So a new company has started up to create modular gaming boards and are currently running a Kickstarter project to get the money they need to mass produce these things. They look like a GREAT deal and can be used for a variety of purposes (not just miniatures gaming) and they're portable. They're like the Realm of Battle board that GW makes but much cheaper and more modular. The best part? It looks like it'll be ~$125 for a 4'x4' board.

What do you guys think? I'm pretty excited to get one to use for Warmachine/Hordes but it looks like they'd be great for literally any game, especially those games which need non-standard sized boards (need a 3'x3' board for Malifaux).

Hmmm, I'm a bit dubious. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the concept, but at the moment it appears to be "pay over the odds for our stuff so we can sell it to others at the normal price later on". If I were looking for an incentive, I'd want something different or unique.
The kickstarter profile also gives no indication about how they are going to go about turning this into a business. Just having a load of stock won't make it a business and I wouldn't want to invest in a company making flat plastic boards to just find out a year later they couldn't sell any except those they gave away to their investors. I'm also not quite sure where you got the price of a 4x4 board from. The only values on their seem to be based on their money raising goals. Even then, for the eqivolent of the GW RoBB you need to spend... almost exactly the same price. For a flat board, with no carry case. I'm really not sure selling gamingboards alone is a viable business. Maybe they would be better off approaching other companies that make gaming accessories to make a single business that covers multiple aspects.
I'm also a little concerened about the detail/quality of the boards. The fact that the video doesn't show clear pictures of the product and instead relies on flashy graphics, repeats of the same few pictures with lens flares and coloured filters, and constantly moving, often blurred images doesn't inspire confidence. I assume these guys aren't professional marketting bods, but if you want me to back something and have gone on and one about it's level of detail, show me it.
As I said, I do like the concept. With the potential to grow the range to include more esoteric boards, along with the hybrid borads so people can mix and match with 1'x1' sections they use in a single board, it would be interesting to see what kind of combinations and deals they come up with, much like battlefoam have done with their carry cases.

Sci-Fi Wars Battle Board. For 40k, Infinity, X-Wing and all your Sci-Fi Battles. These could be an advanced manufactorium, inside a space ship, advance industrial complex, space station, moon base, city complex. Or what ever your imagination can think or style you wish to paint. Whether sci-fi Gothic or else
If we hit stretch goals you will get the hybrid battle boards. So you can have for instance cracked earth & Sci Fi Wars and if we complete all stretch goals so far more themed Boards for each battle board.
Your pledge and support is much appreciated and we hope to get you this battle board to your home . Cannot wait to see pics of your laying on this. Your pledge will make this happen. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...rice-and-great

Whilst we want you to see all the detail, here is an example of what it looks for a small Skirmish game. looks amazing for large scale battle boards too!!
For your 40k, Inifinity, Relic Knights, X-Wing battles. Also can be used for Warmachine pending how you paint it.
This can be an Imperial guard base, or an Imperial complex, Underground Necrotech facility, inside a space ship, Sci-Fi city board. The environment and placing is all in your imagination!
Cheers!

Yeah, I saw this on KS the other day, and I gotta say, I'm not impressed even remotely for the cost. ~100 pounds for a 4x6 table? I'd rather buy a full Realms of Battle set from Forgeworld and save some money. If you dropped the price to about $100 usd for a 4x6 table, it MIGHT be worth it, but even then, I'd rather just buy the Realms of Battle table.
