Can each of the 5 crypteks a necron overlord can take for his royal court, pick a different harbinger ability? or Am i only allowed one harbinger ability for all 5?

You can certainly choose 5 different ones if you like.

If by harbinger ability you mean harbinger type, no, you're only allowed one harbinger type per court. You can certainly have more than one type in your army, but no court can have more than one type of harbinger (though multiple crypteks of the same harbinger type are allowed).

Not true. from the Necron FAQ (pg 5):

Q: Can a Royal Court contain Crypteks from different Harbingers? (p90) A: Yes.


The rule from the codex that causes the confusion is really saying that a single cryptek cannot take multiple harbinger upgrades, (i.e. bob the cryptek cannot be both a harbinger of despair and destruction)

*Edit* This is an easy mistake to make, as it is a poorly worded rule.

As already stated in the FAQ the answer is yes. In-fact this little group of different Royal Court Crypteks is referred to as comically " The Super Friends"

Hmm interesting, my interpritation was that you could have crypteks of any type, and crypteks of the same type but you just couldn't duplicate on the equipment i.e you could have two harbingers of despair but they both can't have the same staff upgrade....i will have to double check when i have my codex in front of me.

The staffs are part of the harbinger upgrade, the FAQ clarifies that it is the 2 optional pieces of wargear the harbingers can take are what must be unique.
