So there I was last night, watching the telly and smoking a ciggie, my dindins warming my belly.

When, fancy something to read, I went to my geek cabinet to seek suitable material. And having not looked at it for a long old while, I picked up my Marine Codex.

Yeah. Big, BIG mistake. A casual browse, with no conscious intention of starting any army, let alone Astartes soon turns into a machiavellian scheme to field an unusual Marine force (it involves Bikes, Scout Bikes, Vanguard Veterans and Landspeeders, if anyone is remotely interested), including starting to consider the paint scheme I wish to use.

Anyone else had something similar happen to them?

I remember thinking I wouldn't do Tyranids, then looked through the codex, and was sold once again.

I had my Grey Knights codex out looking up the rules to see how my enemy would be hurting me, as they were the new codex on the block back then, and I play Chaos. The pro-Imperium and long time Grey Knights players had said that Grey Knights are uncorruptible, and I could not use them or paint them up in a Chaos Scheme.

I had heard about a few counts as armies, Orks, Thousand Sons and Alpha Legion, and knew they were not for my Chaos. As a challenge I came up with a great ideas for a counts as Grey Knights Codex - Chaos Marine army which I posted a while back. It was a decent list involving lots of Terminators, Dreadknights, and Landraiders. The idea I developed for why my army looked similar and had similar powers to Grey Knights worked well, although some purists still argued that it was too far fetched.

Fabius Bile or one of his clones makes a deal with a down and out Word Bearers Warband who have kept their genes as pure as they could, and were down to less than a company strength. They agreed to provide Fabius with some of their Progenoid glands as long as he produced more through cloning to increase their numbers. He also made a deal with a fallen/dark Sensei providing him a safe haven in the eye of terror, and eventually an army that would bring slaves to him so he could play with them in the arena (when they fall from grace, they get really bad). He agreed and provides some blood which was merged to create a new DNA sequence which it just turned out was very similar to the Grey Knights. Over time the new unit, the "Keepers of the Faith" grew in size.

After they attacked a strange Imperial Cruiser, and destroyed all the Space Marines and crew defending it (none were corrupted though), they stole all their armour, weaponry and vehicles, including a couple of dreadknights. On one of the Dark Mechanicus worlds under their protection, they had it reversed engineered, and a mass amount of the copies made. Fabius also worked out that they used psychically emboldened ammunition, and special grenades, and created similar ones using the blood that the Fallen Sensei provided every month.

Form this they had powers and abilities similar to GKs, weapons and ammunition also similar to them. The decoration and paint scheme however, were truly chaotic. Designed with a mix of old and new in mind. Bisected down the middle half is granite grey with the burning book of Lorgar, the other half is Deep Red with a burning daemon's skull. Weapons and armour have Chaos runes and symbols all over it as well as spikes, skulls and chains. I intend to make it look like they are Chaos incarnate, but with armour and weapons similar to GKs.

I also said the old post, I am happy if others steal or borrow ideas form this project if they want.

Just shows how good GW propaganda is when you can pick up a codex or a BL book read a few pages then think hmm I wonder if I could make a list then you find yourself buying a new army on a whim, although GW accidently gave me a free SM model in my order last week which is very crafty because now I am really concidering buying a small detatchment to go with him, might turn out to be the most expensive free model I have ever had.

I wasn't going to start Sisters of Battle.

I mean, who would? They've got a cr@ppy White Dwarf 'dex. They're pewter and stupidly expensive. But I downloaded the codex - 'cause why not? - and made a list. Because I wanted to know how they played.

And then...

Well, my Blood Angels really need allies to hold objectives and lay down covering fire...

And I really like the idea of the Sisters of Battle...

So, now I play Sisters :-D.

To be fair you can quite feasibly do Thousand Sons as counts-as Grey Knights. Mind you though, I think people should only do that for gaming purposes, unless someone wants to do a 'Kabal of Sorcerers' army as every damn Grey Knight is a psyker lol. You can say their 'special ammunition' is them having extra shots (storm bolters) and that each has a force weapon for obvious reasons. It would be cool, and just make sure you avoid any kind of Inquisitor or Henchmen units. Just use Strike Squads and maybe even Paladins as Rubric Terminators (2 wounds, in the old style). Avoid things like Dreadknights and the like, unless you are willing to convert them and use them as like summoned daemonic entities or whatever. Go massed infantry and you are good. Also obviously take Librarians and not the other HQ choices. The only thing is the lack of witchfire powers in most squads.

Actually, that sounds like a neat idea to me. Maybe in a few years if I am still in the hobby and have nothing else to do. Would be able to put my Grey Knights to use then, because at the moment I probably won't be playing them for a while lol.

Oh god it's gotten worse!

I've actually written up the list, and I'm pretty dashed pleased with it.

And I can see briefly into my future...I'll be visiting the GW site next, to tot up the cost in a basket. Oh lordy lordy!
