Just got back from the Hobbit and... welp, that was pretty damn awesome! Anyone else went to the midnight showing?

Got plenty of Hobbit-nostalgia, but there's a lot of LotR-fantasy-epic mixed in, nice blend.

My wife announced to me that she's going to go see it on Saturday. She doesn't care if I come along or not, but there will be no talking. Given that I'm not the chatty one, I gave her one of these:

I really enjoyed the movie a lot, it was a lot of fun and really got the balance of dark to light hearted down pat. Seriously though the next time my friend buys tickets for 3D I will punch him in the face. My eyes are in agony, and had to watch like a half hour of the movie without the bloody glasses all blurry just to get it to tone down a bit. The whole 3D thing needs to die in a fire.

I haven't enjoyed a film so much in ages, and it's the best "blockbuster" movie I've seen in years. It's that good.

I loved it, took the wife for the 1st afternoon showing yesterday. As much as I enjoyed the LOTR movies, this was much more my cup of tea, the Dwarves were brilliant and their characters were perfect. You can keep you airy fairy elves, Dwarves have always been my favourite Tolkien race and this film does them justice.
The Goblins and Orcs were brilliant too, and as for Sylvester McCoy as Radagast. That was a stroke of casting genius. I hated him as Dr Who but in this movie he was great.

Thumbs up from me.

Yeah, we went for the 2D showing for the same reason. Not a big fan of 3D, its ok for some movies but its overdone right now.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm.

I haven't seen it yet, and the reviews I've read have left me extremely... wary. You know that Gandalf quote about how when hope is gone we have to fight on without it? That's me, on this movie. Making the movie even longer by cutting in cr@p from the Silmarillion (don't get me wrong - I love the Silmarillion - but seriously? In The Hobbit?) seems like an epically bad idea.

But I haven't seen it yet, and you all say it's good, so maybe there is still hope?

The only negative comments i've heard so far are from professional reviews. Every normal person, as well TDA say its good.....

I've not seen it yet, but mot of the mediocre reviews I've seen tend to be along hte lines of 'I was expecting it to be more epic like LOTR', which the Hobbit is not. Everyone I know who has seen it has loved it.

I've purchased my tickets on-line, arranged for a substitute teacher for my class, taken the day off, and now I am ready for some Middle-Earth goodness! I think that I've even swing by the GW store on the way to the theater because some chaps are running a LoTR SBG at 1PM there... life is good...

The Silmarillion stuff is handled reasonably, only building upon what was already hinted at in the book (Necromancer/Radagast). The reviews do seem pretty down on it, I'll admit, I think it's a load of fun though!

Basically, it felt a lot like LotR but with the oppressive atmosphere of doom and gloom replaced with a dash of goofy fun.

And dear lord did Gollum's riddles steal the show, Serkis (and the effects team) are amazing.

Why do I get the feeling that these reviewers have probably not read the book, and thus have no understanding of the hobbit in general. The hobbit was supposed to be more light hearted and goofy, it was just how the story was as I remember it, with scatterings of dark story thrown in there for good measure. The movie was fun, the vistas were beautiful, and the characters were fun and I think pretty faithful to the story itself.

My only real complaint (other than the 3D, I plan to get 2D tickets in the future) was much like all of the lord of the rings movies, you here that same melody of music with slight (I say very very slight) variations on the theme all frelling movie. It is a melody I am getting darn well sick of.

In the same way that about 95% of everything is crap, about 95% of critics are morons.

I tend to ignore critics, far too high brow for their own good and look for too much substance instead of just "enjoying" a movie. They get paid to be subjective so feel they have to pick films like this apart. **** em.

Loved it. It strays from the source material a bit but I expect that in movies... good film!

Great movie. Any complaints I have about the departure from the book are small in comparison to how much I actually enjoyed the film.

There is a reason everyone was confused about Jackson splitting the movie into 3 parts and it's precisely because The Hobbit isn't an epic on the scale of LotR. Also, there is a reason that this book was commonly found in the children's section of bookstores for years (at least while I was growing up). To anyone that loves Tolkien, ignore the critics as I'm guessing they couldn't tell the difference between a Hobbit and a Dwarf if there was a chart painted on the wall in front of them.

Yeah I know it's more LOTR but it amused me :p

In the same way that about 95% of everything is crap, about 95% of critics are really, really up themselves.

Fix'd!

It's like when they lay into stuff like Transformers, criticising it for not hitting highs it didn't really aim for. I mean, what did they expect? I expected 80 foot tall robots having a punch up, and that's exactly what I got. With the added bonus of Megan Fox's charms wobbling about in slo-mo. As long as it entertains, why give it a bad review?

Because I wanted the 80's film remade in live action?

Saw it.

Overall impression: I didn't like it, but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. I'll probably see the rest, because a) they'll get better and b) like I said, it wasn't that bad.

I wrote a proper review on my blog (http://burningzeppelinexperience.blogspot.com/). Follow the link if you want to know what I did and didn't like - I've got too many thoughts to just transcribe them all here.

I went to see it again just before I came on holiday with the kids. Every time the wife or one if the nippers starts to get on my nerves, I start humming that dwarves song. Calms me right down ;)
