My first attempt at Imperial Guard heavy weapon bases, crafted as a birthday gift. I'm pleased with the final product.

I like the subtlety in the colors of the weapons themselves, did you mix metallic paints to get that effect?
Also are those premade bases? Or did you do the texture work yourself?
The runis also look very nice. How did you manage to make the wood look so realistic?

The bases and texturing are 100% custom… started out as the plain ‘ol Cadian Heavy Weapons large black discs. Used two different textures of sand, applied in multiple layers with PVA glue, then primed black before drybrushing three shades of grey (with a white final touch-up). I came into 40K from a background of military diorama building, so all my stuff tends to be very muted in color.

The metallics are Boltgun, then Brazen Brass. One of the tricks I use (stumbled upon it accidentally a while ago) is to lightly sand the metallics after they are dry with an extremely fine grit sandpaper. Brings the undercoat through the top coat a bit, and takes some of the ‘sparkle’ out of the metallic paint. Gives it a more worn look. To be honest, I am not 100% satisfied with the remaining ‘sparkle’ on the weapons, but that’s likely just me being obsessive. The camera is awesome, so it picks out detail not visible to the nekkid eye. In-person the models don’t look quite so shiny.

How did I make the wood look so real? Because it’s actually wood. Scale-cut strips of balsa (2x4 framing beams), with the ends mangled for that sheared off look. I actually built a house wall by sandwiching the balsa ‘beams’ between two pieces of plasticard. Then applied a couple different shades of browns and yellows to give it a rotted wood look. If you look close (hard to see in the Photobucket pix, might be easier to see on the blog) there is a small section of wall on the other side of the sandbags as well.

Probably a lot more information than any of you wanted, but there it is.
