View Full Version : The 2013 "What I Got for Christmas" Thread

If you're like me, the 12 days of Christmas probably started over this past weekend. With multiple folks to celebrate with, we usually have to take a few weekends to do so, so the the gifts are already flowing in. I'll kick off the thread here to open it up for everyone else to list their fun! Typically we list our wargaming type hauls, but feel free to toss anything cool or notable in there that you've received as well.

Also note: Your wargaming haul, not matter how fantastic, will pale when compared to Eldargal's. Her family celebrates the holidays like they were the last people on earth. While this isn't an ePeen measuring contests, we can all rest assured that her's will most certainly be bigger than ours :D.

I'll Kick it off:

Dooley's 2012 Holiday Haul

1 FW Storm Eagles --> From my very best friend

Asymmetrical Xeno

my best friend got me a couple of anime books and a plush octopuss, some special dirt for Helga (whenever I clean Little miss 8-leg's tank out), and a camcorder from my dad (which I shall be using to film my sci-fi show...if it ever gets made!)

I'm getting the most precious resource of any hobbiest I think - time, time to sculpt, and model and paint. So much hobby time infact that I might just wet myself with excitement!

Obviously not litterally though. :P

So far this hasn't be a huge haul holiday for me. All I've gotten so far is an attack bike from my wife. However, I may be getting more items off my wishlist from other relations in the month to come.

It's not that I'm opening things "early" per say...we just celebrate Christmas on some pre-christmas days with portions of my family. With the Storm Eagle above, we go to my friends house, bring the kids gifts, have dinner, etc.

Jedi Robe thingy (comfywarm!)

Baking stuff (cake tins, rolling pin, bowls and that)

And that's about it.

So far I have recieved... 3 christmas cards? To be fair, with my BDay on the 22nd, we tend to see most of the family over between then and boxing day anyway, so nothing goes through the post. If it's wrapped it'll go under the tree to give me something to open on christmas day whilst eating my pork pie :)

That said, when someone gives me a present before the big day, I usually ask if they'd like me to open it while I am with them or if they mind if I saved it. I know some people like to see the look of excitement on your face... Personnally I prefer the suspence!

FFG X-Wing, all the things.
Lots of FW HH Marines and marine weapons and brass.

Two SW Imperial uniforms, command and line officer with a range of rank insignia
SWTOR Sith Empire uniform (http://www.iplayswtor.com/pictures/picture_48.jpg) with range of rank insignia. All three made by a proper military tailor to get the look right, yay for brothers who don't do things halfhearted.

My in-laws gave me a gift card that magically changed itself into a Stormtalon for my Codex Marines chapter.

And, money I made proctoring exams was magically changed into a new 40K army. I was thinking about diving into fantasy, but decided in the end that I'm going all in with 40K. Nothing against Fantasy, but 40K has a much stronger hold on my imagination at this point, so I'm running with that.

I'm starting a Necron army for 2013. The combination of 'mad money' and holiday sales at the FLGS turned into a Necron Megaforce, a Battleforce, and a few other goodies that add up to a good starter army. Will be starting those once I get the Stormtalon done, and hopefully fielding my 'crons by midsummer 2013.

And, to keep things even, "Santa" brought me and the wife some 2013 Intro Packs for Magic and a few assorted boosters. She's got a nasty white deck that's no doubt going to treat me even more poorly now.

My wife gave up on getting me stuff years ago, so I just go on a spending spree for myself just before Xmas and call it good.

FW MasterClass building book.
Storm Talon
Shafer's Last Chancers
Ork Tank Bustas unit
SM Sternguard unit (metal set not FC)
A Star Wars Droid Gunship to be used as a Tau flyer once I get converting
And a huge bits auction with a ton of like-new tools that I needed to replace anyway.

Also got the Harry Potter complete BluRay set, LEGO Indy Jones 2, and a nice set of Scrabble to round it all out.

I think the Masterclass book is going to be the best gift overall.

