Well after some (one sec, let me count)....nine... trips to the purple power/simple green swimming pool I have finally decided on my paint scheme. Here are some pics of my beta squad. I would love feed back so please judge me, brerate me, call me a talentless noob...it will only make me a better painter.

Scheme is as follows-
Cloth
-1:1 Bleached Bone to Astronomican Grey Base on cloth
-Bleached Bone Mid
-Skull White Dry Brush

Body Armour/Weapons
-Mechrite Red Base Coat
-Scab Red Mid
-Very Heavy Badaab Black Wash

PS...The Leman Russ in the background is still very in progress.

PPS Didnt realize these came out so dark, sorry currently at work and lighting is certainly not optimal.

The red is actually ALOT darker in person. Scab Red with a super heavy wash of Badaab Black.

Looks weird to me sorry. The helmet is the same colour as the fatigues where as all the other armour bits are red? Are they wearing gloves or is that flesh? hard to tell and looks very similar to the fatigue colour. I think if you can just make those colours a bit more definable, you should be right.

I do like the flesh tone.

Yah the gloves came out wierd in the pic, the boots and gloves are actually astronomican grey washed with badaab black.

I tried painting the helmets red but then I realized that would make a sniper very happy.

The red boot cuffs kind of make them look like they have flak armoured leg warmers. Apart from that I think it is quite a pretty colour scheme.

I like the scheme but I do think that the helmet needs to be red as well.

This made me lol.

I guess I was trying to balance out the red/white for the entire model (which is why I left the helmet white).
I just finished painting the helmet red on one of my test models and the entire presentation seems "top heavy" too much of one color on top. Like an ice cream sundae drenched in cherry syrup. More Pics to come.

PS. I am wide open for color advice on the leg warmers ^_^

how about making the enitire boot grey? and maybe on helmet the raised sections could be red, make it two tone, or red on grey...something like that may help the feeling of top heavy.

Looking good, a few (hopefully useful) suggestions:
- the helmet could use some more contrast, have you considered painting the side part (extending squares) in a different colour? Maybe even metallic as well?
- to add even more contract you could also paint those small fabric flaps on the trousers in the same grey as the support stuff for the helmet
- I'd imagine that painting the skull on their helmet in the same colour as the red armour would look great as well

Feel free to utterly ignore the above comments, the colourscheme looks great and I can't wait to see more of them!

My monitor at work is going bad. Whites showed up with a yellow tone. My initial thoughts on seeing this were "in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, Ronald McDonald is the only things standing between Cadia and the forces of Chaos."

Now that I'm home and see it as it's supposed to be, I think it looks okay.

The fatigues are too white IMOP. I feel like it should be more brown / gray, or just darker although I do really like the color scheme. Toning down the white would make for a duller contrast and then you wouldn't have to change the "leg warmers". Up to you though, I think your guys are great looking

The only thing i can add to what is above, is use a bit of 'Devlan Mud' wash on those cloth parts, then maybe another highlight with whatever colour they are before the wash.

Ive been thinking about using devlan mud to add some shadows but im a little hesitant for two reasons; one, I really want to avoid turning the cloth totally brown and reason two, for what ever reason (maybe its just a property of Bleached Bone paint) the washes i have used (asuramen blue and badaab black) leech into the paint and spread all over.

I would really like to find some way to add greyish shadows to the cloth to make it "pop".

Oh and thanks for all of the help/comments....except YOU Eldargirl......I keep seeing leg warmers when i look at my squad ;)

Why dont you just be careful about where you put the ink. Only put it in the creases/folds etc?

Looking really good !

Good use of the black wash.

I think I have to agree about the white(ish) helmets matching the cloth it’s distracting, but I think I have a solution.

I like the light fatigues but they look flat, why don't you give them a nice wash of Delvian Mud to pick up the creases, it'll darken them up a little and make them different and more fabric looking than the helmet.

Then take a detail brush, dip it in the black wash and paint a thin line around then details on the helmet to make them pop out a little.

The helmet will look like its white (think about adding a squad number or some other details to the helmets too); the fatigues will look like they have some dimension.

The red armor with black wash looks GREAT. Paint the boots black, (unless they are supposed to be desert troops) then paint them the color of the fatigues (just like real army uniforms). GET RID of the 80's leg warmers and paint them the color of the boots.

And if you like black boots you can always dirty them up and lighten them with "the dust of the field of battle" use some grave yard earth of something and dry brush the heals and toes to make them look worn.

Some ideas for you.

To amend my post, if you’re worried about changing the color of the fatigues, go back over them with a beach bone dry brush just leaving the creases darker. (Which I think has already been mentioned.)

Also for high lighting, I use a mixture of bleach bone and grave yard earth to do the creases on the robes for my Templar, try that, start with straight grave yard earth and then mix in some bleach bone and blend just a little. You can do the same thing for the helmet instead of the black wash. Just take the grave yard earth and darken it a little then paint around the square panels on the helmet to make them stand out.

I found it!!!! The perfect way to get nice sharp greyish/blackish shadows on Bleached Bone or Skullwhite.

First I tried Devlan Mud wash on my test model. It didnt look as brown as i thought it would but it was still quite brown.

So I sat staring at my models/paints for a while trying to formulate something that would work...
So I took some Badaab Black and mixed in a small measure of Astronomican Grey...shook it for a minute and gave it a go on my other test model and voila! A healthy dry brush of Skull White overall and that did the trick!

Great shadows with a natural grey to light black gradient I really hope this helps everyone, took alot of experimentation but it was worth it!
