Still not available...
I'm impatient. Is it for Marines? IG? Sisters of Battle? My innards will become my outards with impotent curiosity!

Has this worked? I'm still a bit shaky on Google+

Yeah that works now. It's an alternate version of the lightning fighter. I like it! Brings it much more inline with aesthetic of the other Imperial Guard fliers.

Bah. It's IG. I actively dislike IG. Bring me a Sisters flyer, or more Space Marine flyers, please!
Anyway, you IG players enjoy yourselves...

I hate the engines on many of the 40k fliers, they look great but most are supposed to operate in space and they all have air intakes...

Doesn't look as smooth as the original, which actually looked aerodynamically capable.

It's strange I just can't believe that I'm the first person to find this

While I can't credit GW with this logic for certain, the "air intakes on a space plane" makes some sense- assuming they're ion drives of some form, they're basically a big particle accelerator, using the old "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction" canard to throw particles out the back *really fast* in order to push the ship forward. Once this system gets into an atmosphere, however, there's the problem of air resistance and stronger gravity which require a much heavier throw-weight to get the same result. Now either you can carry the extra mass to be thrown with you, which is inefficient, or you can suck in some of that same air which is giving you the trouble and throw it instead.

We have had a few images of it from conventions and studio open days, but I think that is the first printed info I have seen on it.
I deffinitely prefer it to the old lightning, which I quite dislike (despite wanting one for reasons I don't want to go into). Feels far more like an Imperial Aircraft rather than just generic Sci-fi sudo space plane.

How mysterious Soton, do spill - hang on, you are trading it for sexual favours...?

Very sharp I think, I particularly like the rear of the plane its very different but not crazy retarded.

Having an air intake does mean it cannot operate in space, you just close it off. Not having an air intake however makes it a lot trickier to operate in atmosphere.
Glad to see it will be out shortly, been waiting for this.

I think this will probably be released this friday or next week because it says Winter 2012 Releases

Wy would you need to close the intake, there would be nothing in space that would get into the intake to interfere with the engines.

The rocket fuel burning / expanding would come out of the air intake as well? There is no pressure for the turbine to generate to direct the flow in the space.
That is the reason i can think of :)
Edit.. Still hoping for FW stuff for GK >:I

You people do realize that you're arguing the finer points of aerodynamics of a craft that only exists in a universe where
1) There are 8 foot tall genetically engineered super soldiers who spit acid.
2) There are green aliens who act a lot like soccer hooligans
3) There are people who can make your face explode by twitching their eyebrow a certain way

As an Eldar and Sisters player I agree. Though if this can be taken by Sisters like the Avenger can, then I'm getting one! My ladies need some Lascannon Skyfire desperately. Although my Exorcists seem to have great luck shooting down Flyers.

Wait a minute... what's an Avenger? What book is it in? Where does it say that I can take one? My curiosity, it burns...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SABRE_(rocket_engine) - this design does in fact close itself off at a certain speed. Tis the closest existing comparator, methinks. I always assumed that the void capable fliers had dual functioning engines similar to the sabre proposal