I have a forum question: I also received enough money for Xmas/ fantasy football winnings to make a large purchase for myself and I've narrowed it to 3 things: a ipad mini, a nice sized FW purchase, or a handgun. If the latter, it would be my first. Thoughts?

Non-hobby stuff
Chocolate
Money

HOBBY STUFF -Because that's really what everyone wants to know about-
3 Valkyrie
5 packs of Kasrkin Special Weapons
2 packs of Ratlings
1 Squad of Kasrkin
Colonel Ironhand Straken *aka: Colonel Ironhand Badass*

Pretty good haul if i do say so. Considering I'm the only guy in my local group with fliers some one is gonna get a nasty surprise first game I play next ;)

I have a full sized ipad, so the mini would be primarily for reading books. It's probably a bit superfluous. I do think I'd like a Spartan Assault tank....hmmmm.

I got money, mostly. I'm somewhat hard to buy for, as I've already collected enough 40K stuff to keep me busy for years (all I need are the updated books). Right now my passion is art (making, not collecting), specifically ceramics, and in that regard I've already got all that I need. I do not play video games anymore (no time). I don't watch TV (no time).

On the material side, I got:

1) A small, electric R/C helicopter, which my 5 year old daughter stole almost immediately (which is what made the gift even cooler).

2) FFG Star Wars (everything)

3) A book on bootlegging (as in "how to" complete with schematics and technical data) - sadly this is now my second copy of the same book, but I do appreciate the thought.

[edit]
Oh, and I forgot ...

4) A bucket-load of Toblerone.

5) A couple bottles of Drambuie.

Ah, apologies. I wasn't aware the RPG was available, so I guess I don't have everything. I see from their website, though, that the RPG is still just a beta test. So, to clarify, I've got one (or more) of everything from the FFG Star Wars miniatures game. I'm saving my Christmas money for the A-Wing, Millennium Falcon, Tie Interceptor and Slave I expansions when they become available. Well, that and for the Dark Angels stuff when it comes out.

As for playing X-Wing, it is an interesting game, but it is blasted hard to kill anything with a Tie Fighter. The Tie rolls a two dice attack pool (for lack of better terminology) while just about everything rolls three dice for dodge, and even if you do manage to hit, the X-Wing has two points of shielding. The only way I've found to get any hits with a Tie is to close to point blank range and hope like hell your opponent misses, because in the basic games (the ones without pilot upgrades) X-Wings always fire first, and their basic weapon is far more lethal.

A Fantasy Flight RPG? Odds are that it's freaking awkward to play, and you'll loathe it. :p

Awkward? Let me tell you something, I played Shadowrun for YEEEAAAARRRRSSSSSSS!!! ;)

Besides, it is completely, utterly, and physically impossible for them to "F" it up as badly as WotC did, especially "Saga" edition. Honestly, I've never been as tempted to resurrect a long-dead game system as when I tried playing WotC Star Wars. Everyone in my LGS would see us playing and go, "Seriously?!!! Come on! Screw WotC. Play WEG. You won't hate yourself in the morning."

Ahh West End Games d6 Star Wars game, those were the days when you needed buckets of dice to resolve every action and you'd get muscle sprain from all the dice rolling by the end of the game session. Was fun though and their sourcebooks rocked, still got my Dark Empire book for that lurking around somewhere.

Oh gods! That!

Did Shadowrun use the D100 system that Deathwatch, Rogue Trader etc uses?
The system where you need a degree in maths to work out an Assault Cannon hitting Guardsmen?

Nope, they used buckets of six-sided dice. You had to roll a certain number of "successes" to achieve a goal, be it picking a lock, casting a spell or shooting somebody. A success was rolling at or above some target difficulty number. What made it real interesting is that it was not uncommon at all to have target numbers of 8, 9 or 10 for a six-sided die. What that meant is you would roll dice from your dice pool, pull out all the sixes, reroll those and add six to the new number showing, and that sum would become the result of that individual die roll.

