Morning all, just wanted everyone's thoughts on whether i should start a Tau army now or wait until their release next year? (where i hear the Crisis suits have been remade)

I have Tau and have had any additions on hold for over 18 months now while waiting for a new codex, a lot of other Tau players I've spoken with have done a similar thing. I'm not sure if GW's policy of zero product news or time lines works for or against them in cases like this.

My Tau came out the box twice in 5th edition. That was it. They're staying on ice till a new codex (same as my Eldar).

Some stuff will not change. Firewarriors for instance. And if you like the current battlesuits get some (but magnetise them in case the weapons all change!)

Or just buy FW. That stuff won't change and their Battlesuits are gorgeous

Id love to do 3 units of 3 Crisis Suits from FW but that's £150 instead of £93 (yes i know i might have money to 'spend' soon :p) for plastics. Although interestingly id rather have the FW Broadsides intead of the plastic/finecast ones (only £5.50 difference).

Personally I would wait, they are supposed to be the next 40K codex after Dark Angels so I imagine they would be released midway through next year.

If you were going to start a Tau army I would think hard about how much you want to play them. If you have projects and armies that are going to keep you busy for at least a year then I wouldn't. If you have nothing better to do till then maybe you want to consider it. Also remember that this is the 2nd or 3rd time there have been rumors for a new Tau codex, so some salt must be taken. Also if you local group allows forgeworld I cannot recommend Tetras enough (they have seriously improved the performance of my Tau).

for the simple posability of the FW suits its worth the extra, and TBH its not that big of an increase in price it only seems as steep since you have earmarked 9 suits. its amazing how a few little tweaks to the kit stops them from looking like mecha rabbits. oh and the weapon systems on the FW suits are really nice, slot in place with easy access for magnets LOL

i am with you on the broadsides though, GW should just recall their pathetic attempt and have a link to FW for their broadsides.

The Daft thing is i have a 1500pt Tau army on the shelf, Commander with 2 Bodyguards, 2x10 Fire Warriors with Pulse Rifles, 6 man Steatlh team, 2x Railheads and 2x Piranhas. Kitted out it's 1500pts and when i used to play with them i enjoyed the fact that my Hammerheads could move 12", enter terrain and fire the Railgun. Reason for thinking about buying new stuff is that i just want to start over with them and i dont like repainting.

Handy thing is my local GW allows FW units, just have to own the book and have it with you.

I am waiting personally, never know what might be redone, even things like the fire warriors or hammerhead might be re-cut with more options even if they don't change.

I've been playing since their first release and over the years I have really grown to enjoy my Tau. I do agree that the Forge World Broadsides look great and Tetra Speeders are awesome if you haven't seen them just google Forgeworld Tau update and the rules for them and additional Tau options and units are available. A lot of people have said to stick with firewarriors and worst case scenario you can always get add on bitz if they do release more options. The crisis suits might be something you consider the most as there have been many rumors about replacing them. I'm unsure what GW has in store and unfortunately you won't know until they offer an advance order or somone leaks a codex. With that said, if you want to join the Greater Good then do it. If a new codex releasese that just means you'll have plenty of time to replace some units and try new suits. I wouldn't let you deter you from gaming. I still have my original stealth suits that get fiedlded from time to time. Well I hope this helps.
