casualty rate was high enough.

Well the excess is dependant upon your level of protection and your personal circumstances but for an average person, £350 per claim