A side effect of this was that unless you have a degree in mathematics it becomes completely impossible to determine your chance of success for difficult actions. Even with a math background, you would need to work out the permutations and create a probability chart to track numbers of dice rolled against numbers of successes needed at a given target number. And the reason why you'd want to have some idea on probabilities of success is because your dice pool is limited, and you need to use it for multiple actions in a full game turn.

Apparently the new FFG system is different, Gabe at Penny Arcade gave it a very positive write-up (http://penny-arcade.com/2012/12/24/star-wars-edge-of-the-empire) recently. It uses custom dice to work out things like success and failure, seems like a nifty system from what Mr Gabe says.

Mother of the Gods, why can't it be easy? Like Savage Worlds, or White Wolf?

No one is saying that it isn't easy in the new RPG, just that RP opportunities are basically built into the dice system. Which is a good thing in my opinion.

I politely disagree.

If your character is physically capable of charming the knickers off a Nun, and you're attempting to sweet talk a corner shop owner into letting you off 10p so you can buy some smokes, do you really want to roll for it, or just assume that given your ridiculously high stats in that area it will work?

For me, it's all about the roleplay. The fewer dice I'm rolling, the better the game is going. Another example? My old Vampire character, a year in, was absolutely nuts hard. As such, when roughing up some mortal, it was kind of accepted that there was no way for them to actually hurt me in any meaningful way (Fortitude 6 at that point....) so why bother reaching for the dice?

Really need to crack on with my first game! Should be a lot of fun.

Well that's GMs discretion, nothing about that not working in the new FFG Star Wars ruleset, in fact the results of minor success/failure rolls on the dice are entirely up to the GM.

Me and my group use the White Wolf system for our Deathwatch games because we like to actually ROLEPLAY, we can do that with those rules because we have a success pool, which describes how well you performed an action, but it leaves a certain scope on what you have actually done. That then leaves room to play your role.

For example, I want to inspire a crowd, roll a charisma + performance check, that's about 7 dice for a non-socially retarded Space Marine. I roll 7 successes, but the difficulty value was only 3, so I beat it by 4. Now I have to actually say an inspiring speech.
You have to actually perform the social interactions in WW, which I love to do. Mostly because I'm a Welsh Doctor in huge armour.

Yay I finally got a late present that is hobby related and thus saves me from a hobby-less Xmas. i got:

A Space Marine on bike.

Which is actually pretty cool cos I needed to get one of them and have forgotten to add one into my last few orders. Needed him for a bike mounted Captain so I'll have the option to field my bike squad as a Troops choice now.

The gaming stuff (skyrim and some Infinity stuff) was totally eclipsed by this:

Christmas morning, my little guy came downstairs and almost exploded, he was so excited about the presents under the tree. However, instead of tearing into the presents like a Tasmanian Devil, he found the box *he* decorated with stickers and markers and gave it to me to open. Inside was the gift that he specifically picked out for me--a Batman T-Shirt. He looked up at me and said "Daddy. Superhero!"

So on Christmas, when everyone else was dressed up, I rocked my Batman Tee with pride. Because when your toddler sees you as his superhero, it's time to step up and own that sh!t. Every. Single. Day.

My little dude completely pwnded every other gift given or received that day for me. I'm still humbled and awed.

My mother-in-law added hugely to my Holiday Haul, bringing the total to:
• 1 Attack Bike
• 1 Land Speeder Storm
• 1 Whirlwind Tank

I am very happy with all of these. I'm interested in building a bike army some day. I like the idea of playing with mores couts, so the land speeder adds some interesting options. I am sold on the rumors that whirlwinds will be the anti-aircraft of the new codex, and I'm eager to try painting one.

I'm also curious to test the "whirlwinds suck" hypothesis myself.

And also the big missile rack is pretty awesome looking and will be fun to build and paint.

Good mother in law. Not sure why MiLs have some a bad reputation, my sisters in law say my mother is a great mother in law, once you get used to her bluntness ('Sweetie that makeup makes you look like awh*re', 'I like that dress, it highlights your nice, wide childbearing hips'). Somewhat off topic though...

So, yay presents.
